If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I thought you also shouldn't have battery at 100% plugged in all the time, because higher temperature damages the cells. That is why I unplug when reach 100% and I've been putting to charge at 10% because that is when Windows warned about low battery

question for you x61 tablet users on linux with opengl:
what does the output of
glxinfo
say about your
OpenGL renderer string
and
OpenGL version string
?

almost all x61t's at http://linux-hardware.org/index.php?view=computers&type=notebook&vendor=Lenovo have
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM
and
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 10.5.3

my mesa in gentoo only works with i915 drivers but my chipset supports i965 :(

I agree with you guys, but as a recycler/reseller if I'm gonna put all that shit on there I'm gonna be selling it for the maximum.

Which reminds me about how boss wants to open up a computer shop, the other guy who manages me doesn't like the idea of putting linux on our desolate $100 machines, but he's being a bitch because he doesn't like google sheets and wants M$ word (yet he is the type who doesn't want to buy it for his own machine.)

>>54092825
Eh, they are worth about $140 max without freetard work being done. Depends if you want to pay extra for your linux4u community to make it special.

>was supposed to install linux on 4 thinkpads this week, fix the laserdisc player and clone Windows 98/2000 on the 380Z I have

>>54093660
Maybe because new OEM batteries don't depreciate like used computer equipment. The cost of batteries is always a very slow decline. Just hope to get lucky to buy OEM Refurb'd batteries from $35 and up.

Currently have an T520, but want something smaller to carry around for school. Anyone here familiar with the X1 Carbon, how does it compare to the X260? What can and can't be upgraded? So far all I know is the Ram is soldered and the keyboard doesn't look removable for replacement. Would have considered an X220, but the resolution on those are horrid.

Ebay. £25 was the 'buy it now' price, with the extra three for delivery.

The capacity looks to be solid. Between 8 and 10 hours seems to be the prediction, i'm still on 50% from my first charge yesterday.

How can I check who manufactured it? I have the box with various serial numbers and the leaflet here with me.

>X1C3 owner reporting
I had one for three months, a refurb with i5-5200u 4K IPS, 8GB RAM (I think?, maybe 4GB), and 128GB HDD that I upgraded to 256GB.
The machine lasted a LONG time on battery, I did get up to 8 hours of battery life while running Linux Mint.
Having an IPS ThinkPad was great, I had to zoom in on webpages but I didn't care, krita and photoshop worked fine on it.

The soldiered RAM can be a problem, as RAM can fail from time to time, for me, it was a bit too flimsy to use, I'd say it was too thin, I didn't like how thin it was. Now in contrast its performance wasn't great at all, I had a T430 and it kicked butt when it came to computing and gaming, the slim HSF and fan just can't do it.
Not sure what OS you are going to use but I am a big fan of the ChromeBook Pixel, the build quality is great on that thing, now I am not sure how well the Pixel will be long term against the X1C but definately the lid on the pixel feels more stiffer and stronger to me, rather than the wedge at the top of the screen gives it too much flex imo. Also the keyboard feel a shit... because its backlit I think.

I've yet to get an X260 but after owning an T440p I don't think the new design is that bad, def more tougher than the X1C, yet somehow the T440p sucked at gaming w/ W8.1 Pro compared to my T430s running linux... yeah. However it did feel I got like 6 hours of battery life on the T440p.

Whats your budget, what do you need it for and what would you like for it to do?
>>
>>54092825

I paid $100 for a T400 with 3GB of RAM and a mechanical hard drive.

After bumping up to 6GB and throwing in a cheap SSD I was only at like $150 spent.

You can flash libreboot yourself if you really wanted to (or find your nearest LUG and offer to buy one of the members a 12 pack if they do it for you), and a new wireless card is like $10.

I bought a refurb T420 2 weeks ago, and I have since done some cool modifications.

Took out the spinning HDD and put in a 500gb VNAND 850 EVO

Took out the disk drive and put another 250 gb Kingston SSD with an adaptor. That drive runs windows, the 850 EVO runs my Mint/Ubuntu.

Added 2 more USB 3.0 slots

Put in 8 GB of some HIGH QUALITY RAM, didn't skimp out on that shit

Any other mods that you guys think I should do?

kek, I was hoping for something like that. I'm interning at a molecular biology lab and they have all sorts of reagents here that could be useful. Just used some isopropanol last week. My ThinkPad is in for a nice wash.

FYI, you can probably add the Bluetooth 4.0 daughter card that the X230 and beyond use, even if the T420 doesn't officially support it.

You may get better battery life if you go with BT 4.0 over BT 3.0, and it doesn't really break the bank (got me a BT 4.0 on ebay for less than $12, although I also got a BT 3.0 for less than $4 a long time ago)

P.S. does your USB 3.0 expresscard work without any problems on windows? cause mine is giving me problems

Since you mention it, I've found that automatically connecting my bluetooth headphones causes desyncing problems on playback.

The workaround to this is to manually connect them each time by setting the headphones in "pairing mode" (i.e. don't let it auto connect to anything no matter what), opening playback devices in Windows, right clicking the bluetooth device and click connect.

