Is there a significant difference between high quality PSUs and low quality ones that aren't complete garbage?

You could check the homescreen thread on /wg/.

You just need a bg scroll animation on the group of icons, and the center screen has to be the screen it has to be on. That's atleast how I did it.

I think I have all the parts finalized, but I'm still deciding between the 390 and the 970.

software side will be very minimal, probably little more a demuxer and some glue to pass the streams on to hardware video/audio decoders

BD's do also have a java vm requirement, as that's what their menus use, dvd menus are much more basic, they're just still image or video with 'hotspots', kind of html maps (or youtube annotations)

Create e.g. a button in kwlp. Then you should go to the "Animation" properties of it, add a bg scroll animation, with the center set on e.g. screen 1, if you want it to appear on homescreen 1. You'll basically be swiping through homescreens with your clock on the same location. You might have to mess around with the speed property as well

I got a problem.

My brother has a USB headset that works on his Windows 8 machine, but he got a new headphone today that plugs into the 3.5mm audio ports and now the Windows is complaining that the sound is disabled.

I believe I knew the issue. That Windows disabled the sound because it the USB headset isn't plugged in, but I went to the sound settings and set the motherboard's Dell Conexant audio as the default and the headset is showing up as plugged-in in the Dell Audio program, but windows is still saying sound is disabled and don't know what to do now.

Any ideas?

How do I read this chart?
I understand that I can use the SATA3_0-4 connectors no matter what I put in the M.2 and can't use SATA3_5 if I have a SATA SSD in the M.2.

What I don't understand are the SATA Express and PCI connectors.
What does "No devices installed" mean in this context?
The third line seems to be telling me that if I use a M.2 SATA SSD, I can use every connector except SATA3_5.
But then the three other M.2 SATA lines presumably only tell me that PCI and SATA Express devices are optional.
My problem with that is that it is redundant and inconsistent, (they don't bother putting NA at SATA3_0-4)

As I understand it: If I use a PCIe x4 SSD, I cannot use the SATA Express connector, but what about the PCI?

Dear /sqt/.

How does your favorite functional language handle database access?
How does it compare to superb default ORM frameworks like Javas JPA/Hibernate and C# Entity Framework?
How does your favorite functional language handle service calls and passing service call interfaces/clients to other users?
How does it handle unit tests and mocking of service calls?
How does it handle dependency management?

It probably can't do all that, which is why OOP is used for most applications.

How do I determine a good CPU? It doesn't seem like there's a simple linear scale based on something simple like GHz, it seems like there are CPUs that have lower GHz but are more powerful than others because of things like architecture. I just don't understand how you're supposed to figure out what's better than what and how to decide.

Also does AMD even matter for CPUs right now? It seems like everything is i3 or i5 or i7. I never see anything mentioned about AMD.
>>
>>54428814

>I never see anything mentioned about AMD.

Probably because various tests and benchmark sites suggest that while AMD CPUs have similar multi-thread performance to Intel ones, they have really low single-thread performance compared to them. And a lot of software most people use is usually single-thread.

Passmark multi-core results

intel i3s: up to ~6,100
AMD A10 APUs/x4 athlons: up to ~6,100

intel i5s: up to ~8,100
AMD FXs: up to ~10,300

Most games today use more than 1 cpu thread so going with AMD doesn't make too much of a difference especially in DX12 games. And unless you encode video 24/7 power consumption isn't something you should worry about.

Going above an i5/FX processor is completely pointless unless you're running a server or encoding 4K HEVC video. That being said FX processors are pretty old and you should wait for AMD Zen processors if you want more juice than an i3.

Finally AMD processors are always cheaper and offer the same multi-core performance. For example the AMD 860k is ~$80 and the intel i3 4370 is ~$160. Both offer pretty much the same 5,600 multi-core passmark. With the 860k being able to overclock whereas the i3 can't.

No one has tried, as it's a bad idea. LTO tape might survive decades in storage, but it fastly degrades when read or written.

Yes, just use a beginner distro so you can learn bash a lot better and you'll get a better understanding of GNU/Linux in general. Also I think this question was more meant for the "friendly GNU/Linux thread". But to add on, if it's on a VM it really doesn't matter too much but in general it's good to know basic GNU/Linux functions and the way things work out. I'd start out by using Ubuntu with unity, then using another distro such as Mint with xfce, or move onto another DE. You just want to get a feel for the DE's and find which one is the most comfy for you. You can always install a dual boot of a distro you like to get a full experience that's faster and not well, on VM tier hardware.

