If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

The screen hinges are screwed to the magnesium lid, into which the rest of the screen hardware snaps in. The screen bezel holds the panel in a shock-absorbing foam mounting.

The hard drive is protected similarly, wrapped in thin plastic covered in foam blocks, with a SATA plug extending out of the case on a ribbon cable into a caddy that takes 5 screws (two on the top, even) to remove.

Panasonic supplies a driver to enable eco mode, which only charges the battery to 80%, letting you leave the T8 plugged in all the time as a terminal or carputer. There's also a built-in battery calibrator.

The power switch light and eco/charge lights also pulse softly in sleep mode or while charging, and you can set the charge indicator's pulse type in the BIOS, as well as syncing external lighting to the screen brightness.

I love the circular touchpad more every time I use it. Shit just makes sense.

That's interesting, so keeping the battery at a constant 80% does what exactly on a technical level?
>I love the circular touchpad more every time I use it.
It looks practical. Also really looks like shit imo. Function over form though. New models still ship with the circular touchpad

Fellow T420 owners, what are your settings for sysctl.conf by chance? I upgraded to 8gb of 1600Mhz RAM with an unlocked BIOS and I've been trying to maximize RAM usage to save power and gain speed. I've set my dirty_writeback_centisecs to 3000 and my dirty_ratio to 40, and I'm using profile-sync-daemon to move my browser profile and cache to RAM with overlayfs. I am 22 years old. How the fuck do you not know what an RJ-11 port is for? Are you serious? It doesn't matter if the majority of users don't use dial-up anymore. You should know what that port is for. If you said that you didn't know what it was to any IT professional you would be laughed at. It is extremely common knowledge and is included in the A+ test.
>>
>>53651161
Not that dumbass, but I don't see any use for an rj11 port on a laptop. Maybe a docking station.

This. The batteries also have thermal sensors that stop charging if they get too hot.

Also, trackpad orientation rotates with screen orientation, letting you use both the touchscreen and trackpad for navigation while holding it like a book.

Maybe the keys are wider than usual to make it easier to type sideways?
>>
>>53651208
Yes but it comes with a mic, and plenty of studio quality USB mics.
>>
>>53651193
That's not what I'm saying. I too, don't see any practical use for RJ-11 on a laptop anymore because almost all enterprises use VOIP now over RJ-45. My point is that if you don't know what RJ-11 is used for, you are either under the age of 10 or extremely ignorant.

Thinking of buying a T520/T530 to replace my old macbook, whose motherboard is failing.

Opinions?

From what i can tell, the only major difference between the 520 and the 530 is the stupid chiclet keyboard, which i dislike.

Should i save a little bit of money and get the T520, which is a little slower and older, but has a nicer keyboard?

I can find more 520's with the Nvidia graphics compared to the 530's.
>>
>>53656851
I'd get the T520, you could use the money saved to get something nice for it like an SSD.
>>
>>53656897

What about the W520?

I can get them for a similar price, and they're a little bit more powerful
>>
Bought a dock for my T420. Should i get a 90w adapter of will my 65w work just fine?
>>
>>53656905
Other than supporting really powerful 55w cpus and more powerful gpus, they are identical, and I'd only suggest getting one for serious workstation usage cause it will be a power using brick with a 55w chip in it.
>>
>>53656936
Hmm.

I think i'll go for the w520 then

I don't mind the potential for garbage battery life, and i'd certainly make good use of the more powerful GPU's as i do CAD work from time to time.

I'll keep an eye out for one with an i7, the 1080p screen and the 1000M cuadro.

Thanks!

Just finished putting my i7 2820qm into my T520 which originally had an i5.

Sorry to that dude who wanted pics, my phone had no battery and I was getting in the groove of things.

Installation was a pain but things still went smoothly, keyboard bezel was a bugger to get the off thanks to me forgetting the screw under the hard drive, with all my yanking I'm surprised I didn't break anything.

