so i've got verizon and im looking for a cheaper mid rangey phone

dont really have much interest in custom roms or anything like that, just want something with a decent battery life or at least replacable batteries

droid maxx 2 seems like it fits this bill, but a lot of older flagship stuff from 2014 are around the same price as well like the lg g3, galaxy s5, droid turbo 1, even the one m9

any advice on what to go with? i'm mostly leaning toward the droids because theyre close to stock android but it's not a huge deal

Hi, I have a 5-year-old Galaxy S3 (1 GB ver) that still works perfectly but about a year ago when Samsung pushed its final Touchwiz update for this model it began to lag uncontrollably. How do I go about flashing a new custom firmware for it, and which is the recommended one with the least bloat? Is it Cyanogenmod?

Any phone over 4.5 inches she has to use with both hands anyway, might as well go all out. They have Nexus 6's on display at certain stores, which I think is even bigger and she said it was fine.

Search your model {carrier}, and put xda root after it. I rooted mine a while back and it took 15 minutes. Be sure to install the Samsung USB drivers and kies. Cyanogenmod is OK, but I recommend looking at the curry roms offered within xda.
Good luck familia.

Really wish the Droid/Razr phones were available outside of Verizon. Had a bad experience with a VZW model Note 3 with a locked bootloader; won't ever buy another VZW phone.

>Really wish the Droid/Razr phones were available outside of Verizon.
they are. just not in the US.
you would have to import and look out for the frequencies.
>>
>>53513870
I just wish that other companies followed that more industrial design aesthetic instead of everyone trying to get more and more rounded and simplified. The only Android manufacturers I see doing something else really are Sony.

Depending on how much money I have once I get rid of my contract phone and go non-contract, I might get a Sony phone. At least they look like actual electronic devices and not black blobs.
>>
>>53513974

I agree with you, but at the same time... whatever I buy just goes in a black TPU case anyway and they all wind up looking like rubber rectangles so it really doesn't matter. In fact, the thinner and less robust the phone itself, the better it winds up being in its case.

I wish companies would make a phone with a full titanium, rubber, or leather shell and an inset screen so the glass screen protector it inevitably gets would sit flush with the shell.
>>

Okay, I'll bite.

>What smartphone are you currently using?
Lumia 950
>Pros?
Awesome hardware overall. Great camera, screen, general specs, removable battery, microSD slot, solid build quality, all that.
Windows Phone 10 is actually... Pretty nice, for the most part. I personally like it better than Android.
>Cons?
Despite being mostly good and advertised as a stable OS, WP10 is still very obviously in its beta stages. It's generally unstable, and there are even usability-related bugs here and there.
The new Lumia devices should have shipped with WP8.1, WP10 just isn't ready for the masses regardless of how much MS wants to push Windows 10.

There's also the whole "muh apps" that could be a huge con to 90% of people. Personally, WP has all the apps I used on Android anyway, so I don't give a shit about this.

The razr M was almost fucking exactly that. The screen protector was flush with the outer bezel, which was a separate piece of metal. I dropped that shit, caseless, on the fucking ground like three or four times, and one time I actually kicked it across the god damn sidewalk by accident. It was fine. One month after I bought a Moto X, I dropped it on the ground, and because its front is all one piece of glass because >muh futurism, I've had a phone with a half-shattered screen for a year now.

Pls someone help me.

I just bought a Moto X Pure 64GB for $400 flat on sale PLUS a $25 gift card to B&H.

I thought it was a great deal and snagged it. While I think its a fantastic phone (though it is a lot bigger than I wish was) and miles better than my old HTC One, For some reason I just cant cope with the price.

Mostly because the Nexus 6P is about $500 flat with a $50 B&H gift card. Not to mention the Nexus 5X 32GB can be copped on Project Fi for $250 and then cancel the service so like $280ish really.

What im really trying to say is, am i thinking way too much about this? Should I keep the Moto or try out the 5x and 6P? they are meant to be the best phones out there now.

For a while I agreed with you anon. But recently I tried a cleansing reformat/reinstall and almost all of my issues went away... so maybe the upgrade is just borked.

>>53511581
So OP, I'm on a Nokia Lumia 1520, one of the last phones developed and made by 'Nokia'.

Pros:
Monster screen (IPS 1080p) viewability is fantastic from pitch dark to bright daylight, I really think IPS is the way to go. Monster battery, I can still get 2+ days with moderate to heavy use. Monster camera, makes even my shitty skills look good. Easy to repair, I've already replaced some parts (I wanted to change the color of the case) and it was easy and cheep.

Cons:
Awkward to explain. Apps, honestly not great, not that I care about Instagram or shit, but I still have to explain the handicap and how it 'doesn't affect me'. Old hardware, 2GB of ram in 2016, Snapdragon 800 in 2016. WP 10 is working for me, but I have had things crash on me and Cortana is somehow worse than on WP 8.1...

