If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Been kinda poking around trying to find an answer. Guess i'll just ask here too.

My e6440 came with a wdc blue 1tb, the4 model number is WD10JPVX.

I am guessing the firmware has been fucked with because according to Western digital, the serial number is invalid, and rather than report a buffer size in crystal disk info, its showing total host reads and writes like an ssd would. This model isn't even an sshd model, so why would it even report a number like that? Is the smart data just fucked? Is it even safe to use?

hi neighbour,

no idea what are the usual prices in your proud country, but here down south, in the land that sings, we have identically specced ( 2520M / 320 / 4 / mobile broadband ) non-IPS X220's available around 180eur all the time, yet the T420's somehow are a bit pricier

from my perspective what you've found is a pretty deal, but if you, by any chance, want the smaller fella and are struggling to find it locally for a good bargain, come over then, we have plenty here

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X230

The X230 is the predecessor to the X220, it is one generation newer. However both were offered with multiple CPU options, obviously a more powerful CPU from the previous generation would be rated better than a less powerful CPU from a newer generation. There was not much performance gain from Sandy Bridge (2nd generation Core-i) to Ivy Bridge (3rd generation Core-i) Intel CPU's.

Looking for a small (12" max) Thinkpad for travelling. Doesn't have to be the fastest, will only be using it for light browsing and a bit of word processing. Thought about an x100e/x120e but I've heard mixed things about them, especially the processors & build quality (whatever I end up getting is going to be thrown into a backpack and tossed around repeatedly).

What would you guys recommend
>>
>>54009358
I have my X100e with me right here, and there is definitely a reason I'm on my X220 right now.

The AMD CPU is incredibly terrible. It overheats easily, requires an underclock in order for the battery to last six hours of word processing, and even after underclocking, still runs at about 85C. It's not an issue of being too dusty or any other excuse anyone can think of. I've taken it apart, cleaned it every which way, and it will not run proper.

Even the IPS screen on it is ass. It's definitely one of the cheapo panels, as it has worse viewing angles than my T430 with a 768p TN panel.

Do yourself a favor. Get at least an X201.

The largest differences between x220 and x230 are the keyboard as seen in >>54008485 and the Ivy Bridge architecture.

The x220 keyboard layout is obviously superior and I'm very disappointed at Lenovo for messing up the top right box and dropping back and forward keys. Still I must say that after using both x220 and x230 I've ended up preferring x230 for how typing actually feels. The pressure to trigger keys is just right for me and I feel no ambiguity about whether I'm pressing a key enough.

With x220 I felt that the pressure to trigger keystroke collapsed very slightly before the keystroke got triggered and I ended up having to care about not getting keystrokes swapped. I doubt you will notice much of a difference unless you are a veteran touch typist.

Ivy Bridge on the other hand is very nice to have since back then Intel really started to get gains in their graphics hardware. For Linux drivers most of the stuff that Haswell gets will also get Ivy Bridge support. Sandy Bridge on the other hand doesn't seem worth future support. The CPU isn't much of a difference other than lower power usage on Ivy.

>>54008651
They are very much similar in regards of WAN, RAM, SSD and mSATA support and maintenance.

Didn't get the FRUs but it is swappable for this unit.

Feels kind of weird, dunno how long it will last, but it was a bit tough when first putting them in, I had to press hard on the three keys as I couldn't middle scroll well.

This was 50 bucks. Good score? 1.3ghz E300 sucks
What's that comparable to? A fucking c2d? If so, which one? Windows 10 doesn't run bad although I got the fucking auto repair loop of death and had to fucking get rid of it fuck maybe have to downgrade to 8.1 maybe that will work better.

I'm really loving the clitmouse I missed that when I had a r51 think pad. It broke after two weeks when I spilled water on it. I was a fucking teen back then so that excuses it somewhat.

People always gonna try to justify purchasing an objectively inferior machine. Fact of the matter is, the size difference between T420 and T520 is insignificant at best - they both weigh above 2kg, and the T520 only weighs 300g more than T420.
Meanwhile with the T520, you get a machine that is actually built for quadcore CPUs and will happily run with desktop-like temperatures while being quiet as fuck.

