I'm currently using an S3 International (2gb ram). It runs pretty well with a custom marshmallow ROM, so I was wondering whether I should buy a zerolemon for it or another phone. How does it stack against current phones? I don't game on it.
>>
>>53474806
if you don't care about the extra size of the zerolemon I would stick with the s3 since the only true advancements in the smartphones right now are the battery life, the rest are gimmicks like the biometric scanners.

Thanks. I'll compare the prices and see if I can accept the compromise.

Just got a Galaxy s5 and this phone is awesome. I bought it used in basically brand new shape, unlocked for all carriers, clean IMEI. This phone is soooo much more of an upgrade from an iPhone 4s. The amount of freedom and flexibility you have on Android devices much less Galaxy phones is mind-blowing. It feels so good to be able to put my porn, music, pictures, and whatever else on a microSD and throw it into my phone and have it all be there, seeing as alot of my internet activity is done from a smartphone and whatever isn't blends right into that of my phone. The removable battery is awesome as well. The fact you can buy aftermarket or replacement/extra/spare batteries is so good and it really is a shame they are making the newer models unibody. This phone is going to stay with me for much longer than my iPhone did.

Lg g3.

It's quick to get warm but never unpleasantly hot unless it's on the charger.

At stock it starts throttling at 65, I've pushed that up to 75 so it doesn't hold me back during every day use.

That temp was with me on 4chan in clover.

Pic related is current temp off the charger

is the Z1C still a decent phone? I'm not trying to go over $200, so the Z3C is a bit out of range for me, and I'm looking for something <5 inches.
>>
>>53478688
how do you see this
>>
>>53478688
That still seems too hot. My phone has been idle, but it is running at less than half that temperature (basically room temperature). I'm pretty sure it doesn't even hit 50C while quick charging. There are some options to make the G3 heat up less, but it will just throttle more. Might have to RMA it or get a new phone if you're out of warranty.

>>53479158
Z1C is still a good phone, but it is no longer being supported with updates from Sony, so it won't see Marshmallow. Z3C is worth the extra money just so you get updates for a little while, but expect Sony to drop support soon enough.

My current devices are an iPhone 4 and a Blackberry q10. They're okay in their own respects - but they are also flawed in their own ways.

I'm thinking about buying a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact. I only seem to read good things about this phone - but would it still be a good buy in 2016, provided I can get one 2nd hand for around $250AUD?

Also, I haven't played around with android since I had a Galaxy i9000, so I have a few questions.

The Z3C is receiving a marshmallow upgrade - do current users think it'll be usable after this (speed, multitasking, etc)?

How easy is it to get root access? I don't care for loading custom roms so much as things like installing AdAway, removing shit I don't like.

If I get root then update the phone, do I lose root access?

Is there a way to get root without fucking up the camera (I understand there's something about DRM keys for all the camera's functions)?

Hello, Z3C owner here since December 2015. You can get root, unlocked bootloader, and recovery without wiping the DRM partition. What you do is downgrade to an older official software release using a flashtool, root using an exploit, backup the DRM partition, unlock the bootloader (which wipes the DRM partition), flash recovery, flash ROM, then restore the DRM partition. The reason you want to do this is that the camera app disables noise reduction when it detects the DRM partition is wiped (even though it doesn't actually use any of the keys in the DRM partition). If you manage to nuke the DRM partition without keeping a backup, there is a tutorial on XDA to fake a restored partition so the camera app will enable noise reduction again. (Apps that actually rely on the DRM keys, like the bundled movies app, will still be broken.)

If you want to update while rooted just wait for someone to repack the OTA file (FTF) into a ZIP so you can flash it in TWRP recovery.

CyanogenMod is pretty fucked and there aren't many developers, but you aren't interested in that. There aren't any stock-based ROMs worth flashing either; just stick to Sony's stock ROM and flash mods.

Sony has two Marshmallow branches: the Marshmallow Concept (minimal changes from AOSP besides stuff like the camera) and the Marshmallow Beta (the fully skinned beta leading to the OTA release). Right now both are being maintained simultaneously. The Beta is too new for many user impressions to be out, but the Concept seemed to improve speed. Sony's software is pretty responsive as it is. It's a bit unlikely that Sony will update its Z2/Z3 platform to Android N, considering the Z1 platform isn't getting Marshmallow.

