Why is this important enough to warrant another board? Is it that difficult to ignore the threads in /g/?

They're two entirely different things.

I can say the same about consumer advice but then I would question "what is the purpose of a technology board if there is no computer/programming/consumer tech threads".
>>
>>52066356
>>52066387
If we kicked /v/ out, we can make room for more programming/compsci/actual technology rather than the consumer and tech support garbage that takes up most of the board.

ok then let's kick them out the /GG/

Anyone who opposes this notion is /v/ and needs to be deported back to /v/.

I was sure there was a textboard for programming.

it's okay, i made the same mistake when i first came to 4chan.
apparently, the repeating digits must be at the end of the post number, only then are they counted as a valid get.

I don't mind hardware as long as it's talking about engineering or hardware other than consumer vidya graphics cards.

/g/ used to have a textboard called /prog/, but it's dead.
>>

thats what i was referring to. most of these hardware threads are just people showing off at how rich they are or how powerful their expensive rig is. when was the last time you saw a beagle board or a raspberry thread

that board was shit, without the coherence unlike the imageboard design

I don't think there are enough grow-ups on this website to warrant a serious technology board.

Yes, you're right. It's hardware.

>papa moot didn't give us a programming board
he did. it was called /prog/. it was a textboard.
textboards were never much of a headline feature on 4chan, so they were slow, but the mods and even moot posted in there more often than in imageboards (maybe it just seemed that way, but certainly a higher percentage of the posts were from known "elevated users").

but it was clear that they weren't sustaining any traffic. you'd go one cold night in December and check in one hot afternoon in July and catch up on like 20 posts max.

4chan doesn't run on any special codebase, really. it's basically 2ch. and 4chan is open source now or something, isn't it? so just make a chan for programming and other tech stuff. honestly it shouldn't be that hard.

make some boards for different domains - AI, NLP, and other applications, systems, theory, maybe a board for web dev stuff and another board for declarative languages. fuck man, organize it whatever crazy way you want. Make the code syntax highlighter slightly less rudimentary than 4chan's code blocks and you've got the killer feature right there.

4chan got started as a way for friends of moot's to host images that they could link to on SomethingAwful. If your chan had the same use case - a sort of pastebin for 4chan - that would be solid enough footing to get started.

Not last I heard. Maybe Haruhi Nuzumiya did it recently, but that would be news to me. Other boards use vichan and similar clones.

isn't there a github repo or something? is that just the API?

in any case, 2ch is definitely open source, so what would you be losing from 4chan functionality if you copied the 2ch source? I know 4chan is modified from 2ch, but by how much? and how much does it matter? i'm still suggesting that you'd need to redo the entire comment field to handle more robust code formatting (honestly, maybe just implement a markdown parser thing).

this doesn't have to be very heavyweight.
>>
>>52069014
Probably just the API, yes.

>what would you be losing from 4chan functionality if you copied the 2ch source?
2ch is a text board, for one. 4chan was originally a fork of 2chan, but I think they rewrote it from scratch very early on. The most critical parts of 4chan's code base probably have to do with things that are invisible to the users, like moderation tools and spam prevention, and shit like that is hard to get right. I frequent one tinyboard chan that has had massive problems with spambots and invasions when they managed to piss off some 2^3chan sperg.
