IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

eGPU works with the express card, anything below the *30 series has the option.

>>54027804
I found the real estate with 14" 1600x900 is a lot more comfy than a 12.5" 1366x768.

But god damn is the TN panel horrible on the 420s.
>>
So what SSDs does /tpg/ like?

I've been thinking about ordering a 250GB Samsung 850 Evo for my X220.

Anyone have any experience with that specific SSD?
>>
>>54027839
I'm running an 850 evo on my T420 right now, had it in my X220 before.

No problems at all, it's a solid drive. I would recommend it.
>>
>>54027824
Someone on Reddit found an Alienware display that fits, though I don't think anyone here has tried it yet.
>>
>>54027877
Hey I'm the guy who ordered one, it's sitting right beside me (>>54026500). Just waiting for the HD+ LCD cable to arrive.

I did a dry fit of the screen yesterday, it fits perfectly without any modifications. All of the mounting points line up and the dimensions are the exact same.

I'll document the install once I get the cable and update the wiki etc. Looking forward to it, from what I can see the screen is wayyyy better then the piece of shit TNs that ship stock.
>>
>>54027877
>>54027916

Might do this. Let me know how it goes.

The FHD mod apparently consumes an excessive amount of battery and plus it would cost a lot more than if I did the alienware display.

If it's that much better I just might do it and replace my hinges at the same time. Anybody here have experience with replacing the hinges?
>>
>>54027943
Yeah, I was debating the FHD mod but there were a bunch of problems: the thing consumed a lot of power and the screen constantly flickered due to insufficient RF shielding.

I'll make sure to do a detailed post about the upgrade.

What's wrong with the hinges on your thinkpad?

So I may be bringing home a T420S tomorrow, very possibly for free. It has the 900p screen, 16GB RAM, the i5-2520M, and no hard drive. I will also be bringing home a second one that has some damage, which will be used for parts later down the road.

I am already planning all my upgrades. For sure an SSD, probably a second battery for the media bay, and maybe even an i7-2640M for shits and giggles. What other upgrades should I consider? I am not sold on mSATA because it is only SATA2.

The only concern I have is the screen. I am very, very used to 1080p. Is the 900p screen noticeably different? Is it good quality? What 1080p options do I have?
>>
>>54028871

1080p to 900p isn't as bad as say 720p, but it's still noticeable. You'll adjust though. The T420s does have 1080p screen replacements.

Pixel 2 is amazing, such a big improvement over the original which I liked a lot, its predecessor's processor was very underpowered. It ran hot and didn't have much battery life, but very improved now.

I like the subtle design changes, much more smoother system than the original, dat 9 hour battery life. Supposedly the screen was a bit better too.

Can't say much about the XPS 13, haven't had one yet, other then you can have whatever OS you wish and memory options at the expense of a lame webcam position.
>>
>>54029577
yeah, the thing is I can sell my thinkpad yoga for $500 and the xps would only be another $100 drop in the bucket. a pixel would be another $300-500.

Hi there, Read the buyers guide.
While i enjoy thinkpads myself, i was thinking about getting a thinkpad for a family member.

They are:
>older
>play shitty memebook flash games
>browse memebook and youtube
>do not download anything
>does not know what a torrent is
Do you think a thinkpad would be good for them? They can use Linux quite well. They currently use an old dell laptop i loaned them with debian jessie installed. They are complaining about low quality game performance, So what thinkpad do you think i should get them?

Just about anything. Even the worst SSDs these days will probably outlive and obviously outperform any HDD you can buy.

Well, fuck Sony. After the 840 EVO fucked me in the ass, I'll never buy another Samsung storage device, ever.

And I'm not just talking about the "old data gets slower" problem. I had an 840 EVO that got astonishingly slow on *all* data after about eight months of use.

If getting a good Precision, W sereis Elitebook, P series ThinkPad, you're gonna have to get a display port to HDMI adapter.

Also remember you could always upgrade the RAM after buying and save some dosh, I believe most quadcore i7 laptops come with 4 RAM slots, dualcore i5 and possibly dualcore i7's only come with 2 slots, maybe wrong on the dualcore i7 part, its late.

Not many recent tenkeyless laptops that are 15" or bigger, you'll probably have to settle for 14" if so.

Anyone use a laptop base to make it higher? Some of the tables at my university are too low for me.

I usually just put my DSi XL inside its case under the back of my T510 an it does the job. Found this one on ebay
>>
Hey guys, quick question:

I've ordered this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T420-i5-2520M-Professional/dp/B00QVOKC66?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00

i5-2520M 2,5GHz, 8GB RAM

Do you think this will be able to play CSGO on low settings and low (1024~) res at a constant 60+ FPS? It's not the reason I got it, I game on my PC, but would be nice if it was a possibility. I only play on low settings and low res on my PC anyway.

Cheers :)
>>
>>54033066

>>
>>54033106

it's an AMD (ATI) 7870 2GB.

What would that involve? I guess the only time I'd be wanting to use my laptop instead of my PC would be when I'm not at this home (at uni) and don't have access to my PC
>>
Buyers guide says i shouldn't get a used thinkpad T510 for more than $210. but the only one i could find locally is almost $400. i might be able to negotiate it down to $350. the device itself is in great shape. my question is; is it worth it?
No other T, X or W series are available. Plenty of R and L.
>>
what does that red key do?
>>
>>54033539
Ah, I don't know about AMD dude. Sorry.
Here's the link to what i'm talking about: http://www.geforce.co.uk/geforce-experience/gfe-beta

It lets you play games being streamed from a remote machine with a recent (gtx 660 or later) nvidia GPU to any machine via a google chrome plugin on their end.

