I've finally decided on my new watch.

Nav B-Uhr 44 Vintage TITANIUM A-Type
Or
Nav B-Uhr 44 Automatic A-Type

I like the sterile dial of the titanium, but I also like the lume of the regular which has a steinhart logo on it. Steinhart also offers the most value for the money with an ETA 2824-2 compared to Laco and others with their base miyota 821a at the same price point. Just have to decide between the two. Opinions?

I think that honor still goes to the Rolex Submariner. It's a really nice watch but the degree to which it's been meme'd is wildly disproportionate to it's place in the industry.

The SKX meme is literally just a side effect.

I disagree. The Submariner has good qualities to match up with the price.

How about the entire vintage rolex market? As I type this out I'm just opening up some action sites to take a look at a recent or coming auctions.. I bet we can find some well-worn steel pre-daytona or something else for well into the 6 figure range. give me a sec.

This is an excellent point, but it's generally true of anything with an in-house movement.

Sometimes even just a high-status case containing a common movement.

That's a Daytona, not a Sub...

I take your point though. Value retention is certainly a valid reason to buy a Rolex and the Submariner is an excellent choice in that regard.

>>53938148
Or like 700 gallons of gas.

But there has been a price increase in Rolex even when accounting for inflation. But there's also been a significant upgrade to the quality of their watches. I'm sure we can all guess there's been an upgrade to the premium you pay, but that premium increase does not account for all of the price as some may occasionally suggest.

The fact that you think the examples of vintage watch prices have anything to do with the argument against the submariner not being 'the most overrated watch' just shows that you didn't understand the argument in the first place.

What is your ultimate one-watch watch? Let's start at 1k, 5k, 10k then unlimited budget.

No bullshit copout answers like buying a more expensive watch, selling it then buying multiple watches.

Serious question:

How do you guys wash your hands while wearing watches?
>>
>>53941181
Throw enough money at it and you can get a bespoke watch with anything any everything you desire.

But why only have one watch? Seems like a quaint idea but boring in practice.
>>
>>53941284
Yes. But I don't wash the watch

>>

Normally. Haven't had a watch on leather so I don't know if I'd wash any differently.
>>
>>53941181

Doesn't really work.

Most any watch that is appropriate with formal attire is too prissy/boring for casual wear. You can try to channel Bond but people will be rolling their eyes at you when you're not looking, and rightly so.

>>
>>53941301
>>53941617
Please, elaborate on the Habring. Why would anyone go for it instead for an equivalently priced Swiss alternative?
>>
>>53943030
Well, for me, is about the passion and business model invest in the watches. I once visited Habring manufacture with a few friends and I found it to be a cool, independent wathmaker with a unique vision regarding his creations. Also, Habring is the kind of brand that will offer a far bigger punch for the same money, if you know how to understand their movements.

See, take a look at this article and you'll get me:

http://www.ablogtowatch.com/habring2-sustainable-watch-making/
>>
>>53941617
Thanks

>>53943030
Well, what's the real alternative? It's a fairly unique thing. I can't think of a watch that does all that it does, and does it in such a simple and understated way like this. It has running seconds, minutes and hours, along with chronograph seconds and minutes. It doesn't have any extra holes in the case, because it doesn't even have a single pusher, it operates the chrono via the crown. And it does it in a way that retains the advantage of modern dual-pusher chronos. No one else is doing it, even though it just makes so much sense once you use it.

And it's kind of fun to own such a limited piece, you know? It's not "limited edition," right. But consider this, my GS is limited to only 200 pieces, but it takes Habring 4 years just to make 4 watches (they make 50 a year.) And that's across all their models, not just the COS chrono. There's not many Habrings out there, only some are like this, and no one else is making a watch quite like this either.
>>
>>53943251
>4 years just to make 4 watches
Obviously that's suppose to be "4 years just to make 200 watches."

It seems that you kinda of hit the controversial point among some collectors regarding Habring2.

The caliber's designs are quite creative and intelligent, but the finishing, although well done, is really simple, as it lacks of almost all kind of decoration. See pic related.

Some like this austere look, and some don't. I myself like the sober finishing and feel it goes well with their ideology, but I've heard of some buyers prefering the metal caseback in order to concel their movements. Sad.

>>53944027
There are some other extremely complex chronos out there that don't sell for more than 20k (although not as low as 6k) Zenith, JLC, GO to name a few.
>>
>>53943251
I assumed they would have increased their production by now. Keeping the score at fifty pieces per year will eventually bankrupt them. Where did you found this info NineBalls? Is it recent?

