Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Once again ill just put all my shit in one post:

>X41 with Windows 10 on it
How do i get it back to xp, basically
Ive ordered a recovery disk for XP and i have XP keys, do i have to use the key on the laptop or can i use any XP key i have around?
Is there a specific build ill need for a touchscreen or can i install that stuff after regular XP?
IF all else fails, ill be installing Mint on it, in which case, what DE works best with a touchscreen, and how do i get a touchscreen to work with Mint?

>T42 and R52
I want to get an SSD for both, ive already got two Pentium M 2ghz cpus and 2gb of ram in each, where can i find 40gb+ or 32gb pata IDE SSD's for fairly cheap?

>R30
Hard drive is near death, anything i can do about it to keep it alive for a little while longer? Or is it normal for a 4gb hard drive from the early 2000's to sound like a servo motor on fire?

Thanks /tpg/ for your help with my various issues over the past few months since i first got the T42 at your suggestion.

My x200's fan is running at 4200RPM pretty much all day.
Maybe it's because I always have chrome open.
The computer is also plenty warm, so I'd rather not override the auto fan setting.

Is there any way to throttle my CPU to lessen heat output?
I tried adjusting the CPU governor settings in the bios and it doesn't affect anything.
I'm on debian, btw.

absolutely disgusting.
Just try it, put your index or middle finger on it and use your thumb for the buttons. It might take like 1 or 2 days to get used to but after that you'll be questioning how did you do your computing without one.

Bought a 12.5" ThinkPad Yoga. Set my robot dick e-cigarette on it. Leaked juice all down the keyboard, seeped into the charging port. No longer charges. Stripped the fuck out of a screw trying to open it up. Said fuck it, bought a new (used) 15 incher Yoga because I'm not poor.

I believe the i7 has USB 3(x1). That's it.
Wiki has specifics.
x220 already gets pretty hot, so I personally wouldn't want a sandy vagina i7 in it. The 2520m and the one above would be fine for a laptop in today's day and age.
>>
>>54848067
Yeah I know about the USB 3.0, however I could make the expresscard an USB 3.0 port. I just care about the performance of the two processors because I plan on having it (x220) for a long time. I guess i'm really just debating with myself and I should probably stop being an autist and just buy the 2520m, since I only plan on using it for work / university and I have a desktop for gaming anyway.

Which model should I buy (Thinkpad series) if I want:

>1920x1080 screen
>built-in SSD (or a thinkpad I could easily get a SSD in)
>Trackpoint
>Comfy keyboard
>Can play games on ultra low settings (think cs:go, bannerlord)
>Long battery life (9 cell or more?)

Of course I'll buy it second hand, and my budget is ~700 euros (750 euros is my max).
Is it possible? Does anyone have any suggestions? If it really is a problem, I can up my budget, but I hope you have some suggestions for 750 max.

Any help is much appreciated, I'm not particularly tech-savvy like most of you /g/entoomen, so buying a shitty laptop and changing the screen etc. isn't an option.

>can be upgraded to decent 1080p display (still TN, but it's a good TN)

>has good keyboard (x30 series is where the keyboard started going to shit)

cs:go and bannerlord might be a stretch though. Might have to step up to the T530/540 which are far more expensive and less common for that.

You're correct about Secure Boot. But SMM is a slightly bigger deal than that. You could potentially wipe the firmware from there, permanently brick the machine; permanently (and invisibly) backdoor the machine; even extract TPM keys because of the direct SPI Flash access.

Just bought a P50s, and considering picking up a T430. Got some grand plans for it.

Base T430 with Fingerprint Reader and NVS5400GPU. ~$350. Other specs don't matter.

+ 16GB RAM (+$50)
+ 256GB 850 PRO SSD (+$130)
+ T420 Keyboard/Palmrest (+$50)
+ i7-3820QM / New Thermal Paste (+$250)
+ New 9 Cell Rear / 9 Cell Slice Battery (+$200)
+ 1080p Display once China gets its shit together and fixes the flickering problem (+$200?)

Total I think I'll be looking at ~$1200 ($1k without new screen -- ~$850-$900 if I'm real patient with parts), but I think I'll have one of the highest spec'd laptops possible with one of the highest battery life.

