Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
No news.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Also Bumblebee works for this machine? Has anyone tested, or should i disable the nvidia gpu altogether from BIOS and save some battery?

pretty good deal man on the t430.

i think your temps are fine. what is it under max load? run the userbenchmark (like 30 seconds)

http://www.userbenchmark.com/resources/download/UserBenchMark.exe

and see how hot they get. your sensors are probably normal. i wouldn't disable the GPU. just use the nvidia panel to give priority to the iGPU. this way at least you have the graphics capability if you need it.
>>
>>51949310
I see nothing wrong with those temperatures. If your room is about 20-22*C, laptops will always idle at 40+*C

Today, I was browsing the web on my T430, with no peripherals connected besides the 90w AC adapter, when the screen went black, the fans shut off and the power button blinked at me twice. I sat there in shock for a moment and then tried powering it back on. The power indicator will come on and I'll hear the fan spin up, but within a half second the indicator is back off and the fan loses power. I tried removing the battery and using the AC adapter alone, using the battery alone, removing all power and holding the power button, but none of that has worked.

The configuration is as it came from the factory, except 1) I didn't have the DVD drive installed and 2) I have 2x8GB Crucial RAM sticks in there, for 16GB over the original 4GB. I will try reseating the RAM next to see if that works, once I can get near a screwdriver. I'm currently traveling and this is a bad time for a crash like this to happen :x

The system has the NVIDIA Quadro graphics option and a HD+ screen, if that makes a difference.
>>
>>51949439
Try the 'static discharge' trick:

Unplug the power supply
Remove the battery
Disconnect any cords or express cards
Press the power button 10 times, and on the 10th press hold it for 30 seconds

>I tried removing the battery and using the AC adapter alone, using the battery alone, removing all power and holding the power button, but none of that has worked.

Leave it completely unplugged from any power source for a while. Like a day. Then when you go to start it up, use only the AC cord, and hold the button for 30 seconds. If this doesnt work it's bad news man.

I hate to tell you this but this happened to my T520 recently and it was a dead mobo. I do not know why, but I removed everything (RAM, HDD, and CPU) and after putting it all back it would boot for a few minutes then die again. You could try this too, maybe it would work for you.

How do I get bumblebee to work with my t420 with nvidia optimus graphics?

I was watching other speccy screenshots from previous threads and some i5s were idling below 35C, that's why I was sceptical, but if you say it's normal I'm a little relieved.
Well now I deleted the windows partition, so can't run the benchmark. If you have an alternative for linux, I could run that.
So I shouldn't bother with bumblebee, just install the proprietary drivers and fiddle with the nvidia panel?

I just picked up an X201 this week. M540, 250GB 850 EVO SSD, 4GB RAM.

Thing seems pretty slick so far. I did a clean install of Windows 7 Pro and now I'm going through the Windows update process.

I'm debating on whether or not to bother jumping up to 8GB of RAM. I won't be doing anything intense on this thing, mostly it'll be a portable word processor and internet machine.

T420s (note the 's') is a different, slimmer model that has a soldered CPU.
>>
>>51954213
The question was as follows

>Is the T420's CPU soldered to the motherboard

The answer was given as

>T420, yes
>T420s, no

So I understood it as the T420s does not have a soldered CPU, and the T420 does. Which sucks cock if tat is the case, cause I just got myself a T420 a week ago and didn't even think to find out whether the CPU was soldered in or not.
>>

T420s = soldered

You can even dump a quad-core processor in the T420 if you don't mind temperatures up to 95c.

>>
>>51949217

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up. I got an X201 via ebay on your advice. it's a good laptop except for one crippling flaw: the screen is awful and causes eye strain. After 45 minutes of use your eyes start to hurt. I've tried adjusting brightness, no effect. Other laptops and monitors don't cause this. It has this weird pulsating glow so the screen must be shitty. I'm apprehensive to buy another ThinkPad (although I will need a new laptop soon) because of this. Any advice? Is this common with other models?

I don't think so m8

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Unofficial_maximum_memory_specs

Seems to be a rather commonly known issue when you're trying to go beyond what the stated maximum limits are. I've heard it's recommended to try to match speed, density, CAS latency as close as possible so not too surprised that jamming low voltage PC-12800 into slots designed for PC-8500 didn't fly. I have other machines that are less picky so the ram didn't go to waste.

