Whats your opinion about Xubuntu?
Why are there still complains about tearing?
is it still issue with 16.04?
Any up-to-date guide how to avoid it?

You can easily fix that (compton)

compton is not trivial
some settings can cause issues
would be nicer if after 10 years of complaining they would either update their compositor
or switch to compton and have sane, tested, defaults
>>
I've been using xubuntu 16.04 for today and it feels a bit faster than mint 17.3 on my really old laptop. Also I haven't seen any tearing.

It's overrated trash. Beginners recommend it to beginners who recommend it to beginners to other beginners. Kind of like Mint. They lik eit because it's what's they use(tm). And they never tried anything else.

What's a better distro that just works then?
The fact that a lot of beginners recommend it just shows that it's easy to use and that a lot of people like it
>>
>>54169424
Don't really see why people like you trashtalk Ubuntu and its derivatives. True, it might not be as good as it can be and there are better distros but Ubuntu is very user-friendly for the casual user who just wants a working OS without having to learn hundreds of commands. I personally like Ubuntu because it makes (GNU/)Linux available to more people.

I would really recommend Ubuntu MATE now if you want to use a lightweight GTK2 based distro/DE. Mate is being actively developed and is coming out with a bunch of interesting new features now.

xfce4 is really stable but getting kind of boring these days.

I wouldn't recommend what I use to beginners.

I don't understand what you find controversial about my post. If you want the perfect aesthetic user experience, you shouldn't be using Xfce. The whole point of Xfce is to be lightweight but still offer a full desktop environment.

I used Mint MATE and Cinnamon before. Font rendering was shit, theme was shit, shortcuts was shit, widgets didn't work properly, settings and customization was bare-bone, and the most annoying thing was that "yahoo as default search engine" bullshit. Totally wasted my time.

I've used Arch as a daily driver since 2011 and I'm really liking Xubuntu 16.04. It just werks and the new panel config manager is really nice to have. I can jump from a GNOME2 setup to a Windows setup in seconds with it. In no way is it overrated. Probably the best normie style distro going.

anyone knows if you can make panel behave like taskbar in windows?

>>
>>54170201
Maybe you try Ubuntu MATE now? Linux mint probably doesn't use the same great proprietary font rendering engine as Ubuntu does so the fonts won't look as good as Ubuntu. Also firefox in Ubuntu derivatives has google as the default search engine.

Mate seems to have a lot of customization now as in pic related.

Xfce stinks to arse. Ubuntu also. So...
>>
>>54169286
I found this on the Arch Wiki, and it seems to work on Xubuntu as well. Create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf with the following:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection

This won't work if you're using AMD or Nvidia though.

I would probably use Mutiny but I don't like how it behaves. For example if you have two windows open from the same application, and if you left click the icon, it'll automatically brings up one or both (I can't remember) window instead of allowing me to choose which window to bring up.

That alone made me go nope and afaik there's no way to change that. Instead I just use the classic window picker w/e it is called.

DockbarX works great on xfce. I haven't tested it with 16.04 since I'm trying out KDE now (it actually seems stable now), which has it built in, and dockbarx can take a while to set up to not look like ass but it works well.

I tried Ubuntu and some flavors, Debian, Fedora, Manjaro and finally settled with Arch. To me, Ubuntu was the best out fo the bunch and Xubuntu it's best flavor.
Of course, I've been using Arch for years now, so I don't know no ubuntu mates. Don't wanna either. I'd still recommend Xubuntu real heartfelt.

We have Xubuntu installed at multiple measurement stations at work.

It is light, works on even crappies machines and can be left without updates to just run single program.

In my opinion, this is pretty much what Linux is for.
>>
I recently tried out a few other *buntu flavors in response to the new LTS release. (A couple 16.04 releases, and Elementary based on the previous LTS) Ditched them all and went back to Xubuntu.

The novelty of eye-candy in other DE's wore off within an hour for me, as I got used to it and started focusing solely on the content I was dealing with once more. I'm not looking for that much customization, and XFCE has what I need and doesn't load on much beyond that. Every other DE I've tried has had something wrong with it that drove me to switch; XFXE might be on the bland side, but the simplicity has left it with no glaring problems.

Fuck it, it's just the nicest to use. (And the screen tearing is so easily fixed that complaints are invalid.)
