IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Can somebody explain me better full voltage vs low voltage?
Seems like *30 are the latest full voltage CPUs and are still very fast even compared to new CPUs. Is this true?
T430/X230 are literally the best price/performance if you don't mind the 6 row chiclet keyboard.
*40 are a fucking downgrade though.
>>
>>53683723
irrelevant cost/eff shit. That's the main reason the **2* series is still the recommended one around here.

Sandy's still going stronk
>>
>>53683723
Old low voltage CPU's are poo, Haswell/Skylake are fine though.

They typically have boost clocks to compete with their full-voltage counterparts, but the cooling systems designed around them are not designed to continually run at the full boost speed. So you will probably experience thermal throttling and the core clock lowering back down.

It mostly comes down to the cooling, basically they aren't meant for hours of gaming or rendering or compiling things. Unless the cooling system can keep up. In which case it would be weird for that laptop to have a low voltage CPU yet be big enough for a cooling system that good.

Fug, I can't find the article now. It's not hard to see that they've been stonewalled since Sandy Bridge though. Ivy Bridge and Haswell were minor upgrades, Broadwell did literally nothing for performance, and Skylake is merely on par with Haswell, sometimes actually benching worse. Either they know they don't have to improve performance because AMD is too far behind to be real competition, or they actually can't squeeze anything more out of silicon, or both. The current software trend towards even lower voltage phone/tablet processors that barely even match Core 2 for performance means Sandy Bridge will still be good for years to come.

Most people hate them.

Chiclet keys only caught on because they make it easier to build thinner laptops compared to conventional keys and since we have long past hit the point of diminishing returns on hardware laptops have to have some new feature to catch the attention of normies so they'll buy whatever Apple/Acer/Dell/HP/Lenovo are shitting out instead of a $99 tablet instead.

Also they're popular because the Macbook had them so they became trendy.

The chiclet keyboard on my ThinkPad is easily the best thing I've ever typed on. It even beats the Mac's keyboard because the chiclet keys on a Mac don't hug your fingertips for a start, then there's the travel and the tactile feel and the lack of flex. It blows everything out the water.

I think all that's happening is that everyone is rightfully pissed at Lenovo for ruining the ThinkPad with new shit, the keyboard though happens to be the only new thing which is an improvement, it just unfortunately gets lumped together with the other hate.

I'm using an E130, I know its an Edge series but its literally an old x121e with better internals. I think this is the best ThinkPad they made, for me anyway. I find it hard to fault other than the screen.

3rd gen i3, USB 3.0 upgraded to 8GB RAM and I've got an mSATA SSD on the way for it so it can keep the stock 500GB HDD. For a laptop from like 2012 its remarkably powerful.

I gues /sqt/ wants me to post this question here.

I just got Thinkpad T400. I bought an HDD for it. When I run the HDD diagnostics utility in the BIOS, I get "Error Code: 0000 Read Verification Failed". I decided to install Windows 7 and it installed and seems to work fine, but I still get the error. I ran chkdsk from the CD after installing and it doesn't find any problems.

So, what's going on here? Should I return the HDD or what?
>>
>>53691306
Weird, even though it works, the drive could be on it's way out the door, the original drive in my optiplex works, but it's getting slower and has errors, can't get too mad, it's from 2007.
>>
>>53691338

Ah...So maybe returning it is my best bet? Is there maybe a BIOS option that might affect the test?
>>
>>53691461
Returning it is only good if you intend to run a mechanical drive and don't feel like an SSD, but if the laptop is in good condition and it would otherwise work for you, buy a 128GB SSD and enjoy the speed, Core 2 duo is really something with an SSD.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyQ9KbU4d0w
>>
>>53691306

A 120GB SSD is $40, a 240GB SSD is $55

Unless you need a lot of space there is no reason to be using a mechanical hard drive. I threw a cheap PNY 120GB SSD in my T400 and it boots in seconds now, and runs much smoother.

Also, as a side note, Windows 7 is the newest OS you can use and still use switchable graphics to go from the integrated GPU to the 3470 because Lenovo didn't feel like writing drivers for Windows 8/Windows 10 so with any OS past 7 you'll have to manually switch your GPU in the BIOS.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

What OSs should I put on it?
Comes with an W8 licence, upgraded to 7. I would like to keep a small windows partition, because of >muh games and >muh professional software, but I mainly wanna work in linux.
But from what I have read, UEFI seems to make duelbooting a pain in the ass.
Also, all big linux distros are ass too. It's either gnome, which is shit, or KDE, which with 5, now after 4 became stable and usable is shit again, or some random 1337-WM, wich is a lot of work to get running.
And RHEL7 clones seem really nice, because they got a working version of KDE4 and support till the end of time, but rpm-fusion is dead, so I either have to add random hobbiest repos, that'll do whatever they want and have a huge security and stability issue, or I install every fucking thing from source, at which point I might as well install gentoo.

Guys, I dont get that "chicklet keyboard" meme.
What is it all about? Well, old keyboards and the new ones have the same rubber-dome base with scissor-spring. Nothing special, all laptops have these for 20 years already. Keycap shape? Maybe, some say, gaybook keyboard is pleasant to type too, thats a matter of habit.

So, whats the point besides 6 rows, touch panels and non-tactile powerbutton?

Just bought a XPS 13, after getting all my programs just how I like them and deleting dell bloatware it seems the consensus (by which I mean about 2 sources) is that a clean install is better to clear up ram usage.

