However this attempt will prove more dynamically challenging than the April landing. That mission carried a Dragon spacecraft, which was destined for the International Space Station about 400km above Earth. Tonight the Falcon 9 rocket must deliver the Japanese satellite into orbit 36,000km above the planet's surface.

>As a result, early on Friday morning, the first stage will accelerate to a greater velocity, moving almost parallel to the surface and away from the launch site; it will then release the second stage and the primary payload. This trajectory will leave the vehicle with far less fuel to arrest its horizontal motion and control its descent to the barge waiting below. "JCSat is pushing the envelope as a very hot and fast mission," Elon Musk tweeted a week ago.

>The company has said there is a relatively low probability of success for a landing. But at least weather conditions look favorable, with a 90 percent chance of go conditions tonight. You can watch live as SpaceX will begin a webcast at around 1am ET, some 20 minutes before the launch window opens

This rocket is supposed to send a sattelite into geosynch orbit with Japan, right?

Not on every mission they have enough fuel to get back to the Cape, so in those (especially missions to GTO/GEO like this one because they need much more speed than for LEO missions), they need to land it on the drone ship.
>>
>>54403732
>>54403755
They would have to use too much fuel to turn around to land on land, or the oil rig would have to be in a very specific zone in order for it to be cheaper to buy instead of getting the barge there. Then there's the little issue of getting the rocket down from the rig.
>>
>>54403782
Why don't they just keep going and land it on the moon or mars and have it wait there for future missions?
Man, NASA is just a bunch of idiots these days.

When the rocket uses enough fuel for the second stage to get to GTO, it doesn't have enough fuel left to go back to land.

They have to fire the rocket out over the ocean because otherwise there's a risk of the rocket falling down somewhere that has people. Over the ocean, literally everything can go wrong and the worst injuries possible to humans are to their feelings.

They can't land on an oil rig because:
A) There isn't an oil rig already there.
B) Turning an oil rig into platform capable of having a rocket land on it is likely much more expensive and harder to maintain than just sending out a boat.
C) They can send the boat anywhere in the ocean that the rocket will land, instead of forcing all the rockets to go to that one location
D) When the rocket lands on the boat, they can pull the boat back to land. If it landed on a solid platform in the ocean, they'd either have to launch it from there or put it on a boat anyway to bring it back to the main land.
>>
Oh, Elon, please never change!
>>
>>54403712
Years ago, I remember watching some old black and white sci-fi movie (I think it was called Rocket XM). The rocket piloted by American astronauts had to fly to some distant planet. The rocketship landed in the same way Rocket X lands.

I remember thinking how silly it was landing a ship with that shape in the manner that they did. And it is incredible to now watch SpaceX land their ships in that manner.
>>
>>54403801
Because they would need a lot more fuel for that, and a bigger rocket to carry the fuel. There are plans for a rocket that big though.
