I shudder at the thought of having to talk to DR8C0, but he knows of a place where you can get them custom made to say what you want and much higher quality than the chink shit you've got. I think his plan (which fell through) was to have the UID go to his Tumblr.

>>
>>53937650
Looking through them right now. It's so tempting to get a cadet keyset even though I don't even write Lisp. I just really like it.

>>53937755

>>
>>53937536
The first switch didn't work, which I tested extensively and opened. The second one doesn't register either, so I guess there's a defect on the PCB. What do you mean with tracks?
>>
>>53937869
It sounds like you're approaching debugging all wrong. Do you have a multimeter? Check all the tracks on the PCB that connect the specific switch. If the issue is here then it's generally very easy to fix. If you somehow managed to short a track (how the fuck would you do this though?) then the pin on the chip is probably borked. If you find this to be the case then there are a few options but they're all a lot more work.
>>
Just killed my cherry mx red keyboard with some coffee.
what should i do with it?
>>
>>53937948
define "killed"
>>
>>53937925
I see. I'm not the best electrical engineer out there - I had a switch not work before and just exchanged it so it worked again, that's why I tried it with this one as well. The PCB tracks look alright, how would I go about testing with a multimeter? I have one here.
>>
>>53937787
I doubt more than two of the people getting space cadet caps use lisp.
>>
>>53938029
What, are you saying there aren't a ton of people in the MK community who need to type Cyrillic or Hangul?
>>
>>53938021
turn the meter to measure resistance, pretty much any range will do. place one pin on the pad where the switch should be and the other pin on the leg of the chip where that track should run to. if the resistance is zero then you're good to go (the track is okay), if the resistance shows 1 (or infinity, depends on your meter), then the track is broken. repeat on the other side. if you mess up what pad runs to what leg you will also see the meter show either infinity or a large value.
you can check your switch in the same manner, put the meter pins on the switch legs, measure resistance when the switch is not pressed and when it's pressed.
>>
>>53938067
what does that have to do with using lisp? do you know what lisp is, anon?
>>
>>53938100
Right on, going to try this tommorow. Appreciate your help.

What keyboard would you recommend as someone's first mechanical?

I have to buy a keyboard and after some time seeing this threads and admiring how some of your mechanical keyboards look I'd like to get my first one.

As a programmer I think I'll enjoy the difference, but beyond being mechanical I don't need anything fancy. Just an intro keyboard.

What would you recommend for a starter?

>Budget
Ideally 70€ max. If that's too tight please suggest what's the cheapest 'decent' (as in something that I won't immediately regret buying) keyboard that you can come up with.

yes, but you need to check which pin is which, you can do this easily with a multimeter.

My dad has one. What would I be looking for in this case when using one? I mean, what tells me it's the right cable?

I actually just cut the wire up and it has 5 cables with the same colors as the ones in the cable I posted I think it's safe to assume the colors will match, right? lol
>>
>>53940310
if your dad one he can probably teach you how.

anywho, break the cables apart and clean their ends so you can measure them nicely. switch to resistance and put on measure pin on a cable and then use the other measure pin on the usb pins to find which one is connected to it. if there's a connection, the resistance will be 0, otherwise infinite.

My QFR has been good for years. I didn't even clean it for like 2 years then did two switch swaps on it later and here we are. Still great. It's still my #1 choice for a new cheap keyboard. If you're lucky you can get 'em for like $65. Cheap keycaps and rubber coating are the only downsides IMO.

Only thing to keep in mind is that it has the American layout, and that you'll have to get used to it. Shipping is free.

Magicforce - Cherry MX Greens.jpg
29 KB, 757x505
I bought a MagicForce. This board usually comes with OUTEMU mechanical switches for $40. But when I found a version of this keyboard with Cherry MX Greens for only $89, buying it was an easy decision.

I wanted a 60% keyboard. I was considering the Pok3r with Cherry MX Blue switches for $129, but I eventually decided that I couldn't do without dedicated arrow keys. For the price, I was expecting the MagicForce to be lower quality than what I've received and I'm pleasantly surprised by this keyboard. I think that it's a hidden gem. Will definitely have to replace the keycaps, but I was likely going to do that regardless of what board I purchased.
>>
>>53948254
Not as fan of the font and the windows keys are fucking disgusting.
I've heard great things about the keyboards though
>>
>>53945000
Cherry MX Board 3.0 with wrist rest - 80 bucks
Ducky Shine 4 + Aftermarket caps (and shipping and customs) - 300 bucks
HHKB - 220 bucks
AEK II build project - 30 bucks
Magicforce - 50 bucks
240 Gaterons - 66 bucks or so
Teensy + other stuff for handwiring magicforce - 30 bucks

So about 770 bucks.

I do. It's a sturdy keyboard. Very little flex when I twist it. Everything works.

The only thing I don't like about it is the light blue backlighting, but I turned that off by holding down the fn key and clicking the down arrow several times.

I have a model M that's working just fine, in fact I'm using it to type this
BUT
every time I turn on my PC for the first time every day the keyboard never works, it only starts registering after a reboot

I restart the PC and it works perfectly.
the connector is PS2

Is it an AT connector version? Most PS2 ports don't put out enough power for those, you need something like http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY-PS2-Keyboard-USB-Adapter/dp/B000BSJFJS to supply more.

>>
>>53950092

There might be just barely enough at first. If it shares a bus with other ports, anything could cause it to drop, but you're most likely undervolting it either way.

PS2 isn't plug and play, so it takes a restart to see it again. That adapter will definitely solve your issue.
>>
>>53950062
>>53950113
Which is why you get custom keycaps after the fact. However, that's gonna be a bit of a pickle since the right side of the bottom row, as well as the shift are non-standard sizes. Not impossible to find sets that would fit, but it's not as easy as regular layouts. Going with blank keycaps obviously makes it easier.
>>
>>53950176
I'd get blanks in a heartbeat, but the weird layout made me just accept that I'll be stuck with the same shitty edgy keycaps forever.

The perfect solution would be to get a blank 88-key WASD keyboard, but even the MK84 is pretty expensive for a keyboard for me.
>>
>>53936932
>you will never get your third mechanical keyboard cause it has to be the last one you get and you might aswell get a k type
>>
>>53950280
If you go for blanks you have loads of options. Just go for a set with full 104 keys, then you'll have plenty of spare keycaps from the keypad, arrow keys, and such. Then literally the only keycap you need to worry about is the off-size right Shift, but many blank keysets come with extra keys that could fit that. Just search for something that has blank keys and a 1.5u shift
>>
>>53950391
>>53950280
Scrap that, it looks like it's a 1.75u keycap, not 1.5, so search for that instead
>>
>>53950280
And after a bit of searching, this set has a 1.75u shift that will fit your board, if you don't mind the colors.
http://www.amazon.com/Vortex-Double-Shot-Mechanical-Keyboard-Keycaps/dp/B013KPX9E0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1460213719&sr=8-2&keywords=pbt+keycap+vortex

There do exist some keycap sets on massdrop and elsewhere with high quality plastic and transparent legends though.

Most people don't realize that mechanical keyboards is a very niche business once you venture from the gamer market. If you ask for something it's sometimes not available right now.
Products appear and disappear in the blink of an eye. Good stuff becomes sold out, shops close and group buys end.
Thankfully the cycle will start over with a product similar to whatever was missed popping up within 2-3 months. All you have to do is discover good sources for news and products and monitor them.

TL;DR: LURK MOAR