I don't really wanna go to the hassle of reinstalling all those programs again; is it worth it? I've done the USB windows install thing on a desktop before (including the issue of it not booting from my USB for whatever reason, resorting to buying discs, those discs failing then buying different discs for it to work, those were hellish times) but i'm too lazy to go through with that again unless it's really worth.
>>
>>53693464
The main complaint about the 'chiclet keyboard' is due to the switch from the excellent 7 row layout to the objectively worse 6 tow layout.

Keycap design and keyboard feel are better in the new keyboard as well.
>>
>>53693464

While I do prefer the retro key shape, the new one doesn't bother me. For me the dealbreaker is the 6 rows. Not having the ins/del/home/end/pgup/pgdn in the classic arrangement is the difference between using a laptop, and using a portable computer.

I disagree with your sentiments.
Yes, technically speaking Linux refers only to the operating system's kernel. Although the GNU project predates the Linux kernel, and the project's contributors do deserve recognition, placing them in the name is unfair to the many, many others who made significant contributions. Beside, "Linux/GNU" would be more technically accurate since the kernel boots first. In popular usage, “Linux” refers to the kernel and all the other free and open
source software found in the typical Linux distribution; that is, the entire Linux ecosystem, not just the GNU components. The operating system marketplace seems to prefer one-word names such as DOS, Windows, Solaris, Irix, AIX. Therefore just 'Linux' makes it much more accessible and sensical. Thanks

It's kind of hard to upgrade the X220 screen because the LVDS connecter can't into FullHD.

I already own a T430 and overall like thinkpad builds. Despite using a 9-cell battery, I'm not enjoying the 3.5 hour battery life with normal usage. I want to run Excel or a VM for a full working day regardless of price. T460 may do it but I've got no idea if it's any actual improvement over the T430.

The amount of bloat a Thinkpad comes with these days is ridiculous.

The Lenovo Thinkpad Reading Optimizer is a very powerful and highly valued tool for people who read on laptops.

Why?

Because if youre a fucking idiot, all you have to do is install this. Then, whenever your computer is in landscape or portrait mode and you're too fucking stupid to rotate your screen, you can install this bloated tool to do it automatically. Don't use it 90% of the time? Don't worry, it'll still use up CPU even when you're not using it.

Fuck Lenovo for this. It doesn't matter if you can uninstall a piece of crap, it still matters that the crap was in this laptop in the first place. I seriously can't have the ultimate support of Lenovo because of this. At this point the Thinkpad exists as a culture and name and design only, and the soul is gone.

just wanted to share what i did to get it working just in case anyone has a similar problem.

i disconnected the cmos battery and let everything discharge overnight, plugged it back in this morning, and after sputtering a few times like an old jalopy, i finally got it to boot. it was really fucky (keyboard and mouse input was all over the place) for a while and wouldn't consistently boot, but strangely enough, throughout the day, it's gotten a lot more stable, i've managed to work out most of the input issues, and it seems mostly fine

ultimately, i'll probably return it for a replacement anyway since i'm concerned there's some underlying hardware fuckery (which i fucking HATE to do because i've fallen in love with it the short time i've had it, seriously, holy fuck i understand now why you guys adore these things so much, trackpoint especially is not a meme), but thanks to everyone that tried to help out

After that's said and done, should I just sit back and forget that Lenovo is still shoving bloatware in their laptops and creating poor products? I'm not going to like the company just because I can wipe my laptop's unclean asshole after I buy it.

This is the mentality a lot of people here seem to have, and it seems to perpetuate this phenomenon.. if you're going to justify bloatware by saying you can remove it, then they are free to do it. Especially after you continue to praise the company.

Bloatware is the least of Lenovo's problems. They used to have legit spyware preloaded onto your computer (Superfish). After Superfish was removed and they were like "woops our bad", they waited a couple years and bundled another piece of shit spyware with their newer systems, although I forget what that one is called.

But aside from that, I find that Thinkpads are the lesser evil - since pretty much every manufacturer has similar problems or are overpriced.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-UltraNav-PS2-Spanish-Travel-Keyboard-NEW-42C0046-/331649977361?hash=item4d37e10c11:g:DJkAAOSwuTxV7619

but it's a spanish keyboard. That's not going to cause any trouble for me is it? A shame the Lshift is smaller for the extra key.

Shouldn't be a problem for that little plug n play thing.

Looks like a T40's keyboard, might be changeable if you can find one of those anymore...

Illuminated keys are a meme. 1 LED on top does the job better than 1 LED per key.

Does anyone know which model Thinkpad this is?

Someone needs to do an CSI zoomjob on the label. I think it says R51, but that doesnt make sense. also that clipped corner should be noticiable by someone.
also, the grey keys are i think pre-60 series.

More often than not, single colour laptop keyboard backlights are just 1 LED with some fibre. Cheaper that way
And to think there was also a time when a single white LED was so expensive that they used orange ones to cut costs on some models (although admittedly I'd want an orange Thinklight just for shits and giggles)

I know there's a few Dell Precision M4800 owners in /tpg/, if any of you guys has as FirePro M5100 someone released a modded vBIOS that allows you to OC the GPU.

Can ThinkPad X220 decode HDCD?
Lateralus album by Tool comes with HDCD. I'm pretty sure it showed a little HDCD icon on my mom's crappy laptop when I used it to rip the CD but it doesn't show on my X220

Forget. I'm retarded. I'm pretty sure I saw the HDCD icon when playing the CD itself and not the ripped 320kbps mp3 file

I got a new genuine 9 cell and I want it to last for a while.

What threshold settings should I use? I'm using TLP on Arch to configure stuff.

40 start and 80 stop, maybe?
