Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size - makes you look autistic
X220 - 12.5", lightweight - shit resolution
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (no, not the old ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.
>you will get laughed at for looking like an autistic neckbeard

I'd bother taking that up, but I'll probably end up getting an x220.
I see there are x220i models, are the only differences an ips screen? Are those screens cross compatible?

>>52597797
The wiki says otherwise, but I see plenty of people who run it no problem, so I'll probably end up sitting with the x220 and upgrade the ram whenever.

Really? Some girls actually have started conversations with me asking about it.

>Anon, your laptop looks like it could take a nuclear holocaust! I've never seen one in a store, where did you get it?

A journalist hottie asked me this at work a few months ago. Apparently, writers and journalists like nice keyboards and rugged computers.

It doesn't count when they're locked up in your rape chamber, anon.
>>
>>52598963
IT'S NOT
YOU NEED AT LEAST 4K TO BROWSE /g/
Who cares about the disgusting scaling in Windows, cost and the fact that the bigger the resolution is the bigger power consumption is, not mentioning decreased lifetime and increased fragility. /g/ says you need 4k - it must be true. /g/ is never wrong.
>>
>>52599025
Aw shucks. My bad, then.
>>

>>52599001
-i models have crap specs, they're cheaper models for education. A T420i is acceptable because you can upgrade the CPU to put it back on par with a regular T420, but the X220i has a soldered CPU so you're stuck with whatever you get. Not sure about screen upgradability, but I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to.
>>
>sold my x301
>miss it almost immediately
are any of the newer x series that thin and light? i'd be pretty happy with x301 tier comfyness with a core i CPU

also pic rel is a toughbook used by US military and the police. It's meant to survive extreme temperatures and it's built to be as reliable as possible.
It has a 1024x768 because the actual fragility and power consumption (ergo, mobility) matters.
The only reason why /g/ is recommending high-res screens is because /g/ is full of autistic underaged aspies who never leave their parent's basements.
>>
>>52599073
This retarded picture was about x220 which has 12,5" screen.
>>
>>52598987
Yes, it should be a drop in replacement, I think there might be another connector but it should just work like it has in the past.
Maybe ask the seller of the product, they probably have been asked that question before.

>>52599001
No 'i' designated machines only come with i3 or even celeron processors... avoid, X series require entire motherboard swaps due to soldiered on CPU.

i models are entry level for the machines, like for schools or for enterprise fleets.

Also IPS screens are available as an option, so X220/X230 can be configured with TN or IPS, it just depends on the Machine Type Model on the bottom.

Check the MTM number lookup.
Doesn't work on all models, I couldn't find the specific model I was looking for but it did cover the first four numbers.
Its a hit and miss but it's accuracy is better than everymac's serial results.

>>52599092
X1C3/2 were a major dissapointment to me compared to my S70 aka X300 pre-production model

I liked the T430 a lot, getting a T430s for the IPS mod. X230 IPS was cool but eh, didn't dig into it.

>being this ignorant
Ayy lmao.
I had all Thinkpads from X and T series since x61 (including x100, x120e and edge 11), even the T430 with modded 1920x1080 screen. After three years of swapping I decided to stay with x230 with IPS 1366x768 screen. When I take my laptop with me traveling I require long battery life and good quality screen - 1366x768 one is the best option in this case. When I need 4k screen to play with VMs, manage servers and do other desktop shit I just plug it into my eGPU. No fucks given.

>>
>>52599330
Not really, most likely the same WXGA screen.
WXGA+ panels have the lenovo logo on the left on X200/1 units.
You could do the AFFS mod but that will require a cable and the screen.

There should be a performance increase from C2D to i5 yus, not much but its there, plus graphical peformance will be better.

>>52599361
Dude thats an insanely great deal, thats a fucking steal it shouldn't even be considered as most X240's start at $350 and i7 machines probably end up $600 easily.
You can't compare that robbery with other machines, its just either luck or great timing.
It took me about 2 weeks of somewhat compusing searching to get a 2010 iMac 27" for $300 with shipping, most go for $350 and even then those are problem childs.

Thinkpads are particularly notable for the accessibility of their innards. Your X220t will be a bit harder to repaste than the bigger and simpler models, but it's doable. Get the hardware maintenance manual from Lenovo's site and follow it well and everything should be fine.

The 'i' models are the same as the normal model, just lower-specced (i3 CPUs instead of i5 or i7, for instance).

I've done the kbd swap into an x230 and I am not sorry I did. I kept the x230 palmrest and just took my time grinding off the kbd nubs with a dremel and small file.

Remapping the keys under Windows was dead simple. As you might guess, it took a little longer to figure out under Linux but ultimately was not at all difficult once you know how.

First off, you're not wrong.

As an aside, I think /g/ and /tpg/ REEEEEEEEs over low resolutions because a lot are destitute NEETs and have only one computer scraped together from Good Boy points.

