I don't have any screws or nuts around that are the right size. One of the pins is replaced, though.
I also ripped out one half of the tools in it since there were 3 (three) flathead screwdrivers and a bottle opener and awl in it, so I just took the screwdrivers out (fuck it i'll use a dime or the tip of the saw or something) and plan on replacing it with a DIY'd up LED light when I can find some button cells laying around to use. Maybe rigging up a little solar panel from a calculator to it for recharging if I can get a rechargeable button cell out of something.

No, America isn't crazy dangerous. There are places where it's dangerous to go, but you have to almost seek them out in high population areas. If you are there then you wouldn't question the need to carry, but that demographic generally don't browse /g/.
Firearms is seen as a right in rural areas. These people (generally) grew up around guns, and have been taught how to use them as a tool.
I really don't see a problem with gun ownership in America. It's thick into American culture. We have a huge Military population, and a lot (maybe most? Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Hamilton, I can easily name 15 off the top of my head) of our historical figures were military. Not to mention we have shit tons of land, which lends to the cowboy culture.
