Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Want to buy a new battery for my W520, going to get a genuine Lenovo battery, but what's the difference between the 55+ and 70++ 9 cell batteries? Does the 70++ hold a longer charge?

Also anyone know of a 1080p IPS screen swap for the W520? The default TN screen isn't that bad, but an IPS one would be ideal.

I can steal one, possibly two of these from work but they're bitlocker encrypted. Will swapping the HDD out get around that, or would the BIOS still be locked?
>>
>>54075683
I think you could evade Bitlocker by swapping the HDDs, but if Computrace is activated or the BIOS has a password, you're fucked. The password is difficult to remove, but doable. I don't know if there's anything you can do to get rid of Computrace if it gets activated.

I bought a T420 on ebay for $120 recently. It hasn't arrived yet, but how I'm reading that the display is really shitty. I'm thinking I should have gone with the X220. Is the display really that horrendous? Is it worth replacing?
>>
>>54076003
It's really bad, but the X220's isn't much better. There's an Alienware panel that fits the T420 perfectly which provides a good upgrade to colors and viewing angles.

With the transition to Ultrashits, the general trend has been to make it as hard to service as possible with soldered or glued everything
That being said, the ThinkPad-like Elitebooks and Precisions/Latitudes are very serviceable, with the former having pretty much everything under 1 cover. And in terms of actual parts, if the processor is still socketed, chances are the memory, battery and storage are easily replaceable. Exception of course being the ThinkPad X series and those like it from other manufacturers - soldered processor
If you like pissing around I guess, consumer laptops had replaceable parts too as per prior to the Ultrashit revolution

I'm not sure if you guys can help me but I'm starting to lose my patience with this.

tlp-stat -b gives me this, too:

Do you think it would be possible to swap out the interior of an X220 with something modern and low power?
I'm wondering if it would be possible to put an Atom motherboard inside it in a few years time, to get better battery life as well as new deciding options. Obviously you'll get far less performance, not to mention all the ports you wouldn't have. But it seems very difficult to find a modern laptop, which is both durable and with a great keyboard.

>should i go for a genuine Lenovo or are there any worthy knockoffs?

The "knockoffs" are generally better than the original.

Laptop manufacturers use whatever cells they can source the cheapest, and they don't really care about their reputation when it comes to the battery.

Dedicated battery manufacturers do have a reputation to maintain.

Just ordered new thinkpad yoga 260. I sold my surface pro 3 this week and added yoga to my shipping card on friday. I tried really hard not to order it but gave in moments ago.

Hopefully it'll be worth it, I had to top up my surface selling money by $500 to get it. Which in the end is not that bad as I bought my surface few months short two years ago. In fact, I have to admit that surface pro's warranty is pretty exceptional, I still had half a year of warranty left which translates to 2,5 years of free warranty.

Yeah, of course, but you couldn't get i5-4300U machines under a grand in sub-13" category two years ago. Even though I have somewhat dislike of MS in general, I have to admit that they make quality hardware with competitive pricing and their support for surface pro line is really good.

There are different types of HD4000 iGPU. i3s got the slowest option, i5 slightly faster ones and i7 the fastest iGPUs.

/tpg/ i need your Help!
Im currently using a t420s but im thinking about getting a 12" Thinkpad for mobility.
Are there any struggles with longer typing sessions (programming etc) with a 12" thinkpad because of the shorter palm rest?
I've struggles if I should choose the x220 or the x201t (tablet).
The x201t im looking for has a 16:10 (Masterrace) Screen and Multitouch+Pen
It'll also come with a new 9 cell battery
How long will one does it run with a full battery and only typing on gVim with Wlan and 80% Screen brightness?
Or shall i rather go with an x220?

I just wish the resolution was slightly better. 1024x768 kind of hurts.

I actually vastly prefer the keyboard that came with my T410s to the T60. Although the one that came with my W520, while ostensibly the same, felt noticeably worse, go figure.

Macs might have an ok access to HDD and RAM on the older models, but not being able to replace your CPU or replacing the disc drive is not fun.

My only issue is that Elitebooks ask for T8 screwdrivers instead of just philips like everyone else.
Also I do not care for their flex cable clampers when it comes to the keyboard/mouse/hardware buttons because they are sort of flimsy.

They could of been a simple plug like Dells and ThinkPads.

Sure, but I wouldn't feel too bad at the current price if it's in great condition.

>>54086682

I would be down to purchase a X220 or even a X200, but I need something as soon as possible. I really cannot afford dragging around my T410 to school and to work. The small size that the X100E offers is what I need. I'm not doing anything particularly intensive. Mainly just using a word processor and possibly watching videos on it. I have my T410 and my gaming rig for more intensive things.

>>54086729

It would work, but I don't think You'd have a good time. Get something with at least a C2D and 2GB RAM, 4 if you plan to do anything remotely heavy at any time.

More power saving tips? I love my X220. I was really lucky with my ebay lottery, the battery had less than 50 cycles and in perfect condition.
That was in August, now I have 253 cycles. CPUID HWMonitor says 20% wear. Design capacity is 62.16 Wh and now the max is 50.33
I've been doing charge to 100%, unplug, get to 10%, charge till 100% again and so on. Is 20% wear after 8 months bad?

I have the X201T. If you have any further questions, ask.
>Are there any struggles with longer typing sessions (programming etc) with a 12" thinkpad because of the shorter palm rest?
>How long will one does it run with a full battery and only typing on gVim with Wlan and 80% Screen brightness?
With a bit used up 4400mAh battery and no power tuning, I get about 3-4 hours. With tuning and a new one, I'd say 5-6h is possible.
I don't have problems with that, but maybe I just got used to it.

Ok I've set that up now, how do I know it's working and would you be kind enough to explain what it's actually doing and how that helps?