The reason I want the T430 is because out of all the ThinkPad models only the xx10/xx20/xx30 supported the maximum battery capacity of 188Wh, and the T430 (due to size/screen) goes over 20 hours of real life usage. I think with all the upgrades I'll get 8+ hours out of it - more if I throttle down the CPU and disable the GPU. The high end MQ CPU is only +10W TDP but has nearly double the performance and will still outperform anything but the best HQ processors out today.
>>
>>54858366
Oh, and if I decide I don't want to set my thighs on fire I can go with the i7-3632QM and get a 50% performance boost instead of ~100% as well as keep it at 35W TDP.

Usually the seller gives them grades.
The seller I got mine from does Grade 1 to 4, with one being basically new, and 4 being "sed - Showing heavy signs of use, dents, cracks, worn keyboard, palmrest and lid, marks, scratchs, buffs, screen blemishs"

I got a grade two and there's one slight dent near the top of the bezel

Hey guys, i have been experiencing some problems with my T500 while using Windows 7 and 8.1 on it(Pic related W 8.1). Is that what´s called screan tearing? It is very anoying. Only happens when it is overused(more than ~2GB of ram in use). Tough when im running Windows on a VM with any linux as base, i experience 0 screen tearing. Any of you have this problem? Comments?

Well the X220 has a lower resolution display so Jamal's cock will grow at least 4 inches longer while he's anally raping your wife in the bedroom and you shitpost in the bathroom in low resolution glory. Hey /g/, I got my thinkpad recently. I enjoy it but I got some gripes with it. The laptop's screen "ghosts" and leaves something on the screen faintly if left long enough. I solve this with putting a white picture on the screen for a bit. And other things are reall minor, but until I go back to school I don't see why I need to use this laptop when I have my computer.

Alright /tpg/, a couple questions. First, my hinges on my R60 are loose. This doesn't bother me a whole lot, but would like to get it fixed for cheap. Any idea of where to get cheap hinges for it?

2. I have an SSD and 4GB of Ram in my X200t. Is it worth upgrading to 8 GB, since it is more of a backup laptop for when I need a windows computer?

3. Should I upgrade anything else while at it? my R60 has a 2 ghz processor coming in, 4 GB ram, and an SSD in it. X200t has SSD, 2GB ram, and a 1.86 GHZ processor.
>>
>>54844655
Fuck... i just ordered a X220 cuz i'm not happy with my T430 keyboard...
>>
>>54864035
You can look up the battery's health, at least on GNU/Linux. Think it is possible through Windows too. That should tell you if the battery is knackered
>>
>>54864370
>He has to use the terminal to fuck with his backlight and volume.

Are you purposely cucking yourself, or are you just an idiot?
>>
>>54864750
1. ebay
2. Use it how you normally would. Does the RAM seem to be a limitation? Do you run out of RAM? If yes, upgrade
3. Does your R60 do what it needs to? As above, does anything seem to be limiting it? If so, under what circumstances, and would any proposed upgrades help?

I guess what I'm driving at is that nobody can tell you if your specs are enough. I am using a really low power machine right now, but it does what I need it to do and so replacing it would be stupid (further upgrades are not possible). try using your machines and see how you go. Not much point trying to work out what could be better without real world data.
>>
>>54864752
>Not swapping the keyboard to the T420

lol
>>
>>54864831
I feel a little limited on my R60 (daily for stupid shit). My x200 is solely a windows backup machine that I use on travel and whatnot when space is limited, so I have almost never reached it's maximum potential so far. Was just wondering if now would be a good time to upgrade or not. thanks man.
>>
>>54853554
that's why you wait until you get it to order not super important stuff like that.
If it's a charger then yeah order one at the same time, but if it's a stylus (borderline useless part) don't even bother ordering one
also I hope that you didn't get one with the ulv cpu. I made that mistake and sold it almost instantly since even web browsing was unusable.
>>
>>54864750
8GB DDR3 is cheap as hell these days, unless you're maximum poorfag there's little reason to not max it out. Just remember you need to get 2x4GB sticks, it won't work with 1x8.

I think the R60 is laid out identically to the T60 on the inside, which means it's a possible shell for a T601F (R601F in this case?). That would be a solid upgrade to its usability if you're willing to hunt for the needed parts.
>>
How long does it normally take to ship a thinkpad from lenovo's website with normal shipping?

Originally lenovo's tracking page told me it would take 2 weeks, then all of a sudden a day later it said it would only take 1 week.