You may need to uninstall all the bluetooth drivers first before it works at all if you want to try this.

Had a T420, 430, 440 and 450s. Just got an EliteBook 840 G3. HP got rid of the tool-less back cover on the G3 model which was quite upsetting. The build isn't as nice as my Lenovo products and the HP BIOS preboot checks take forever regardless of UEFI or legacy booting. Additionally it's missing the power management functions my previous ThinkPads had.

But I managed to get a top trim model (i7 6600u, 16GB RAM, 256GB PCIE SSD, 2560 x 1440 IPS display, etc) with a dock for about $1300. Far less than I could have gotten an equivalent ThinkPad. And the hardware level LAN/WLAN switching is nice... I wish Lenovo did that. Two DIMM slots, M.2 NVME and a 2.5" SATA are also good. Not sure if you can use the 2.5" while M.2 is populated though.

>>
>>54096225
I saw an X1C at a shop and didn't like the build quality. It didn't feel robust enough. An X260 would be small and light enough for an 8 year old.

>>54096252
Any reason to upgrade from a T430 to a 440? I wanted USB3.0 and a 1600x900 screen, so I went for a T430 from my T420. I got it in mint condition too, with a perfect battery.

I'd rather wait a year or two and get the T450 rather than buy the 440 now, unless theres a big advantage.
>>
>>54096225
You could just go for a C3 for a lot less money and only marginally worse performance

>>54096293
The screen is a huge improvement. But between the 440 and 450 there's really not much difference besides a marginally faster processor and a better touchpad (which you can drop in a 440 anyways)
>>
>>54096205
Maybe. The touchpad is better on the T450 than on the T440 simply because of the pointing stick mouse buttons. But I think it can be retrofitted to the T440.

With that being said, I never really adjusted to the whole click pad thing. Part of the reason why I even started looking at EliteBooks in the first place.

If you're an every few years kinda guy, I would skip the T440/50. They were my least favorite. Battery life was super questionable too on both models.

>>54096293
I agree, I was sadly dissapointed with the build quality.
I really liked the T430, even more than the T420 despite it having chicklet keys, so when I had the X1C3 with the backlit keys, it just didn't feel the same.
However, the T430s I daily, I did notice that the keyboard feel wasn't as awesome on the T430, but I think its because its slimmer which makes the keyboard a bit lower on the hands. I guess its OCD but I did find the slightly thicker chassis R61 way better to type on than the T61, T60 and T400, but the X300 blows it out the park.

Anywho, when I got the backlit keys, they are smooth and not textured, and I did feel a slight bit of difference on them too... as awesome it is having a 12GB RAM 128GB SSD, 1080p 98% adobe RGB panel on my machine... build quality isn't just the same like old machine

Anywho.
I doub't you need the i7, I would think the X260 would have better performance since i presume it has a better cooling HSF.

Also I paid $900 for my X1C3, 3 months later I had to sell it to buy a car since my civic got stolen. I sold it for $675, even after upgrading the HDD to 256GB...
Unless its extremely spotless, a laptop depreciates 20% to 40% after a months of use... at least in the eBay world it does.
This P70 has been on eBay for a few weeks, but people are weary about buying it, despite being a good deal (to me at least)

>>
>>54096293
I couldn't comment on your upgrading because muh tangent.

Anywho, I got a T440p to try the IPS panel upgrade from laptopscreen.com. I did like it, though its viewing angles weren't as awesome as my T430s. T440s can be upgraded as well, T440 can not. I did notice some problems with running windows 8.1, it seemed to be slower... not sure why, perhaps because of cooling? because its heatsink wasn't the greatest (single pipe for the integrated gpu model I used).

Also the T450 can be IPS swapped as well, which makes it IMO better than the T440, plus you don't even have to worry about swapping the touchpad.

>>54096436
I have relatively low standards since I played games and watched movies on my first laptop, an Inspiron with a 1366 screen. I like the T430's screen with 1600 now and can always watch movies on my fullHD tv if I need to.

>>54096442
I like my T430 a lot too and I'll probably use it for years to come. Its just that I have this fucking bug that makes me want all the new stuff too.

>>54096446
It gets a little bothersome when I go from sitting to lying down and I have to adjust the screen, but its not that big a deal. I guess the colors are a bit dull, even compared to my Nexus 6, but I have low standards.

>>54096465
I loved the keyboard on the T420, but the chiclet isn't the issue with the T430. It's great and I can type just as fast. It's the layout (top right corner, delete insert keys etc.) thats a bitch. Like Louis Rossman said, there are no cues to let you differentiate between the different keys. Same with the function keys. I have to look for them when I wanna use them.

>>54096502
I like the solid builds of the thinkpads better too. Feels better overall, even when carrying as it fits better in your hand and doesn't feel fragile. I suppose we both have similar OCD's.

Sucks that your civic got stolen. No chance of the police finding it?

>>54096674
When a network cable is plugged in, the WLAN device is disabled. It's a small but nice feature. Dell and HP offer this as a BIOS option. I like it because it supersedes what the OS wants to do, which occasionally can be wrong.