The thermal module was another tricky bastard to figure out, real pain to get free, also I had to cut the black tape where the thermal module contacts the CPU to accommodate the much longer i7.

That's all my whinging, now I'm less of an amateur if i was do do it again there would be way fewer headaches. Whole process took be 2 hours.

Temps have been pretty good knowing I got the base model heatsink (1 heatpipe), thermal paste I used was arctic ceramique. Running cpuz's stress test the hottest core got to 91c after 10 mins without hyperthreading. With hyperthreading I saw it go to 93 then I stopped the stress test. Idle temps are 6 degrees lower than the i5 (probably due to better thermal compound) Ambient temp was 26c.

Will post cpuz bench scores of both cpus.

your confused. you're putting a SATA 3 drive into a SATA 2 bus. it will revert to 3Gbps, which is fine, but IMO it's stupid to buy a premium ssd when you can get a sata 2 for less. you can get a crucial sata2 256 for like $60
>>
>>53658840
i know that the msata slot is a sata 2 bus, im buying a regular ssd for the hard drive caddy, which is sata3. the ultrabay is also sata3. im buying from amazon because i have $54 in gift card credit (and the thermal paste is an addon item so i need to spend $20 anyways to get it). i could get a crucial bx200 , but reading reviews on amazon and elsewhere, its $20 less because it its slower than the 850 would be.

multi touch works on my x220T, even on chrome and Photoshop,
but when using the photos app or just windows apps, the windows apps or the start menu get non responsive to touch input.

I'm starting to think it's windows.

A good way I replicated the issue was zooming in on photos in the photos app on the touchscreen.

I'm using what ever generic drivers that Windows 10 autoupdate gives me, since Lenovo doesn't officially support X220 T on Windows 10.

I wouldn't be surprised if Windows store apps are just gimped for some machines. It's like how OneDrive is so obnoxiously un-user friendly and doesn't let you choose how much bandwidth to use within the program.

Anyway, that's not the only thing that's broken with Windows 10 and the X220 Tablet - the top and bottom screen gestures don't work as they're supposed to (i.e. show the title bar when in full screen or show the task bar in full screen), although the left side screen gesture (app view) and right screen gesture (action center) works.

went to their website, but no windows 10 drivers for the hd 3000 with 2nd gen intel. There's a windows 10 driver for integrated graphics with intel N processors, but it won't work for the X220 tablet anyway.

the hd 3000 drivers on their website are the same version as the one windows 10 auto-update gave me, so no change there.

So long as you aren't using an Ivy bridge or anything newer laptop, you should be fine.
3rd party batteries work, 3rd party aC adapters are hot, shitty and noisy.

>>53647648
Not necessarily, the laptop might of had its hard drive pulled and destroyed, and because they aren't selling a hard drive it is less QC to deal with because people expect a 'good hard drive' to their definition.

I do buy laptops with hard drives that are wiped as they are sometimes priced the same as some without hdds.

If not hen the inverter went bad, it is right below the LCD when you open up the screen.

Hey /tpg/, I've been researching laptops and I want something that

-has the ability to run high definition video
-have many tabs open w/o lag, and other programs running in the background
-can run DAWS and autocad/modeling programs fairly easily
-good resolution screen
-very long battery life
-can be repaired easily
-will last 3~ years

Thinkpad comes to mind for easy repair and durability, and I find the newer models fit all my requirements. I'd considered the T430-T460, and I can get the T460 new for relatively cheap with a corporate code. But I'm nervous about purchasing because of how new it is and the lack of reviews.

Is it worth getting? Are there better options for my requirements at the $500-$1000 range?

Actually, it's the smaller, optical-drive-less variant. I rescued a pair from my local thrift shop.
I've been getting autistic for the past three threads over them, they are faster and more capable than you'd think from the specs, much lighter than they look, pack some quality hardware, and they look like something out of Gundam.
Oh yeah and they're tough as all hell. These things were bouncing around my local Goodwills at $100 for almost a year, and I think most people thought they were toys and treated them as such.