That is a great price senpai, jealous as I paid about 300 USD for mine. These things are more expensive here than in the US, unfortunately.

so i just got my first thinkpad t420 for a 120 bucks and it comes installed with windows 7 already. going to run malware bytes and ccleaner to make sure their isn't anything malicious but would it make more sense to just reinstall windows?
>>
>>54021365
yeah if you have a license lying around. the registery can't ever be really cleaned unless you reinstall. or revert to a very early recovery.

Question for you guys. I recently acquired a x201s. The chassis and lid were in poor condition so I replaced them. After I swapped the mobo into the new replacement chassis I get invalid model and serial numbers on bootup. Is there anyway to reset this or fix it? Will a BIOS update help?
>>
>t420 has a fingerprint scanner and LED light near camera for night time typing
Holy fuck this is utilitarian as shit and only costed $160? Why didn't I buy one before?
>>
>>54021658
Where did you buy replacement parts? I'm looking at ebay, but the prices are retarded.
>>
>>54021658
Flash the custom bios without the whitelist.
>>
Should I buy a knock off replacement 9 cell battery for my x220? What are the risks?

UK lad here. Bought a T420 for £165, about $235. Specs are in pic related, did I get skanked? Came with original 9 cell battery and 500GB HDD

Please respond ;_;

I saw a 4GB, i5 2.5GHz, 250GB SSD go for £120 yesterday and your specs look better. What storage did you get?
Where did you get it from?
>>
>>54006726

stupid questions thread gave me zero serious answers so I am asking here since there is no regular laptop general. don't give a shit if it's a think pad or not as long as it suits my needs and doesn't come with bios level rootkits and shit.

> A bluray drive w/ software

> Preferably the kind that bend over like pic related. The ones that detatch from the keyboard are retarded

I don't have any restrictions on budget but I don't want to buy anything with features I won't need( ie: leet gyman laptop)

>>54022510
storage was 500gb hard drive mentioned in my post, and from gumtree.
>>
>>54022213

Not too bad, not brilliant, but I wouldn;t say you were ripped off.
>>
>>54022825
cheers lad, condition is fantastic except for some keyboard shine
>>
>>54022042
Why would it even trip the hardware check? I didn't replace any hardware, just a direct swap.
>>
>>54022546
is the symbol for stand mode and laptop mode swapped?
>>
>>54023012
I have no idea, it really shouldn't. That's how to fix it though.
>>
>>54022289
x200s, x201s, and x201i have the same chassis fru number. Just buy the cheapest one that comes up.
>>
>>54023031
looks like it
>>
>>54023053
Just trawl ebay for a deal, then? Shit.
>>
So come Friday I'm either going with the t420 or the t520. Is the full HD screen on the 520 decent? Are the colors and viewing angles and brightness acceptable? Is the size & weight difference actually noticeable?
>>
Buying a laptop for school and need help purchasing one. My budget is around $500 and I'm down to blow all of it. What is the best laptop I can get. I understand the t420 and others are amazing for their price but I'm skeptical.

If a t420 or t520 is the truly the best for the price I'm down to pay for it.

I just installed a 2820QM in my T520. What sort of idle temps should I be getting? Speccy is reading 60-65C, which seems pretty high seeing as I just applied thermal paste.
>>
>>54022206
Smaller than advertised capacity, probably no warranty. I bought the real 9 cell and its great, even with the bit it sticks out. Just be careful and you're fine
>>
>>54023414
>>54023139
I bought my t420 for $160 from Craigslist. Core i5, 8gb of RAM, but I DID have to get a new battery and I'll probably get the recovery disks from lenovo. All in all, worth it. I'll probably use the optical drive as a secondary drive bay to store movies and TV shows
>>
>>54018642
Any wallpapers like that but for other models, say, the x220?
>>
>>54020934
>>54021031
So it sounds like the t520 is the one for me but what about te w520? Around me on Craigslist the price difference is almost non existent. Let me know thanks
