With the exception of ME, every Windows version was technologically more advanced from its predecessors.

>>52171736
There was no tech advancement or innovation between XP to Vista/7/8.1/10. They didn't start from scratch and develop a more efficient kernel, a better file system, better management of packages and remove duplication of Visual C++ libraries that create a 50GB Windows folder over time.

All we got was recycled NT kernel with a different skin and window manager.

The best version of Windows was win2k.

It was the last version of windows created with the professional user in mind.

Beginning with XP, Microsoft shifted to the drooling retards and grandmas as their target audience.
Quality of their products went down the drain with it.

No, since MS gave you the choice to use 2k instead. Only retards would use ME anyway.

>>
>>52171443

So many comfy memories from 98SE.
>>
>>52173243
well 2k was the NT line (nt 5) which was their ground up kernel.

ME was based on Windows 9x which was using an abomination of a hybrid kernel and was pretty much ducttape, all 9x series had issues and would crash frequently.

NT was rock solid and 2000 was just the first consumer release of it, even though it was targeted at businesses.

XP was pretty much 2k with ME's features slapped on top.
>>
>>52173243
same way NT4.0 coexisted with 95/98

NT is better than 9x

>>
>>52171159
Yeah, so great that something in it's core libs didn't deallocate memory properly. Because of that, most Win95 services always left a small amount of unreachable data, slowly clogging RAM. Wait 2-3 days and suddenly BSOD since OS could allocate even a single byte more.

While 2000 is a god tier OS, it loses points from me because it loads services on startup in series rather than XP which loads them in parallel. The boot time of 2000 is about 8 times longer than that of XP, by design.

>>
>>52171159
I had a CIT professor that was addicted to the simplicity of win98 then xp came out. He hated it said it was crap. About a year latter I take another one of his courses this time ISS services. But he was now running xp on everything he could, turns out he owned his own computer repair shop and some how in some way windows xp recovery console or one of its newer features saved his ass . Point is you can't really truly judge a os until after it's replaced and when working in the tech industry you just deal with what the standard user is using. most of what I fix and clean and work on now is win 8 and more and more win 10. And in offices where there are 1000+ machine the upgrade from windows 7 to Windows 10 usually ends up saving me tons of time.

>>
>>52174499
Yeah, I don't know. 98 on it is not terrible, but noticeably slower. NT 4, 2000, and XP (with crap turned off) are fast. I have heard that my CPU isn't optimized for 16-bit, which would make sense with 98, but the Pentium II didn't have that problem (the Pentium Pro did).

My preferred list:
XP > 10 > 2000 > 7 > Vista > 98 > NT 4 > 95 > ME > NT 3.x > 3.x

Even ME wasn't that bad though.
>>
>>52171159
Windows 95 was good for the time.
Now it's outclassed by everything.
XP was good for the time
Now it's outclassed

Hell, after a few months even Vista became a good operating system (7, 8, and now 10 all use the same kernal and pretty much are only minor tweaks and UI changes on Vista).

TL;DR: Vista takes a shit on all of these old operating systems. Fucking Vista.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Windows, is in fact, NSA/Windows, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Windows. Windows is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another locked down component of a fully functioning NSA system made useful by the NSA corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by the government.
Many computer users run a modified version of the NSA system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of NSA which is widely used today is often called “Windows”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA system, developed by the NSA.
There really is a Windows, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Windows is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Windows is normally used in combination with the NSA operating system: the whole system is basically NSA with Windows added, or NSA/Windows. All the so-called “Windows” versions are really versions of NSA/Windows.
>>
>>52175593

2000 gives me the most nostalgia, but claiming that it's better than XP just because it comes with a default theme that you can disable makes you look like a fool.

XP outclasses 2000 in:
Support for quad core
Support for large hard drives
Hardware support
Driver availablilty
Boot times
>>
>>52175605
>XP was maybe the first windows with activation

Enterprise keys disabled activation
>>
>>52175593
Yeah, I dunno, maybe you have a point (except hurr durr reddit XD). I have maintained a preference for XP since it has remained supported way longer than 2000, by not only Microsoft but by major applications such as Firefox. I do miss the professional theme of 2000 but even that's more about theme/appearance than anything. XP is just 2000 with slight changes and a new coat of paint.

OP is right. 95 was the last legit windows.

>A careless mistake by Microsoft programmers has revealed that special access codes prepared by the US National Security Agency have been secretly built into Windows. The NSA access system is built into every version of the Windows operating system now in use, except early releases of Windows 95 (and its predecessors). The discovery comes close on the heels of the revelations earlier this year that another US software giant, Lotus, had built an NSA “help information” trapdoor into its Notes system, and that security functions on other software systems had been deliberately crippled.