WP apps are shit beyond belief. This is something you don't get from just looking at what apps are available, but only once you start using them. Everything from WhatsApp to FB to LINE to just about anything else is vastly inferior to the versions on other platforms.

I am currently on WP, my last phone was the Galaxy S i9000. To the day I retired that phone, I haven't said a single bad thing about it and actually felt a little bad about putting away the fellow that served me faithfully for half a decade. I can't wait to move away from the phone I am using now. The 1020's hardware is fine, it's Nokia after all, but the fucking WP OS, fuck that shit.
>>
I currently have a nexus 5, looking for a slightly smaller replacement because the screen cracked and the battery life sucks dick. Anyone who likes Sony and follows their phone trends, I have a question for you.

The Z3 came out in 09/2014
The Z4/Z3+ came out in 06/2015
The Z5 came out in 10/2015
The X Perf. comes out 06/2016

Can anyone who followed the pricing trends of previous models tell me when the price of the Z5 will go down?
I know it will once the XP comes out, but do I have to wait til then to see the Z5 start to go down, or is it going to steadily fall before then?

I'm on an S3 right now and it's starting to show its age, and the Z5 is the only phone that looks appealing.

I'm running with a 925 right now, and while the design is awesome it's really starting to show its age. With heavy use I need to charge it around 1.5 times a day (assuming I keep it off at night which I usually do). I needed to drive to a place from an airport, and HERE Drive (which is usually beyond awesome at what it does) just didn't work. I had location on and everything, but my position indicator was wrong and would not change. I'm this close to just throwing down money on a Moto G while I wait a few months until I can get a better device
>>
>>53522206

Companies won't flock to it, because with how miniscule the market share is they won't be making W10 apps with phones in mind. Tablets, computers, and Xbox maybe but not phones.

I don't use very many apps, but when the ones I do use NEVER update and are missing features/clunky as hell you know you're done.

Adults don't want windows phones because Android is more plentiful or because Apple has better support and ecosystem. Kids don't want them because everyone has an iPhone or Galaxy, and because WP doesn't have Snapchat or whatever it is that's popular these days. Even if they did, Microsoft doesn't make any mid-range devices and the 950 sucks and is over priced

Galaxy S3 here.

Pros:
+nice AMOLED screen
+large storage (16GB)
+cheap to get (I guess - I got mine cheap w/ some shitty GlamourS4/N3 ROM - it runs back-to-noot now)
+high res 8M camera
+decent battery life (unless you run it with max brightness all the time, which is a completely stupid thing to do)

Cons:
-got none,it's pretty good

Assuming you have the GT-I9300 international model,go for either back-to-noot 4.4.4,which is simply a port of the Korean S3 ROM,or go for a Android 6.0 ROM. I had 6.0 once but it was sucking battery a lot, while back to noot was just perfect for my phone.

I think I'd like to try an oled screen. Because I saw some tv's at best buy and noticed a dramatic difference between oled and the lcd contrast/color range. I wasn't sure how much resolution mattered in all honesty. Soo I suppose a solid phone with a nice screen.

Main purpose is to read pdf's and comics. I could get a tablet but I'm truly in need of a phone right now.

So max budget 350... pushing for 400 if need be.

Actually I'm using S3mini. I'm looking for phones with high durability and battery life, good camera resolution and price under US350. I've been searching about one plus x though there are negative reviews related to customer technical support and software problems. I'd be glad to know your suggestions, I don't know what would be the best choice for me yet(considering the price).

Phone: Nexus 4 with CyanogenMod
Pros:
-4 years and still working fine
-got it for $200
-have never used a screen protector; still 0 damage on screen except for a tiny scratch on the bottom right corner
-screen is still perfectly responsive in all areas
-all the buttons still work
Cons:
-battery life is absolute shit
-camera is absolute shit

Probably gonna get the mi5 when it comes out. Maybe the OnePlus 3 depending on the specs and price.

what the flying fuck are you talking about?

Do you actually think Samsung has the right order when literally every other manufacturer (barring some Samsung wannabe chinkphones) has the back button on the correct side aka the left?

Also on screen buttons are fine, much better than Shamesung's iPhone ripoff home button and backwards recent apps and back buttons.

iPhone 5 masterrace
Pros:
Very nice design, if not the nicest looking phone of all time. The last good black iPhone color option. Flat edges so it can stand on it's side. Durable, no case since I bought it at launch but still in pretty nice condition after a few drops on asphalt and tiles. Still running very smooth, it was a bit jerky for a while after iOS 9, but they must have done something in an update recently because it's running just as smooth as my iPad Air 2. Has an insane amount of accessories designed for it. AirDrop. Siri is great, but still has a lot that could be improved.
Cons:
The bad battery hasn't improved over time to say the least. No touch ID. Even though I feel the camera holds up very well I still feel like the most tempting thing about getting a new phone is getting a better camera. I want to list more but I honestly can't come up with more, anyone wanna help?

