Most Rolexes are nothing technically amazing, but are extremely well made and will last a lifetime or more if correctly serviced, which is why they appeal to a lot of people in a world where most products are poorly made, cheaply produced garbage.

I don't think so.

The chrome or titanium-nitrate plating will look weird with the steel mesh.

Amphibia's have polished steel cases, plus you can handwind them despite them being automatics. Thickness wise they are very close.

I have one of these, Grade 1 (highest) Chinese Standard Movement watch from the 70's. What strap should I put on it? I have the factory metal bracelet but that's worse than an Amphibias. I wore it on an admiralty-gray nato today, but I think it deserves a leather. I'm thinking black, either glossy lizard, or satin croc. I don't think brown works with this dial at all.

Also how do I re-chrome at home? Mine is a bit more beat than pic.

I've heard of people soldering some kind of filler, like hard silver and then plating it. I've soldered hard silver once in the past and it was a bit annoying to work with. (Much more used to soldering tin or Gold)

But at this point you're almost better off sending it to a company/watchmaker that does it.

Well i ain't.

I've soldered electronics and welded lots of copper pipes in the past, so i'm not an expert in filling and plating.

Either way if you're going for a semi-homemade solution you'd have to smooth it down and likely go for something like nickel plating. Since the chrome plating process is toxic.

IMHO:
AL&S and PP are at the top
AP, VC, JLC and Breguet are at second place
IWC, Ulysse Nardin, Zenith, GP, Blancpain and others are 3rd
Rolex, Omega, Glashutte Original and bunch ohers are 4th
Oris, Longines, Corum are 5th
etc.....

Yes, of course it's worth it, even if that adds a different color to the movement.

That sounds about right. Maybe some little misplacing, but I do concur that AL&S and PP are top notch.

However, I do think Lange is somewhat better, since they'll put the exact amount of effort in finishing their entry models in a manner as good as their big complicatiions, while PP may not really, really, invest the same amount of effort.

Still, both are unchallenged among non-independent manufactures.

Well, that's the Spring drive. It ain't cheap for a reason.

Silent, 72hours PR, highly accurate, and has a fully smooth seconds hand.

I don't quite follow as to what you're refering as "fork".

If it's the magic level system then yes, even the cheapest Seiko 5 has that bi-directional winding system.

Seconds hand beats at 21600 BPH (beats per hour)

Anyhow the seconds hand at 21600BPH isn't full smooth but it's getting close to it. The higher the beatrate the more smooth it appears.

>The reason we say that such coloration is mainly decorative, especially the color red, is because many colors fade as you dive under the water and light wave frequencies stop at various levels of depth. The aBlogtoWatch team - which includes a few divers - notes that the color red disappears at about 20 feet, thus rendering it all but invisible unless you have a light with you.

I mean there is a certain amount of "People will pay it so we will make it more expensive" in most luxury pieces, that's kind of the definition of a luxury good.

A concept that can be translated further to cars.

A 500$ Subaru lunchbox car will work for what's it worth, a 500$ car. It'll get you from point A to point B, not exactly fast nor will it be comfy.

When we approach the prices of something like brand new Toyota corolla you get a highly reliable car with some comfort, decent motor power, and all the bells and whistles.

Now when you get to the point of 80K USD Mercedes's you get to of the line comfort and luxury, lot's of engine power but they will need constant servicing to jew people out of more money. Money these people have, but regular people don't. (A.E Co-axial escapement servicing)

Up to the point of diminishing returns, watches and cars, are worthwhile. Afterwards the concept of luxury kicks in.

Toyota Corollas are sort of penalty boxes. Buying a new Corolla over a $500 Subaru is sort of like buying a new Seiko 5 over a poo2loo special for $1.

Camry/Accord is sort of your 6R15/2824 grade.

Good to know.

Got a bit too used to my dad praising the Corolla. We don't have any of the newer Accord (Post 2009) models around and with the Camry models being non-existent here i was kinda biased.