The reviver can watch you, play instead of you, or play at the same time as you with shared controls. (The game is capped at 720p and 30fps on their end in their browser)
It's actually pretty impressive, if you're in the same country as the streaming machine then the input latency is basically undetectable. And it's extremely tolerable if you're streaming long distance to another country as long as you're both on wired internet connections.

I use it for simulating controller-passing with my faraway friends since I miss the days of sharing singleplayer games on a couch. Both the host machine and the "viewing" machine can play. It spazzes out if you both try to move at the same time though.

I'm sure a similar thing must exist for AMD? Or even a third party option by now. This has been out for over a year for Nvidia.
>>
>>54033543
Some regions have much higher prices than others, check more listings, if they don't get much cheaper, buy the T510 in good condition.
>>
>>54033543
It might be worth ordering one from abroad and having it shipped to you, as long as the seller packages it carefully.

Still fucking about

It's obviously less performance than my desktop but still far better than integrated.

I set express card speed to 'generation 1' instead of automatic, though i dont know if I needed to, i'll test both.

I've had a black screen, where the video crashes and windows 7 makes that disconnected device sound, which lasts some 10 seconds before it reconnects. Not sure how to fix it but I'll look into it.

I've heard about optimus 1 and 1.1 and 1.2, but I think those are only for internal display which I don't use

Then there's something about voltages and BIOS versions, so maybe I can make it run faster than before.

In terms of benchmarks which I'll do later, I'm only really going to try out games I regularly play, and maybe in a few days try real benchmarking tools.

Overall as you'd expect it feels faster than just the X220 but slower than a desktop. There are some weird discrepancies like drops from 200fps down to 45fps for a few seconds in TF2, and steam's library screen tearing when scrolling. It'll be interesting trying PS2 emulators as that uses the CPU a lot.

Is there any way to work out whether I have the TN screen or the IPS screen on my new X220?

I'm looking to add a USB 3.0 Express Card (34mm or 54mm) to my X220 but having trouble finding one that will actually work. Most of the ones I keep finding either don't have enough power to transfer files or the drivers don't work or this or that doesn't work.

Is there a single one that actually works thats a reasonable price?
>>
>>54035352
Not that Anon, but my colors only alter if I look at the screen from a pretty high bottom or top angle, but there is no distortion when viewing from the sides at any position. What's that sound like to you?

IPS

/ic/ here, any good laptops with digitizers? The only other requirements are a decent CPU, GREAT screen and <$1100

SP3/4, and SB I'm not liking so much because of the keyboards, price and Microdick.
Not sure what the opinion on the TP Yogas' is, are they good? Will they last? How much is a reasonable price for one?
Dell's product range is a grade-A fucking mess, I can't figure out the digitized from the normal convertibles

Not sure if one can get a ChinkPad Yoga for that cheap

But anyway, starting at the bottom of the barrel. Depends on the definition of "great." The X200 and X201 tablets had pretty nice panels (unless you're really unlucky and get one of the PVA ones instead of IPS or AFFS), albeit low in resolution (1280*800) by today's mark. The latter runs 1st gen Core ix processors
Or there's the X220t and X230t with standard voltage Sandy and Ivy vag processors respectively. All IPS panel, 1366*768 aids. BUT the digitiser accuracy is poor. Tends to be all sorts of shit around the edges, especially the bottom one

As for dell, I haven't paid attention past the XT3 but you might want to give that a look

Or consider the Fujitsu T904, T935 or something. Unless those are too fancy

>>54035210
Oh so tempting to burn money on whatever it is if it ever comes out. But I'm a broke student nowadays. Going to use the X220t until it dies, and then fix it up so it keeps working until it becomes unusable due to content being out of its range

thinking of getting t420 on Amazon
anywyas, what is replaceable within it?
are healthy batteries abundant?

>>

Fuck yea we could design an 18 cell battery and revolutionize the industry!
>>
>>54044158
as long as you look for genuine low-cycle batteries you're fine. Chinese batteries are shit.
Also when you get your ThinkPad don't forget to check if the supplied battery is elefible for replacement, you can get a free new battery if it is.

Thats what they told steve jobs and look at him now
>>
>>54044187
How does that work? Do you have to be the original owner? All my thinkpads are used.

can anybody who's bought refurbished tp from amazon tell me the quality of the tp
does it have scratches
was it dirty, etc

ThinkPad warranties don't require a proof of ownership since they're tied to the machine. And as for the battery replacement, it only requires to enter the battery S/N to check if it's part of the recall:

While it's a step in the right direction there are still non free components in it. Then there is cancer like Librem that practices false advertising

What is a good upgrade from a t420?
>>
>>54044689
Another T420.

Sorry to be bothering y'all Thinkniggas again. But i just can't make up my mind between a ThinkPad Yoga with 4 gigs of ram and a x240 with 8. Both with pretty much the same price. I can't question the x240's reliability but I'm lusting after that pen and wacom digitizer.