>>
>>53481521
IIRC these were out one or two years ago, but cost a metric fuckton of money.

This one's already dropped in price, you definitely won't find it for $20 or something in the next year or so.

I'd grab it, if you were aiming for it. Definitely not an impulse buy though.

>>53481166
you need to check what capacity your phone can support, older or budget models sometimes max at 64GB

Been using Android since 2011; Nexus S > Galaxy S i9000 > Moto G2013

First two I bought used, so I never spent more than 200 € on a phone.

But the Moto G is starting to fall apart, granted I really mistreted it.

I'm not rally looking for a completely open stock-like device, as I'm not interested in ROMs anymore, but at the very least I'd need root (for Tasker and such).

I'm italyfag and my carrier is offering this contract: S7 for roughly 26 €/month + your current plan (which is great and cheap, 8 €), 30 months contracts. After a year you could swap for the next Samsung flagship.

Should I go for it? Is TouchWiz really that bad?
>>
>>53481545
I was planning on 128 for $30-35, but the extra for the price seems reasonable. I like saving money, but good bang for the buck is worth spending extra.

My nexus 5 broke recently and I'm in the market for a new phone. Considering the nexus 5 as no expandable memory and poor battery life those are the main things I've found that I need in a new phone.

I've been looking at the LG G4 and G5, obviously the G5 isn't out yet but the specs look alright apart for the battery. The LG G4 looks good but its much bigger and the buttons look awkward but I could probably get it cheap now.

Question:
are Chinese manufacturers harvesting westerners' data for the Chinese govt through their smartphones?

They're so cheap for us, there's no way they can be making a profit from them. They must be selling them at a loss. For which there are different potential explanations;
>1) They are fronts, or govt-owned, or govt-controlled, and the main purpose is to gain as much of westerners' data as possible (not to mention their own people, but w/e I don't care lol). Or
>2) They are independent, and selling the phones to us at a loss for a while in an attempt to get a good market share. Then they'll make money. Or,
>3) a combination of 1 and 2. Started out as 2 then got compromised as in 1, because it requires a lot of money to burn, and even for strong companies in China it's a risk. So the govt offers to help, in exchange for the data, etc.

Which is it? As a loyal westerner (Brit), should I avoid a Chinese smartphone? I know the classic thinking around here is "I'd rather have privacy from my own govt, who cares if PRC has my data they can't touch me lololol", but I feel differently. If it's a choice of where my data has to go, I'd rather keep it in-house. Fuck the insect-rike chinks. Soulless.

(pic UNRELATED, a very fertile JAPANESE qt)
>>
>>53487083
Yeah chinkphones support all the required bands for pooinloo carriers. I'd get the Mi5 if it supported my LTE bands, it's more expensive but great value for money.
>>
>>53487141
If you want to find out how much data they are actually harvesting you should probably buy one and monitor your wifi at home with wireshark or something.
Anyway I wouldn't trust their stockrom desu. At least flash cm if possible. (and then you still have the firmware which does god knows what)

I downloaded the factory image from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images but the directory includes neither of those anyway (and didn't in past updates either IIRC). See screenshot: left is the factory image directory with its files, right is the flash-all.bat which I would usually execute (and then have to set my phone up from scratch).

i'm in a little bit of dilemma. i don't use my phone a lot.

i just use it to take pictures
use snapchat
text
calls

i'm not what you would call a power user. i had a galaxy s3 since the release date and im getting tired of it, not to mention it's gotten very fucking slow.

i need a new phone. i'd need very fast storage and a really good camera.

any suggestions? i have $1000 to blow. i don't wanna get the most expensive one possible though if there are better alternatives.

Incorrect, the US Z5c's have the fingerprint sensor but are not enabled by the software. Flashing an international firmware activates the sensor. It does not even need an unlocked bootloader so you keep warranty.

my smartphone history so far:
>Sony Ericsson P1i
>iPhone 3GS
>Nokia N9
>Samsung Note 3
>Blackberry Passport

There were some other cheap android 2.x and 3.x phones inbetween that I used as burners/travel phones. Except for the passport, which I've had for 4 months so far, I used each phone for at least 2 years. I want to keep using the PP for another year at least, but Whatsapp announced that they'll stop support at the end of this year. As much as I'd like to avoid whatsapp, I need to use it.