If they have ramped up, they haven't updated their website. Their website they make about 1 per week, limited at up to 12 units of a single model per year.

>>53944084
>>53944766
In regards to finishing, it's not anything special. I don't have any problem with it, and I certainly don't feel any need to 'conceal' it with a solid caseback instead. But maybe that's partly because I'm so willing to show someone the inside of a watch, any watch, if they express interest in mechanical watches. Hell, I'll sketch out escapement components on a napkin if they're actually interested, and I can't hardly draw a straight line. Solid casebacks inhibit my ability to share the watch mechanisms with other people.

I could take pictures at some point.
>>
>>53944916
I hope they simply haven't updated their website, since I'd like to have Habring for many more years and get to see further innovation in their calibers.

>>
>>53945069
Books are really great teaching instruments, but also very expensive and not always easy to find or sometimes not updated. I do own a fairly large watch-related shelf on my bibliotheque but I keep coming to the web for greater detailed knowledge.

You shold start with other watch forums or websites. I daily visit at least a couple of the following:

watchprosite
watchyouseek
hodinkee
ablogtowatch
watchtime
revolution
underthedial

I eventually started taking watchmaker classes but only recently.
>>
>>53945252
Others I visit quite often:
relogios e relogios
quill & pad
tiempo de relojes
le point montres
equation du temps
In case you speak french, spanish or portuguese.

Cheers!
>>
>>53944766
I get that the habring split second chrono is much cheaper than others, but what makes this cheaper than alternatives? The movement being so small?
>>
>>53944969
>He, I do the very same thing m8
The best part is when you walk them thru the escapement, they start to understand the components, but then you actually show it to them. When they get to see how small the pallet fork is, and the pallet jewels. It's all just so impossibly tiny.
>>

One of the aspects is the cleverly design movement. Easy to make, somewhat simple to asamble, not difficult to service. Second aspect is the lack of decor in the finishing and third, affordable material and techniques. You could probably wonder why other companys bother with the last two then. The simple reason is time. Better finishing, materials and techiniques is what separates good watches from those that will survive you in pretty decent state.

Asambling and service calibers is a big expensive issue inside the industry. For example, in the case of my Lange the fact that the movement is closed with a 3/4 platine forces young watchmakers to add several hours of training in order to properly "drop" the piece without damaging any part or missign any shaft. When servicing the timekeeper, the professional watchmaker will spend more time and effort doing the same thing and costs ranks up. A chronograph is a servicing nightmare most of the times and some companys, like Moser or PP even re-design their movements to allow module construction the difficuties of servicing complex escapements.

However, as I stated there are several other expenses behind the price of a watch.

It doesn't say Grand Seiko anywhere, does it? Marinemaster is a separate line of high end divers, it includes the MM300 and most of the Tuna models.

The movement in that MM300 is an 8L35 which is an automatic movement very closely related to the 9S line of movements which are the ones used in automatic GS watches. However, the 8L is less decorated and is not regulated to GS standard and is not really certified to meet any standard besides the usual basic manufacturer accuracy specification.

Get a dark brown lorica strap for it.

Is there a version of this without the fisher price tier glow in the dark minute / hour hands?
>>
Anyone else frustrated by Grand Seiko?

>best finishing in their price ranges by a mile
>top in-house movements, Spring Drive
>complete vertical integration with manufacturing methods more akin to haute horologie manufactories
>yet, fucking awful Rolex-tier text and redundancy, aesthetically uninspiring though well-finished faces + movements

Their limited-edition, long-sold-out 130th Anniversary manual-wind dress watch is IMO the best-looking watch ever though.

No probs, I actually ordered the same watch from that same site a couple days ago, will probably spend another 20bucks in a bunch of canvas nato.

About the leather, unless you dress hard, a colored nato which goes with your outfit looks better imo, and you can get like 3 straps for 15 bucks so you have multiple colors to choose from

I'm not really dressy, and having multiple color options sounds good.

Where are you buying the straps from?

I've actually tried sending a PM to Celadon via Facebook last night to consult prices with them.

Am hoping to order the cream dial with anodised blue hands.

I'm looking for casual watch. I love the look of explorer. Longines conquest is fine too, but it's out if my budget. I also have bitchwrist to make my choice harder,

The SRP703 should be close to what you're asking.

>>53948584
Consider the SDGM001, the SARX015 or the aforementioned SRP703 if you're feeling cheap.

Have you ever come across a digital watch you would wear/want to own?
