Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Hello friends, Pajeet here requesting some techsupport with my Ubuntu 16.04 install on my Core2Duo laptop. I have the following two issues:
a) On resuming from standby, my WiFi gets disconnected and I have to restart the machine to get it working.
a) For some inexplicable reason, I have to click on 'Log Out...' twice to successfully log out. The first time does nothing.

These issues weren't present on 15.10, which I upgraded to 16.04.

Hello linux friends,

I have quite possibly the worst laptop;
-Intel aton N2600 @1.6ghz
-1280x1024 screen
-1gb ram
-300gb hdd

and im currently frustrated with the way windows runs on it.

So my question is whats the best lightweight distro for just doing stuff like
-browsing 4chan
-streaming from my home network
-reading doujin
-watching 4k videos (720p and below)
-bf4 on ultra

Im also concerned about driver issues however, especially with the trackpad and perhaps the speaker?

Thanks

Why stuff like that aren't enabled by default ?

I think you should be fine with Xubuntu or LXDE. I'm not too sure about watching 720p videos on it, though.

Can't help with the driver issues question, sorry.

Yes, probably.

Pros: In the event of catastrophic failure you have a fix. Plus if you still can't fix it from a live USB, it will at least give you access to a web browser.

Cons: Lose a flash drive you'd otherwise have for storage.

Repostan to get a little more feedback.

Anyone else running proprietary drivers? What would I need to hold so that I don't have to reinstall the drivers everytime there's an upgrade towards mesa and whatnot? I'd love to use Nouveau, but it's shit.

On this note, how's AMDGPU? I was tempted to downgrade to a 380 since it's pretty good under it, but having to build my own kernel seems like a hassle. I'd rather go and pick up Polaris after it gets some support.

Have a little more patience. Then have a cup of tea and think about these questions:
- would the nice people at /fgtl/ really know what Mabinogi is?
- is /fglt/ the right place for questions regarding video games?
- what is an .exe file? Could it be that it doesn't work on certain systems?
- Should I bump again? Has it been 10 minutes yet? Do these people maybe have other things to do right now?

then maybe come back to us

I wish I could help you, but I only run nvidia drivers on Debian. Haven't had a kernel update in quite some time ^^
I believe you have to recompile the drivers every time the kernel updates. Maybe that can even happen automatically, but that's way over my head. What are you running that gets so many updates? On Fedora 23 kernel updates break my wifi, but that happens once every month or so and it's manageable

also you can't run .exe files on Fedora or any GNU/Linux distribution. Either reinstall Windows or use Wine/PlayOnLinux
>>
Reposting in case someone has more ideas:

This is not entirely a Linux question, but I didn't feel like making a new thread for it.

So I switched to Arch as my main system, but I still need some Windows software like Office and Skype and some other work-related crap. I don't like the idea of this proprietary buggy shit spying and doing whatever it wants to my system, so I want it contained in a virtual machine. The question is: which windows version (7, 8.1, 10) is the best choice? They all are more or less comparable in terms of resource use, however 10 is a confirmed botnet, and 7 constantly bitching about upgrading is beyond good and evil. I also tried googling for any stripped down windows downloads or manuals for how to make one but only found TinyXP (which is sorta old i guess?). I bet there are people in the same situation as me here.
>>
>>54239106
I'm running Debian testing. The thing is that I'm running the drivers from Nvidia's website since the package from the repos isn't that updated. I guess apt doesn't know about it and it might replace some libraries from the nvidia driver.
>>
>>54239181
Wine?

Or use 8.1 since it has specific supports and a longer life than 7 will. You could always just use 10 and not let it have net access
>>
>>54239181
Yes, I'm in the same boat. I used to tutor a few years ago and got asked recently to tutor from Skype like the old days. I don't want to run it, so I'd rather use a VM. I think 8.1 is the best choice since you can find an activator and can download directly from Microsoft though I'd love to have other alternatives. Reading a bit from OBS or ffmpeg should be enough so I can stream enabling them to hear and see my screen, but the thing about Skype is that they can show me their work as well through screenshare. If there's any alternative in Linux, then I'd love to hear about it.

>>54239277
8.1 seems to suffer from the same telemetry updates as 7, however I can't find if that fucking "Upgrade to Windows 10 now" screens are there too. Still looks like a sane choice.

Wine does not offer any sandboxing at all, unfortunately. Also, I've previously tried to run Skype under Wine and got a weird bug: all my group conversations were gone from contacts list and I missed every message sent to them while I used it. I can't imagine how shitty the internals of Skype are so that this bug could ever appear. Didn't try with office though but I bet there will be even more weirdness.

Partly. The website of Linux Mint was cracked and the iso downloads were changed to backdoored isos. The whole thing went some hours till the site was fixed again. The distro itself was never cracked - that's just a meme.

GNU/Linux usually runs on every toaster. If Xubuntu already works for you, it means that you can basically use all distros.

Furthermore just download a bunch of different distro isos and try them in a VM, then decide which makes your next distro.

