Today my computer is getting stuck at the "Starting Windows" part. I left it there all morning and it didn't get past it.

I tried using system restore, startup repair, chkdsk, memory check, etc. But it didn't fix it.

I tried to start in safe mode but it gets stuck after loading driver amdkmpfd.sys.

Google wasn't much help and microsofts page says to go and modify the registry but I feel like I'm gonna fuck up.

What do?

Alright so i got that rainmeter thing set up now, i used this one to replace the all cpu meter (it's basically a fork of it if you will);

>iamanai.deviantart.com/art/illustro-Gadgets-1-0-0-576638584

It's pretty neat so far but the only gripes i'm having is that i can't find the settings to change the length of this window (i already removed the page file and some other info i didn't want from the .ini but the size is still the same as before) and there also doesn't seem to be any way to change the update interval for the measurement info being shown. I also want to move the clock speed info to the top as it was before with the gadget.

Right now it updates the values every second but i want it to only update every 3 secs or so. Can someone lend me a hand here because i really can't code to save my life

Oh and it would also be nice if there was a way to recolor the entire scheme of this skin so that i can use the saved hex values from the old all meter gadget which i saved and give it the exact same look as before, but that's not a top priority for me right now 2bh

Sounds fucked. Reinstall. You can use a live Linux or even the Windows install disc to copy files you want to keep out to another disk or USB stick. To get a file explorer from a Windows install disc, shift+F10 when you get to the first screen. It'll open a command prompt. From there run explorer to open a file manager.

BTW, if you don't have anywhere to back up files to and want to keep them anyway, use the above tricks to copy the files to some new dir you create in C:\, then delete *everything* else on the disk, including C:\Windows and the various system files in C:\. Then proceed to do a normal install, but instead of deleting existing partitions, click the big C: one and tell it to install into it. Not quite as clean as a full reformat, but close.

I just found and installed some guys' design who did an exact (and i really do mean exact) copy of the allgadgets meter suite;

This is pretty damn amazing, he even got the CPU logo displayed in there down to a notch like before. Very well-crafted indeed

Pretty much this. You are the one person who knows the company's systems inside and out. When shit goes wrong, you know how to fix it.

>but if you're good at your job your hard work will go unnoticed because everything will work smoothly.
Yes, and eventually they lay you off and hire a cheap guy to do the job because "nothing ever seems to go wrong and you're just sitting around most of the time". Then they come crawling back to you after about a week when their email is all messed up, none of the printers work, and the server is spewing random errors. This is your chance -- you will fix it, but only if they bring you back on with higher pay.

Or, you periodically remind them of your importance. If nothing has gone wrong for a good while, quietly cause a small disaster and be the hero by quickly putting everything right again.

I'm going to be tossing this computer(along with the HDD) to a buddy of mine who needs it more than me and I'll be upgrading to a new rig.

What's a proper way of completely nuking the HDD that won't take a year and a half? I have a USB with an Ubuntu installer on it. Will a wipe from that be sufficient enough or do I need a dedicated program?
>>

http://www.dban.org/
>>
>>54042467
I doubt he would give a shit enough to recover your data after youve written Ubuntu over it. It should be clean enough, if you do a regular install it will delete everything on it and make it a blank slate of Ubuntu
>>
>>54042467
DBAN.
Multiple wipes are needed.
>>
>>54042467
>>54042489
If using DBAN, make sure you set it to just 1 random pass and 1 zero pass. Maybe skip the random pass and just one zero pass. After simply zeroing a drive, you need at the very least, expensive equipment that can control the drive and capture the analog signal from the drive head, and you have to know non-public details about this particular HDD model's on-disk layout and encoding.

Anything more than 1-2 passes is silly unless you've got something on there that the CIA desperately wants.

HDDerase is faster and potentially more secure than DBAN. It's faster because it simply tells the drive to erase itself rather than generating and streaming the data to write to it. It's potentially more secure because if you have any remapped sectors, internal secure erase will wipe them while anything accessing the drive normally through its firmware can't touch them.

http://cmrr.ucsd.edu/people/Hughes/Secure-Erase.html
Download it there. Or, a good bootdisk with it and a decent selection of SATA drivers, is included on the UBCD.

Only if you are storing nuclear launch codes and the CIA is after them.

People had devices to connect them to PCs. These were either available for purchase from Hong Kong, occasionally in stores as "have all your games in one cartridge" devices or for savegame backup, but could be used with custom software to dump ROMs to a PC. And occasionally people made their own, generally a PIC microcontroller or similar talking to the cartridge or ROM chip desoldered from it, and talking to the PC over parallel or serial.

I had a 750 ti, pretty much identical performance to a single HD5870 in battlefield 4, which was the only game I played at the time.

On high settings the 750 ti was around 5 fps faster, I gave it to my sister and my 5870 is collecting dust. 5770 crossfire outperformed it.

Currently my 5870 is giving me 55-65fps on low in gta 5 and 5770 crossfire is giving me 65-75fps when I last swapped it out to compare.
With 5870 crossfire I should be able to turn some settings up and maintain 60fps.

I have a friend who just upgraded, willing to sell his 5870 for 60 aud. I'm honestly considering it.

Dual gtx 570 is from another friend for $150(75 each), and the 670 is around the same price online. Same with hd 7950.

[citation needed]
To software-only solutions, and really anything talking to it over ATA, the hard disk is a simple, linear block device. Store something at a location and it will stay there, and the previous contents there are lost. Even if the drive has reallocated the sector or otherwise decides to keep the old value around inside like a wear-leveling SSD might, you can't access it without interfacing with the storage inside the drive more directly. And mere software can't do that, because the drive's own firmware only presents to it a block of sectors.

Maybe what you've read is that files can be recovered using free software after a mere *format*. Format leaves the previous data in place on most sectors. It merely overwrites the directory that says where it all is with one that says there isn't anything and all space is open.

A proper wipe (or "full" format in Win7 and newer) will overwrite all the sectors.

Why do you need GPT for RAID 1? Hardware RAID exists at a lower level than partition tables and doesn't care how you partition and format what's inside it. Windows Dynamic Volume software "RAID" should work fine on MBR.

I'm looking at the MSi 970 motherboard. It says that it can't support CPUs that use over 200w.

The fx8350 is rated at 125W but this website (http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2012/11/06/amd-fx-8350-review/7) says it uses 213w at load (over 350w overclocked).

Does this mean I'll run into problems with this mobo?

Yes, where the website offers to auto detect, don't. There's a selector under it where you can select device type, family and exact model, and download the driver directly.

You also have a choice here between classic CCC or Crimson.

>>
>>54043904
I dunno, these days with the limits you run into in transferring the data to/from your storage medium I think the gap between very fast internet connections and physically moving the data is closing fast. For example Wikipedia uses this example:

>Similarly, as of 2016 the highest capacity backup tape format available is LTO-7, with a capacity of 6 TB. If a tape of this capacity were sent by overnight mail and were to arrive around 20 hours after it was sent, the effective data rate would be 664 Mbit/s. With networking technology, this magnitude of speed over this distance would be very difficult to attain without a costly dedicated connection as one would likely need to use several hops and have a connection that is not oversubscribed.

But they completely ignore the amount of time it takes to get the data onto those tapes in the first place. Once you start to factor that in you probably could have just sent it faster over the network, assuming suitably high speeds. Similarly it may have to be copied back off the tapes on the other end, adding even more time to the process.

It only really seems practically to me to physically move the data medium as a time-saving measure when the data is already sitting on some portable form of storage that is ready for transport.