Incredible screen, performance, and camera. The call quality is also top notch, very under-appreciated. The pen is fun to use. It's useful at times as well. And if you decide to never use it, you still have a very high end phone.
>Cons?
Battery life is awful. Some stock apps ruin their Playstore versions. For example, the preinstalled Microsoft suite is broken. And you can't download the working versions that you would use on other devices. Speaking of which, there's a whole lot of bloat on the phone in general. You can ignore 98% of it but it might still annoy you.
>>
>>53528907

have you ever used Android? I've been on Android since the G1, but with all the shit in the news lately, I've been kind of wanting to give iOS another look. Back in the day iOS had massive shortcomings (basic shit like multitasking, copy and paste, etc), but it seems like they've fixed most of it.

Siri seems to still be a goddamn joke, but other than that, are there any shortcomings left?

I dont really know where to go here. last phone was a zenfone 2 that I put paranoid android on, it was alright but it had a lot of problems, and with zen ui it was horrible so I had to nigger rig it to work, dont really want to do that again
I had the original 5 and i love it, was easy to work on, great support, great development, everything was good except shit battery life and camera
at this point battery life and the camera are most important to me, followed by good performance and then I guess using the phone for music, although that isn't as important, I have a music player but it's one more thing to carry
what should I do here?

>>
>>53529859
Well, theres the filesystem for one, which isn't there. It never mattered to me, but it seems like it really does to a lot of Android users for some reason. That still doesn't mean you can't have one, it's just that I think Apple makes their phones with basic functionality and expect the user to expand upon what features they want with apps. For example, there are lots of file managers on the app store that act just as if you were using the real file system, I don't really see a problem with these as they do the job just as good. Apps are of course still sandboxed so for security reasons if you have say, an mp3 file (shitty example) in your file manager and you want to open it in a third party music player, you'll have to open the file manager and select the files and then send them to the music player instead of the other way around. It's a shitty example though because third party music players can access your normal music library and you could have just put the files directly in the player instead of the file manager to begin with.
The biggest con here though, is that if you run Windows you'll have to connect your device with a cable and then open iTunes to transfer files to or from the phone, but it's not as much of a hassle as it sounds like.
I can definitely that there were things on Android back then that I still can't do on iOS, but never have missed those things. I guess it depends on the user, I would basically recommend an iPhone to absolutely everyone unless they are a hardcore Android user and couldn't live without it for various reasons.
But just to answer some stuff
>No microSD card slot
Probably one of the biggest turn offs for other people that I can totally understand. There are ways to circumvent this, but they are mostly clumsy and not good solutions at all. iTunes is great for managing storage though, and I have yet to fill up my 16GB model.

The new prepaid plans looked pretty damn good to me. I managed to talk vodafone down on their $40 a month red plan to $36 a month on a 12 month contract with 6gb monthly data and ofc u get more and the data pool when combining plans. +ulimited call/text.

For prepaid I'm not really very knowledgeable but the prices have been getting a lot better, you should check ozbargain out as well for more info.

My dad was paying #190 a month for his 10year old buisness mobile plan and i recently updated him to a new plan with an extra 6GB of data for $150 less... Prices have changed a LOT over the past 3 years or so as well. previously there was no plans below $50 with unlimited calls/text and over 2-3gb now there are plans with all that around $30.

Two best smartphone designs thus far. N9's tie to software was fucking crazy though.

It's a shame that iOS is riddled with small problems that require Jailbreaking to fix. I was considering a 5se (or whatever they'll call it) if it kept the 5/s design language. But if it can't be jailbroken I'll have to move over the android (fine but I prefer a boxier aesthetic and am not sold on the z5c because of DRM keys, etc).
>>
>>53536774

Crazy good, that is. Though there's just too many problems with Meego Instance to keep using my N9 nowadays.
>>
>>53536796

>>
>>53536803

I had a Lumia 720 for a while and it was pretty great. Though I'm hesitant to go back to Windows Phone now that application support seems to have broken even more and they've change interface design in WP10.

I have read that it's possible to Interop Unlock WP10 though and play around with lower level settings. This appeals to me somewhat as it's something I liked a lot about jailbroken iOS and rooted Android.

It should be the Z5 if going by pure hardware, but Sony's software has much to be desired.

I don't understand the battery life issue. Just get a Zerolemon battery. It even comes with a case that turns the awkward, curvy, angley design of the phone into a nice, symmetric, boxy, flat phone. And lasts like 3 days with heavy use.

I'm thinking about switching to either the Priv or 6S. How much of a mistake is the former?

Lumia user here.
I've seen that they are killing Here Maps on Windows Phone in a few months.

I am ready to leave the platform when this happens.
Where should i go for good offline navigation and offline maps? IOS or Android?

If it's only the Map app that you are using then the maps app on Win 10 is just as good.

If you are using their other apps (HERE transit etc) then yeah, I don't blame you at all if you wanna move.