>Is there a significant difference between high quality PSUs and low quality ones that aren't complete garbage?

Efficiency and materials. You want leaky shit that also overheats and has a tendency to blow inside of a year, get a CX. You want a really crappy PSU, get a diablotek, now those are shit PSUs.

There's also ease-of-use. A non-modular PSU is a bitch and a half to manage while a modular PSU is so easy a monkey could use it.

Do not skimp on the PSU, ever.

Ahh, just looked it (xfce and unity) up, its the DE, right?
Thanks again
>>
>>54430353
Yes, unity is the default DE for ubuntu but is usually shunned upon for being less customisable and more resource intensive, some people don't like the design either (on modern hardware you should be good anyways). Xfce focuses on being lightweight and customisable but may not look good to you, there's many things in a DE that makes it how you like it. So at the end of the day it's all purely preference whether you like X DE or not. Just experiment with different distros and DE's and you'll find one that's comfy for you.

This is a simple question. Do I need a GPU if I plan to use more than one monitor for work related purposes, not gaming? You'd be surprised how hard it is to find a straight answer on google, some places even say you need multiple GPUs for that.
>>
>>54430462
It depends on the resolution, but generally you want a somewhat decent GPU in general just for having more pixels displayed and for everything being quick/smoother/faster.
>>
>>54430462
Depends on your motherboard, but if you have to ask, then the answer is probably yes, you do need a GPU for dual monitor or more setups.

I literally selected to upload the folder, yet, my upload appears to be skipping over some files. Are they incompatible with mega.nz? If so, which are they?
>>
>>54430485
>>54430488
Thanks. This isn't for me, this is for a friend's mother who needs multiple monitors for work reasons. I assume a 750Ti would be the perfect GPU. Also, both of those monitors use VGA, and the 750 Ti comes with a VGA converter. Do I also need to buy an HDMI to VGA converter, or do I split it off the VGA, or what?
>>
>>54430543
Are both monitors VGA? If so, you should just get one with 2xVGA output.
>>

The server hides the information of what files are in that directory.

depends on what you want to use the server for. The best OS is one that you don't have to reinstall after a while, so any Linux distro with a short release cycle (like the non-LTS *buntus or Fedora) is not good.
Centos or Debian stable are usually what people use for servers that run for years without rebooting.

HTML can't do this directly, you'd need to use some kind of scripting. JavaScript can do this I believe (not 100%), or PHP (or some other server-side language).

In your case, JavaScript will likely work better as it's client side, PHP requires a webserver to run (so works if you're running local apache/IIS, but may be overkill if you're making just a browser landing page).

With that said, I'm not much of a JavaScript guy, but a quick Google seems to confirm that it is indeed possible.

If there's a way to do this without reading from a local file, that's probably better though - what are you trying to do?

To what extent should I optimize my SSD for the OS/programs I put on it, if at all? That is to say, doing all of the various tweaks to limit the amount of write cycles (disabling/relocating paging files, temp folders, etc.) I've heard some people say it's not really necessary with modern SSDs, and others say it's a good practice to have nonetheless. Furthermore, is it still recommended to keep them at ~75% capacity? I've read some sources that say there's a hidden partition on most SSDs now for precisely that purpose.
>>
>>54433606
All you should care about is overprovisioning and TRIM. Everything else is a waste of time and effort with very little in return. SSDs can deal with 10GB/day for 20 years or 20GB/day for 10 years. Take it easy alright?

I thought it was about time to upgrade. It's been a little over 4, reaching 5 years now.

Also I got this weird issue where randomly my Windows flicks it's screen for a second, then I notice things like my appearance settings for my desktop starts acting weird, this goes on for at least 4-6 minutes before it suddenly goes back to normal.

And a lot of games that are made for Nvidia crash on me if I go anywhere higher than medium settings, I feel like the first problem might've been a driver or possible a graphic card issue. So I was debating was seems like a more appropriate choice to upgrade first.

Seems like a problem with either the monitor or the graphics cad. Most likely the latter. It's not really a good time to upgrade it though. A 380X/390 would be fine were it not so power-hungry. The 400 series will fix this. Nvidia cards are pretty shitty at the moment.

You can probably get an i5-6600k/Asus Z170A/HyperX DDR4 RAM for ~450 leaving ~350 for a graphics card i.e. 390.

Don't you have another GPU you can test? Maybe borrow from a friend?