So, now's the question, which phone next? I want to stay away from Google and Apple, so iPhones and android phones are a no-go.
>inb4 root
Even with a completely google-free android phone, at one point you're forced to install an app from the g-play store, which requires a google account and installs google services, which I don't want to do.

I've been looking at the Jolla and I really like it (really liked the N9 with MeeGo too), but I'm afraid that the lack of community support will be a problem.

Any thoughts? I think it's sad that we've come to an oligopoly between only two firms. It's like the US voting system, you don't get what you want, you can only chose between two evils.

I'm still someone who uses a flip phone and one thing that stops me from getting a smart phone is how providers will force me onto a more expensive monthly bill even if I don't use any data just by default. Can you fool verizon into activating a phone without them knowing by the phone serial numbers wither or not it's a smart phone so I can keep my cheaper monthly bill? Buying the phone itself is just a one time thing but they will force a plan change. If I go to a different provider they still do this sort of thing but maybe I can fool them better ? Or should I just stick to using a flip phone ?

How did you even manage to turn on a computer, let alone navigate to this board?

What about GPS at sea where there's no antennaes? Of course GPS is fucking using satellites. Modern watches even use GPS to keep track of time.
GPS uses the strength of the signal of 7 or 8 satellites (at least) to triangulate the position and height of the GPS device. No data is sent back and forth, only received.
>>
>>53492324
No. It doesn't even have US LTE bands because Xiaomi would rather focus on India.

>>53492454
If you aren't going to use data why buy a smartphone? Just get a tablet or an iPod or something if you're only going to use wifi. Also Verizon sucks, if it was a GSM carrier like T-Mobile/AT&T you could just put your sim card in the new phone. Since Verizon uses CDMAids it is more complicated.

I've currently got the LG G Vista 2.

Pros.
Fast
20+hr battery life SOT is around 6 hours
Almost as fast as the G4, but still gets shit on
$400
Stylus is a plus

Cons
front camera sucks
bootloop when tried to root
LG easyhome sucks ass
Apps crash sometimes
16GB of space is really 12 plus some
mid range phone means late access to updates

Overall though phone is like a 7/10
Still better than my SIII that I rocked for 4 years.

enjoy your 800€ Micro-USB 2.0 device then until Samsung announces the S8 with Type-C 3.1 in 11 Months
Yes they said it, in an interview Samsung told they are aware of USB-C and 3.1 features but were too shitty to implement a 20c adapter in a box that gets sold for 800€.

Enjoy your PenTile Super Amoled Display with the same resolution as last year in 2016 too, whereas 2011 we had RGB Super Amoled PLUS
"Water cooling" already existed in the Lumia 950&950XL such as external SD since the Galaxy S in 2010
Have fun with your non-removable battery like in the S6 and unlike S S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 etc

Seriously though, Samsung is Apple 1.9 right now I mean just look at the starting price range tag. those are digits that prior were privileged by Apple and Android phones used to be the counterpart by being same top-level of industry standards and design while being cheaper 3 times - now the sides are starting to switch already. And this just fucking sucks imho. Yes I mad.

I fucking hate Touchjizz. The Galaxy S6 is a decent phone, but seriously fuck Samsung. This thing will bootloop if you try to boot into recovery, and I can't root unless I use Odin because Android 5.5, and I'm scared my bootloader is probably locked so I won't root it with Odin.

What the fuck happened with Android phones? I feel like buying and jailbreaking an iPhone would've been quicker and safer

Well /spg/, might as well ask.

Looking for a rather cheap phone for my dad, since his last one took a 8 meter dive onto solid concrete. It needs to be rather compact, so around the 5"inch range and in the 200~250$ region.

I was considering either a used Samsung S5 or a used LG G2, but the Meizu M2 mini seems like a decent deal. Any other options i should look at?

Opinions/suggestions/warnings? also i care about my privacy but im terribly uninformed. from lurking a little bit here there seems to be a bit of dislike for android/google. also what is rooting.

I don't mind decent chinkshit, but i have very poor experience with Xiaomi.

Do not buy a moto x pure and root it or unlock the bootloader this phone has so many hardware issues it's ridiculous. Light leak is fairly common on the screen. Also my speaker grill fell off today. I unlocked the bootloader after one week of having the phone, big mistake.
