When did you outgrow Unix, /g/?

I'll take that as a yes.

Why would I outgrow the worlds most advanced operating system?
>>
>>54225867

Ah hahaha nice meme, but an operating system with filesystem and memory management technology stuck over a decade ago can't be called "advanced", let alone "most advanced".

Why are you on /g/?
>>
>>54225661
I was never really even in Unix, so I guess never. Unix-like system called Linux is my choice currently. I don't even really see why there still are other systems but I'm assuming it's because people have the freedom to make poor choices if they want. I just hope they are making the choice with a free will instead of being force fed with no mention of alternatives existing.
>>
>>54225961
An operating system that needs to be restarted every time you do fucking anything can't really be called advanced, haaaa. Fuck off, winshill
>>

So you make your choice in the blind, huh?

Linux is a gigantic global project aiming to be an excellent system. If there's a competent person someone on this planet having an internet connection he or she can start improving Linux. It's like recycling, people gather to make something right and better for everyone. What could possibly be a better alternative for it? Something from a single company controlled by NSA?

Most people don't compile their own kernels, it is downloaded in binary form. It's updated very infrequently, and it's the only time you need to restart your system.
>>
>>54226359

The kernel is only a tiny very little relevant part of the OS, you retard.

That's why it's called GNU and not Linux btw.

GNU/Linux is a compromise because retards clung to code-monkey Torvald's kernel name.

Those who don't understand Unix are condemned to reinvent it, poorly.

RMS calls it GNU/Linux in order to give Torvalds credit, since he is starved for attention.

VMS is a rip off of UNIX. They even designed it with a POSIX layer so they could actually sell it to real customers.

Cutler is bigger than rms and Torvalds combine!

>I don't see why anything other than linux exists, I guess they're just blind to the fact that alternatives exist.

This is why I hate unix/linux people. They talk about the importance of choice and alternatives, but then go and say that they wish that only their choice existed.

Unix has destroyed variety in OS development. It's so depressing that the only practical option anybody has if they want to use a computer is unix or windows NT.

Unix users think that a future in which no operating systems other than unix-like operating systems exist is some wonderful dream we should aspire to.

In those days you have to basically clone UNIX (aka conform to POSIX) to sell a computer to a University or the government or military or defense contractors and other serious users.

Of course you didn't know this because you're a mere child from India.

It was literally a billion times better than a $15,000 Tadpole SPARC-top, or the $25,000 Conger SGI / MIPS-top which were the only other workstations in a laptop form factor at the time. Faster, longer battery life, etc.

Yes.
See ksplice, KernelCare, kpatch, kGraft, etc.

It's just that with the usage of hypervisor/vm it's less relevent on typical server.
With vm, you can reboot the physical server after migrating the whole running vm to the other server with zero down-time.

Lel, do you take seriously the pre made messages of installshield and related?
Unless you're installing some program who needs non PnP drivers you don't need to do that.
I concede that Windows Updates are a bit annoying because his integrated architecture and Microsoft way of shove them, but I don't find that bad in the big picture, specially considering the advantages of a thighly integrated system.

>Lel, do you take seriously the pre made messages of installshield and related?
It's usually not drivers, but pending move operations that got queued because a file that needed to be replaced was in use. You can resolve this in two ways: Read the registry key, see what files they are, use Unlocker, kill/close handle, delete the files and move the new ones into place. Or just reboot like the message says.

On Linux this is a non-issue because the kernel allows deleting files that are in use. It handles it quite nicely. Whatever's using the old version keeps using it after it's deleted, and the actual file remains on disk until the last open handle for it is closed. It just removes it from the directory tree so anything looking to open it will now find the file is gone. You can then put your new file there with the same name, with no conflicts. This solves so many issues without extra code: updating a core system library doesn't require some special code to replace it on next boot before anything uses it, like happens on Windows. The file just gets replaced.

No but:

Going from "almost never" to never is a good thing though.

And anyway you might not see weird behavior that is traceable to your failure to reboot after installing software either. Things fail in mysterious ways with Windows, this is why computer people tend to use a Unix(y) OS.

Pic related, the crowd at a Windows 10 event.

I bet iPads have AT&T code in them. The CSRG didn't remove a lot of code in the usl judgement.