Now I have a UPS tracking number now, and the package is being processed in HK. But with customs and international shipping, is it really just a week?
>>
>>54864878
Sounds to me that you can leave the x200 alone for now at least

As for the R60, do you know if you are RAM or CPU limited? If the former, easy upgrade. If the latter perhaps an upgrade is in order. I dont know if the processor can be upgraded (not an expert in any way at all) but if not you could always sell the R60 and put it towards a higher-specced machine. If you can live with the current performance I would advise to just stick with it for now, consider cleaning up/otherwise streamlining the OS or alternative software if one replaceable program seems to be a bastard to you
>>
>>54864979
I have the RAM maxed out on my R60 (only 4GB max), but I like it's square screen and old school styling. Like I said, new processor is on its way to me, should be a solid upgrade from 1.66 Ghz to 2 Ghz. Already checked too, compatibility is good. Hopefully I can get a few more years out of my R60.
>>
>>54864839
Well it's a shitty idea since bios upgrade will never be available...
I'd rather have two dankpads, one smaller and more convinient.
>>
>>54865036
Very sorry, overlooked where you said you were getting the new processor. You're on linux, right? What distro are you using? I'm using a netbook with an atom and 2GB RAM and for day to day word processing/internet/light coding etc it is a very usable machine. That being said I noticed a very big difference shifting between DEs - best I have found is i3 on a minimal debian install

If you have the time, I would probably try something more lightweight. If I remember, I used Mint XFCE and it was OK but I saw a definite speedup with debian/i3. If you don't already, consider a separate /home partition to make distro-hopping a bit easier

True, but it was an i5-3320m, and most other listings on ebay inflated that way more than it should've been. And besides, even though it came with 4 gb ram and 500 gb HDD, I can always upgrade them later. Not a normal thinkpad guy here but, I've been looking at them all day and I'm pretty sure you can easily find a thinkpad with >2.0Ghz i5, more than 6GB of RAM, etc

Some even have video cards, but I don't know which ones. The only area you're really losing out on is you'll have an older CPU but, functionally you won't even notice the difference with some of them.

Go to ebay, type in Thinkpad T420, or X220, and then any stuff you feel you want. Like my searches all have 8GB 1600x900 in them because I hate 1366x768
>>
>>54874208
Grow up. That's the solution. It depends on what kind of 'gayming' you're doing. Why does no one in these threads ever mention what they're going to do?

For example, the only games I play are Don't Starve and Team Fortess 2. Both of which ran well enough on the Surface Pro 3, a damn tablet.

Every game I love can run just fine on integrated graphics. What about you? Are you trying to play AAA games from 2016 on it? Then you'll have to buy a new Thinkpad most likely, which sort of defeats the purpose of why people in these threads get so hard for them.
>>
>>54874208

depends on the games

my E545 can run CS:S with all the eye candy on at max res at 120fps with AMD A10 APU.

So guise,

I just purchased a fucking dockingstation without knowing if it is possible what I want.

I am using ubuntu 16.04.
Is it possible to configure it that way that if it is docked that only dvi is used as main monitor?

I want to throw my desktop pc into le trash and just go full thinkpad with docking station and 24" monitor

im wondering how well it runs, im sure it runs like shit, a 1.5ghz pentium m and 1.5gb of ram cannot handle that under any circumstances
windows xp though, that should be gold on it
linux mint can also idle with 75mb of ram on windowmaker, which i might go for, just depends how good the touchscreen is on linux

either way, the xp recovery disk doesnt show up for 2 more days and the linux mint usb hasnt shipped yet, so im gonna be stuck with windows 10 on it for a while

what would you lot think about an ultrabay unit that was just a little drawer you could slide open and shut, and put things in?

what about one that had a bunch of universal adapaters inside, SD, microSD, usb, those mini HDD's, lightning port, etc

one that slid out and had a cupholder?
wallet?
tiny retractable lamp?
numberpad?
gun?

It's definitely possible to do it manually. It's probably possible to do automatically. xrandr is what you will use to switch monitor set ups.

Usually docking causes an acpi event. I'm not sure if it is one of the events systemd can pick up or not but if it's not acpid or some program can. What you want to do is call xrandr every time a docking even occurs.

Don't throw your desktop away. Run it as a headless server or something so you can use it as NAS and a compile machine and other shit you don't want to tie up your main machine's cpu with.

And the back of the X41 was covered in glue, which melted with the plastic in the summer heat, and it got into the air intakes and ram slot.

Did i mention that this laptop is also dirty as fuck? It looks like someone shook it up in a bag of crushed up doritoes. Honestly, its a mess of dust and shit. Im bringing it to work tomorrow to use the air guns to clean it out.