The trouble is that nobody thinks about use case before shitposting. Fuck, there are at least a handful of posts every thread where some faggot didn't bother to read the guide and then bitches about their own choice of TP that was never meant for what they intended to do with it. Just because it's a "business" laptop doesn't mean it was meant for every job description in the world of business.

I have an x230 and it's perfect for what it is - the portable, seldom-used-for-work cohort of my powerful multi-monitor desktop system. I couldn't tolerate any x768 res as my one and only machine and display either. Even that can be easily allayed by a docking station and a good monitor with peripherals.

So I just got my T420s from ebay. It took 28 fucking hours to get Windows up to date and install my software.

Windows Update is such a joke compared to apt. Every time it crashed on an update it had to re-download everything. None of the packages cached. I've only had updates this painful twice in >10 years of running Sid.

That said, the machine itself has a good solid feel to it and after a painfully slow load time, handles the programs I need it to perfectly adequately. It solves my problem and is worth what I paid.

>>
>>52603821
I think the root of the problem is the slow traditional disk. So running Windows Update hit the pain points very hard, with its reading writing, verifying, unzipping, overwriting. My main use for it is developing an Office 2010 addin, which is just typing and it's fine.

I would rate the "windows experience" pretty low, but I have no real basis for comparison. For instance, just clicking on Windows Update in the control panel would sometimes take 5 - 10 seconds just to get Windows Update on the screen. It was like 3.1 on a 486, but everything looks nicer. Once I have whatever program open, though, everything is ok.

It does seem to run The Stick of Truth fine, which was the secondary mission.

Good to see you got it down to manageable levels at least.

Hey guys,

So my Elitebook 8560w suddenly won't run of battery. It worked fine few hours ago. Windows says its 100% charged, but the battery wear level says it's at 100% even though the battery is 4 years old. So obviously something is up.

Is it more likely the battery that crapped out all of the sudden, or could it be the mobo?

I'm looking at the x220 , I read some guidelines around here and apparently sometimes the bios or something will be locked? How should I go about purchasing an x220? Questions to ask the seller , any extra accessories to buy? What to look out for? I'm interested in this thinkpad because it looks like a good deal, only real problem I have with it is the USB 2.0s

I recently picked up another X200, but I discovered the thinklight does not work.

(I press the fn+PgUp key, and nothing happens. The thinklights work on all my other machines so I don't think it's a PEBKAC issue.)

I hopped on ebay, as usual, but to my surprise I was unable to find any replacements, not even at the $35+ level.

What are my options? Are thinklights interchangeable between models? I have two T60 's I'd be willing to tear into for parts models, since I basically am not using them.

>>
>>52605296
I can't tell you that right now anon, as the seller never told me a stylus wasn't included. I already have one purchased, but it's going to be next week when I get it.

I heard it's pretty good though. So I'm hyped for it.

Would say it's only better if you want the moving touchscreen. Otherwise they seem the same to me.

My 9 cell battery overnight the battery stopped holding a charge completely. It won't charge, it reports as 0% and never changes. The battery light flashes but none of of the codes make sense, it's not too hot or too cold. Is it dead?

x200's thinklight is connected to the screen cable, surprisingly they're kinda pricey ~$20

hmmm, that's annoying.

I found a top screen assembly on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-X200-12-1-Black-Laptop-LCD-Back-Cover-Assembly-Fru-75Y4590-/291190549430 , but the seller doesn't take questions and it's not really clear to me if it includes a thinklight or not. If it includes a thinklight I'll probably get it, as the top cover is scratched to hell.

Where are you finding the ~$20 replacement, just lenovo's website?

That is an x201i top cover --- are they directly compatible? If so, I suppose I could use my label maker to print out "x200".

As for LCD vs CCFL, i'm about 95% sure I have the CCFL version, haven't opened it up to confirm. I don't see anything on that listing showing what it is, though. Can you tell just by the shape of the screen connectors or something?

Battery probably shit itself. Sometimes it's not the cells themselves, the charge circuitry in the battery can go out too. In my experience that kills chinese knock-off thinkpad batteries as much or more than crappy cells. I've opened up chink batteries to harvest the 18650s for my atheism flute before and they're fine.

Even though it seems unlikely from your symptoms, you're right to at least consider it's the mobo instead - I had a T60 that would run off of a battery (this was a spare - I had a T61 I charged it in) but couldn't charge a battery itself. The battery specs were fine, it just wouldn't charge. The light would blink but it wouldn't do shit.

I thought it was a meme at first, too. Now I actually prefer it to touchpads. (Macs have those nice big metal touchpads that are great and on par/better for some stuff, everything else is garbage and you're better off with the nub.)

It is a bit slower than touchpads, but the advantage is that you can get all the way from one corner of the screen to another without having to pick your finger up and swipe a bunch of times. Also it makes some light FPS-type games playable (minecraft, doom, morrowind) with an experience that is not as good as a mouse but 1000x better than a touchpad.

The very first thing I did with my 'new' x220 was to disable the touchpad in bios.
