Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Hey, I just messed up my void Linux yesterday by adding startx in .bashrc and doing
 usermod [user] -s /bin/bash

Now it's impossible to log in to my normal user. Root is still possible (both share the same password)
I already undid the changes, greped for config files containing "startx" and changed the user passwd without any success...
Any ideas?

I'm having some problems with Xubuntu 16.04 on my X220 and I was thinking about switching to either Debian Testing, Fedora, or OpenSuse. I'm not sure how up-to-date Debian Testing's repositories are compared to Ubuntu 16.04. Mostly when I see people discussing Debian, they're talking about its great stability, so I don't if it's even worth using it unless I go for the stable version. Any thoughts?

Debian unstable and testing are not as stable as Debian stable obviously but they are definitely usable once you get the hang of them. Debian testing is usually between 2 and 4 weeks behind unstable and similar to arch.
Debian testing is probably about as stable as non-lts buntu if you don't fuck up yourself.
You should be able to read and use a search engine in order to use anything other than buntu.

I didn't say it was perfect ;) interesting thing to point out, I didn't notice that.

Surprisingly, this isn't the only strange thing on that website. You'd think the distro that wants to be more fun than Gentoo would be run by elite wizards, but have a look at what they recommend for browsers:

Can anyone explain the difference of Funtoo and Gentoo and if it really is the ultimative wizard distro? The funtoo website says, funtoo is based on gentoo, but on other sources I read funtoo is it's own project and gentoo gets stuff from funtoo upstream. I'm a bit confused. Also why didn't the developer stick to gentoo? Why a new distro?

>>54258800
Gentoo uses Rsync to update portage which is slow as fuck. Funtoo uses git, Funtoo is basically Gentoo with an improved emerge system (but less support afaik)

It's not really a wizard distro, its as easy as any other it just takes longer cause everything is compiled. You can get the same deal using Arch abs or Debian/Ubuntu apt-get source.

There is a 1% speed increase on 32bit systems, though I think it's less with 64 bit.

>>54259101
What the faggot is referring to is Debian stable, when you upgrade to use Debian, use Debian unstable or Debian testing. Don't misunderstand the terms "stable, unstable, testing" in "my system is save, my systems breaks". Stable or LTS just means that a distro doesn't get new packages for a while (except security updates). Good for servers or astronauts, but desktop users use unstable or testing, the equivalent to Ubuntus dot releases. A "my system may break" state is when you are on the bleeding edge of rolling releases, but when you use such distros, you usually already know how not to break it.

I now have a pretty crappy PC that can still provide me with the ability to do this VGA passthrough thing, or at least I do think so. Mobo has an hdmi output, I'm using an i5 4460 which has an hd 4600 (that I guess would have some trouble with Gnome 3 or KDE but nothing else), a 280x and 8gb of RAM (I guess if it works I would upgrade to 16)

This is my first Linux so I decided to try out Gnome. I was happy with it, but sometimes it started to lag for for whatever reason even at 0% CPU and RAM usage.

So I've just switched to KDE, and it's pure crap. I tried to set some hotkeys, but I can't even bind anything for just the meta key. I managed to place the task bar on top of the screen, I just had to restart my PC 2 times during the process, and I'm still not content with it.

You can improve boottime a lot by removing modules you don't need and making the kernel smaller.
You can improve performance or battery life by using a fork that has another scheduler or other policies.
The only downside is it takes some time.
My advice would be to compile it with your current kernel options while you figure out what you want to change as it takes less time the second time to build

“LAMP” stands for “Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP”—a common combination of software to use on a web server, except that “Linux” in this context really refers to the GNU/Linux system. So instead of “LAMP” it should be “GLAMP”: “GNU, Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP.”

Can i have an idiot question how to boot Chromium OS from live USB on non EFI laptop?

The machine is currently dual boot running Win 10 and Ubuntu 16,04.

The only way BIOS let booting anything from USB is when you turn on support for Legacy USB but since the Chromium images are always flashed with GPT partitioning it obviously fails.

There has to be a way to load OS from the GRUB menu or maybe some other trick. Any help?

I tried both .bin and .img images by ArnoldTheBat and hexxeh, in win and linux, by terminal, applications and Google own recovery tool. There has to be something i am missing.

Semi-related but every Linux distro I tried would refuse to shutdown, reboot, suspend, etc. It would just hang. I had to go into the BIOS and disable a USB3 external controller or something along those lines.

The general workflow is something like apt-get source somepackage && cd somepackage-* && dh build
dh is from the debhelper package, but seriously there are tons of guides on blogs and shit. Search for it, IIRC debian women had a good guide up from one of their workshops.
Also ls might be a bad example because that is from the coreutils source which pulls down gnulib too.

