The ratio system here isn't broken, it works really well.
The way it's meant to be done is this:
1. Use your first ratio free 20GB to download any music you'd like and perma-seed it.

2. As you (slowly) gain upload from that initial 20GB you're seeding, download more music you want (as much as your required will allow)
3. repeat step 2. The more you download, the more your seeding size will increase and the faster you will get upload (eventually you will have more upload then you no what to do with, I barely seed any of my music at the moment because I haven't had time to set it up).
4. If you want more upload or faster, upload your own content and making it fucking pretty with album art, correct tags and a nice, thorough description so that people actually want to snatch it.
If and once your required ratio allows, jump on staff picks and other freeleech torrents ASAP and you'll never even have to think about ratio here again.
You'll notice it's all about encouraging retention and uploading content. That's why what.cd actually works and is what it is.

i've had a membership for over a year. i just always downloaded what i want and would leave my torrents on for about a week to a month then delete them. it just recently got to this point. i never actually bothered to actively restore the ratio which is why i was asking for tips, because every other site has freeleech torrents large in size to replenish ratio or a seed point system so you don't have to sit there for a year with large files. what.cd is very traditional in how it handles ratio, and that's fine, it's just incredibly hard with music because of obscure taste.