>>54101576
He is just being a moron, there is nothing wrong with the T420. If you are going to only have one device I would go T420 as it is much more capable due to being able to have a quad core chip in it. With a quad core, 16gb of ram, a dock and whatever HDD config(can have 2 2.2 inch drives and 1 msata) you want.

On the other hand the x220 can do most of that but it lacks the second 2.5 inch drive and is limited to only a dual core. You also don't get as high a resolution display (1366x768 vs 1600x900) although you can have IPS on the x220 without excessive modding.

All up to you in the end. Because I have a desktop I have an x230 but if I was say living in a dorm and only had space for one computer i would be running a T4XX laptop with a dock and eGPU.

Remap control to capslock? or Fn to capslock? The latter is a brilliant idea.

>>54104207
No, you shouldn't. The "standard" positions of ctrl and fn make laptops more annoying to use than they should have to be. The Thinkpad positioning makes more sense to migrate to from a desktop keyboard, where you have ctrl, super, and alt right next to each other. fn is an addition to the keyboard rather than an interloper, and it makes it very easy to activate Thinklight in the dark. This design decision wouldn't have stuck around for as long as it has if there wasn't good thought behind it.

Saying this as someone who has both an x230 with the IPS screen and a T420 with 1600x900 screen in front of me right now:

The T420 screen is not that terrible for general use but really blows for movies, especially in dark scenes where no matter how you tilt the screen, the colors invert in the shadows. The X230 is nicer for watching media but has some backlight bleed and some shiny spots on the screen where it rubs against the keyboard, and 1366x768 is just too small for running an IDE or having two PDFs side by side.

The X230 keyboard still feels all right, the changed key shape is not that bad, it's the layout that's more annoying. I don't know why they put printscreen where they did. It mostly only annoys me switching back and forth, because I reach for page up and page down on the T420 and they are actually the browser back and forward buttons.
>>
>>54105315
Get the E6400 for that money, it's a better built machine, and you get a 1440x900 screen for coding and web stuff. the E4300 has DDR3, but the buss of a Penryn chip is only 1066mhz and dual channel DDR2 is plenty for what it is.

Hello /g. I recently bought a T460, and have since upgraded the HDD to an SSD. My question is, I have read that Skylake and Linux are not getting along right now. As of Linux Kernel 4.3, there are massive performance and power use differences when compared to Windows 10.

Is there anything smaller than an x220 with a decent screen and a clitmouse?

How is the x131e as a glorified Facebook machine?

X201 half an inch smaller, but about same weight

My new x100e is over heating and shutting down when its too hot. I found out the guy that sold it have made some apu swap and was selling it as 1st gen. of Neo apu. I boosted a bit the ram yet why is it over heating? Is it thatthe termal pasted is dried?

I know people wil say that because I bought a x100e but I really like its format/size its so comfy.

>he thinks 5ghz is better than 2.4GHz
in actuality, 5ghz works best the closer you are, and fails going thru 2 or 3 walls
it also avoids the interference given off by lan phones, microwaves, and the fucking toaster oven at work where it cuts my wifi signal off when you use the toaster oven

the liquid inside the heat pipes of the heatsink breaks down into solids if it is heated too much
best option is to replace heatsink (forced to install new thermal paste)

I concur, trackpoint is great because you get to keep your hand at home row, unless you are search and pick type of typist.

Though I do use a mouse at the office and at work, just better than a touchpad for the most part if I'm not typing much.

imo its kinda comfy, reminds me of my MW2 Xbawks days.

Makulu

Arguably I'd say so, since those can be bought with IPS displays if you got the cash and they also have MXM GPUs which might be cost effective.

Sadly... no, there isn't a 9 Cell available for that system.

Also looking at the motherboard, there doesn't seem to be an ultrabay battery connector either, so you're funked.

Install with compatibility settings during install process. Worked on the T440p but not with the X1C3.

Are T420's automatically multivoltage?
I'd like to take one to Nippon, but the electricity is 100 volts there.

Is buying cheap genuine batteries on ebay worth? Like one for 28$. Will it be doa?
>>
My previous laptop broke and I am low on finances right now. I have around 180 dollars to spend on a laptop. Is the t420 my best bet? I have a 2.5ghZ 8gb ram refurb model picked out but I'm worried of pulling the plug nd getting a machine that isn't going to last me at least another year or so. Any other options maybe with newer hardware?

>Is buying cheap genuine batteries on ebay worth? Like one for 28$. Will it be doa?

No. Often times they are simply shit. Barely hold a charge. Also, they usually don't meet standards the manufacturer implements. Fake batteries can even damage your laptop. Or spontaneously combust.

There was a seizure of a load of those hoverboards here in the UK at some tech expo because they'd been banned because the batteries and motors were bursting into flames.

And if you've ever seen a bad battery go up, you don't want it in your phone in your pocket, or in your laptop on your lap.

So gotta buy a brand new one at 130$?
>>
The price of official Thinkpad batteries is ridiculous.
>>
>>54110348
just get one on ebay. if it dies after a year better than spending a bunch on something that could die in a year
>>
>>54110488
A knockoff? Or a used lenovo one?
>>
>>54110496
Well. I guess a used would be fine. But truly depend son the seller and what they say.