>>54239572

I don't understand the point of Mint. It's an older/delayed Ubuntu LTS with everything already installed and occasionally held back updates. You can install Cinnamon on regular Ubuntu.
>>
>>54239572
I've used Mint a bit and was very disappointed with their package management. Basically they parasitize on Ubuntu repos, and add their own repo on top of that with own packages as well as rebranded Ubuntu ones. Shit begins to happen when Ubuntu's packages update, but Mint's counterparts don't. If you 'apt-get dist-upgrade' at this point, expect problems. The Mint's own package manager attempts to mask those packages as unsafe to upgrade though, but in my opinion all of this is a shit-tier design decision.

We don't describe free software as an “alternative” to proprietary, because that word presumes all the “alternatives” are legitimate and each additional one makes users better off. In effect, it assumes that free software ought to coexist with software that does not respect users' freedom.

We believe that distribution as free software is the only ethical way to make software available for others to use.

I don't see how RAM usage (in terms of used RAM, not RAM activity) affects power consumption. I also doubt that RAM usage plays a big part power consumption wise. I'd say that your CPU and hard-drive consume substantially more.

My first impression is wow. That was so easy and i had 0 driver issues.

Secondly, holy shit, This is so much better than windows. everything is so smooth, so perfect and i dare i say "it just works".

My drive is also encrypted now and i can be sure that i have no spying going on (haha).

Also my battery life, which was my main concern is actually doible what it was before, and i appear to be able to get 6 - 9 hours with just web browsing.

So I doubt anyone here can really help me but, recently I bought a Chromebook CB35-B3340 knowing the audio won't work properly without a little work.

In Mint Linux I can get the speakers to work following these instructions.
https://github.com/brendenyule/NativeToshibaCB2Guide/wiki/Get-Audio-and-Hotkeys-Working

But when using Debian, the same guide doesn't work even though that's what everyone says to do on the Debian forums.

The problem I think I'm running into is that I'm not stopping alsa properly in Debian, but running
>sudo alsa force-unload
or
>sudo killall alsactl
both return
>no process found

Which doesn't make much sense since I can still give alsactl commands. Searching for alsa processes also turned up nothing.

Anyone know what might be the problem with alsa? I really want to use Debian over Mint but I can't if I can't get the sound to work.

The TV screen turns off and on, the taskbar on my laptop screen gets somewhat mixed (icons out of place, taskbar reversed, etc). It's confusing. Also the adapter itself gets dangerously hot sometimes.

When I plug my TV using Windows 8.1 it juzt werks.

I have a low opinion of Gentoo GNU/Linux.

Gentoo is a GNU/Linux distribution, but its developers don't recognize this; they call it "Gentoo Linux". That means they are treating me and the GNU Project disresepectfully.

More importantly, Gentoo steers the user towards nonfree programs, which is why it is not one of our recognized free distros.

Installing the fucking Catalyst package, everything i try to remove from the earlier xorg and video drivers has other dependencies, Catalyst somehow needs an outdated xorg which won't install because it conflicts with the newer version of Xorg which I can't remove because it depends on itself?

>>
>>54244037
PPAs are usualy created by the community; you should only add PPAs you trust. The sources.list contains the distro's official repos. You can add others (as example Kali repos on Debian), sometimes it works but mostly it breaks, so never add something there, except you know exactly what you're doing.

You can use nice or renice to set the process priority and taskset to set the cpu affinity, not sure if you can reserve a core though. I doubt changing to C would help much if the python script is just in a fairly tight loop anyway. Hiya guys, relative beginner here. Hopefully this isn't a question deserving of /sqt/.

So, I downloaded a GOG game from KickassTorrents to try it out and I ran the .exe with Wine. I liked the game and decided to buy it on Steam so I uninstalled the GOG version. Could my computer have been infected by that?

Is there a command in Debian to check the health of my USB stick? Like Check Disk?

Yes and no. It's possible to write a windows binary that fucks around with your GNU/Linux system, but usually scriptkids don't expect that (it doesn't make sense anyway) and write their shit for Windows only. So, in case you run some bad code in wine, it usually only affects the virtual drive located in ~/.wine.

tl;dr No.

man ntfsfix
>ntfsfix is a utility that fixes some common NTFS problems. ntfsfix is NOT a Linux version of chkdsk.
Maybe there is none? Have you tried fsck and seen what it said (you need to unmount the device first).

How do I switch to proprietary AMD graphics driver via command line in an Ubuntu based system

I know the command to get them is sudo apt-get install fglrx, but how do I switch to using them?
>>
>>54238417
How lightweight is stuff like numix? or does it not actually have an affect on ram/ cpu usage?
>>
>>54250568
They are more shit than the current radeonsi drivers and soon™ the just released amdgpu-pro will be even better. Just don't bother with catalyst, its deprecated.
>>
>>54250632
>amdgpu-pro

Is this avialiale for the *buntus yet?

And if it is do I just install it or do I have to mess with some configs to utilize it?
>>
>>54250568
If the fglrx drivers turn up it should switch automatically. Or you may need to blacklist the free ones. But if you have a recent ubuntu I believe that fglrx isn't supported anymore and you just need to install the firmware that the free driver will upload to the card to make it have more shiny. Maybe the firmware-amd-graphics package?