A few days ago I calculated there are 2504600 lines of man pages on my computer in English. Taking a page is about 41 lines (this was the number of lines in the closest book to me at the time) that is about 61,000 pages. And if an average book is 300 pages, that's about 203 books.

i attempted to upgrade my kernel via pacman -Syu, and now my shit's basically fucking fucked. the version of linux i supposedly upgraded to is 4.4.5-1, which is the version that shows in my installed packages database. this upgrade is shown as successful in pacman.log:
upgraded linux (4.2.5-1 -> 4.4.5-1)

however, if i
uname -r
i get
4.2.5-1-ARCH

my shit's all fucked because nothing fucking works. if i try startx, i get a bunch of messages about modprobe trying to look for modules in the old directory (/lib/modules/4.2.5-1-ARCH), which doesn't exist anymore.
i have rebooted.

Greetings /g/entoomen

I am looking for a very specific kind of encryption software package.

------
The package should recognise two passcodes:

1. Correct passcode: If given, the file folder is decrypted properly

2. A specific incorrect passcode: If given, the file folder will be re-written with random values
-----

Is there any encryption software that has this feature or should I write my own?

If I have to, where should I start?
I only know a little bit of python and bash
>>

It's not what he wanted, VeraCrypt does not deletes the encrypted volume if you type the wrong password.
>>
>>54266341
I know, but I wanted to know how much exactly there was.
>>

Why then? To do statistics on the man pages? Like how much is an example and how much is just listing what the flags do?

What's the best beginner distro?
Mint?
Would it be hard to start with gentoo?
>>
>>54266399
if they knew the software that you were using and knew it had that feature they could just compile their own client with that option removed and brute force. So doesn't help you against a competant attacker. I think hidden folders would be better (so still decrypt but not the real juicy stuff) but IIRC there isn't really a way to do that without the attacker having a good idea that that has been done (eg comparing volume sizes etc) at which point they will just bring out their rubber hoses again.
>>
>>54267589
LFS is easier than Gentoo. Mint is a one man meme, best to stay away from it.

So im reading wikipedia and it comes to my attention

Testing conducted by Martyn Honeyford at IBM in January 2007 on Xubuntu 6.10 concluded that it "uses approximately 25 MB less application memory, and also eats significantly less into buffers and cache (which may imply that there is less file activity) than Ubuntu."[6]

Later testing showed that Xubuntu was at a disadvantage compared to Debian equipped with the Xfce desktop. Tests were conducted by DistroWatch on a Dell Dimension 4500 desktop machine, with an Intel 2 GHz processor and 384 MB of memory in April 2009, that compared Xubuntu 9.04 against an Xfce desktop version of Debian 5.0.1. These showed that Xubuntu used more than twice the RAM as Debian in simple tasks. Xubuntu also ran out of RAM doing everyday tasks, indicating that 384 MB of RAM was inadequate. The review concluded "It was obvious I had already run out of RAM and was starting to use swap space. Considering I wasn't doing very much, this was rather disappointing".[7] Subsequent experimentation by Distrowatch concluded that the performance advantages observed in Debian were due to Xubuntu's inclusion of memory-hungry software not present in Debian's implementation of Xfce.[8]

Testing conducted on a later version, Xubuntu 9.10 beta, in September 2009 showed similar results. The tests, conducted by Linux Magazine, concluded that Xubuntu 9.10 beta's RAM usage was actually greater than Ubuntu's 9.10 beta with GNOME.[9]

and im thinking, does that debian with xfce would out perform xubuntu on a laptop? How can a project like xubuntu even use more ram that debian, which its essentially based off of

I'm guessing your asking how long it would take to properly configure xen/KVM with a Linux host and a Windows guest given that you mentioned PCI pass through.
Few people have tried this and probably even fewer people who have also post on g, so your probably better off going to a KVM or xen forum of your choosing and search there.
Now what your gonna need is a board that supports VT-d aswell as IOMMU for full PCI pass through.
As for the time it would take you; that depends entirely on how familiar you are with Linux and how many hiccups you encounter along the way.

what driver issues? Usually a virtual machine has an simulated ethernet connection to your network via the host.
On Linux the first thing to check would be the logs, if your distro uses systemd (very likely) you can see them with journalctl

Wow when they they make the free version unavailable! Those for-profit bastards! It is still available from the debian main repo and has links to synergy-foss.org (not a thing) and a sourceforge repo (also not a thing) weird.

Hope that works for you