Halp, I think I am falling for the ultrabook meme…

So backstory:
>be me
>be always using ultraportables, way before ultrabook even was a word
>currently on X200
>keyboard fucked
>screen really dark
>battery on about 3h
>1 week of conference, carrying around that fucker every full day + other shit
>get jelly at all those people with MBA's and RMBP's
>go past the MS store
>see surface book
>cream my jeans
>realize that a fully kit out version will cost $2000 (same with the RMBP's)
>realize that said $2000 will be completely sealed, and even a borked battery or a slight drop will mean that I can throw away $2000
>I_dont_think_so.jpg

so what are my light, long battery life and robust/serviceable options?

Problem is, thanks to stupid 16:9, I cant be staying on 12". My X200 (16:10) is already a huge step down from my X61 (4:3), and also it's vetical pixels (800) just dont really cut it anymore. So it must be 14" with somewhat small bezels (back in my days, all the bezels where small…).

What about the X1? The ones with the fucked up keyboard and clit buttons are really cheap currently, but I am afraid that this will be too fucked up, and wont work with linux.

What about HP's or Dulls offerings in this size rangE?

x230 with x220 classic keyboard swap running Xubuntu here

I figured out how to remap my keys to retain PgUp, PgDn, and DEL. What you've got to do is go edit the xkb keymappings here:

sudo mousepad /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/pc

from here, go make your changes so it looks like this in the next to last section:

    key  <INS> {    [  Page_Down        ]    };
key <HOME> { [ Delete ] };
key <PGUP> { [ Prior ] };
key <DELE> { [ Page_Up ] };
key <END> { [ End ] };
key <PGDN> { [ Next ] };

There was an Ubuntu forum guide to do this already but the tricky part to figure out was what the Page_Up and Page_Down syntax was. I broke my keyboard and had to boot into recovery twice.

In addition to this, you'll need to go delete or backup the .xkm file in /var/lib/xkb/ (you need to go look at what the name is) so it will rebuild with your changes. Personally, I kept mine and am glad I did when I JUSTed my whole keyboard, so:
ls /var/lib/xkb

sudo mv /var/lib/xkb/server-LOLWHATEVERYOURSIS.xkm /var/lib/xkb/server-LOLWHATEVERYOURSIS.bkp

Now restart xorg or reboot. It ain't SharpKeys, but I hope this saves somebody else the time/hassle.

>Replace battery, get 9 hours of battery life.
not on an X200. 7h max.
Which would be fine, but a new battery costs money.
And if I keep that thing for longer, I would also have to replace the keyboard and get a SSD.
And probably soon, I have to get a new screen.
So all in all, I would invest at least $400 in a machine that is worth $200 maximum.
Plus, while the X200 certainly is not a bad machine, its just not that great. My X61 was much better, but I just cant work with only 4GB of Ram anymore. Probably going to soon need 16…

You can maybe replace the screen with one of the AFFS panels that work on the X200, but then you also need to track down an X200 screen cable and lid assembly because you need the CCFL inverter.

60 (genuine battery) + 30 (keyboard) + 40 (128gb SSD) + 30/60 (glossy/matte Boe Hydis LCD panel) = only $160 or $190.

Which doesn't seem that bad to me but I would kind of balk at doing another LCD panel swap in these using the glossy panels, cutting off the digitizer takes forever with an X-acto knife. And of course you're still left with a machine that can't do 2 HD YouTube videos at once.
>>
Hello /g/, I have two T400s with quite bad hinges. I looked up to see if there was any way to tighten them and saw everyone linking to the maintenance manual. Any fellow ausfags itt? Is ~$250 a good price for a T420? This seems to be the average price I'm seeing but I wanna make sure I'm not getting swindled regardless.

That's not bad. I paid USD$220 for mine

Depends on the configuration, especially the screen. Both available options suck (TN with horrid viewing angles) on the T420, but at least get the higher-resolution one (1600x900).
>>
>>51962403
That's about AUD$306 at present, so I guess I'm happy with forking out $280 for one in good condition that I've found.

so guys, i need a somewhat cheap laptop as a replacement for my shitbook.

so far, i've narrowed it down to the t420 and the x220, but i'm not sure that i can deal with the low resolution display of the x220

any input that could help me make an informed decision?

1366x768 is acceptable on sub 13" screens

do you want more power and more bulk or less power and less bulk
>>
>>51962867

Yeah, your question was answered on the 3rd and 4th lines.
>>
>>51963113
well, my problem is that my laptop still has to be somewhat powerful, but it's noit im gonna be playing games on my laptop, thats what i have my dekstop for.

the x220 im considering has a 2,7 i7, and 8 gb ram. like, that porbably has all the power that i'll ever need.

with the x220, do you get a "worse" typing experience than with the t420 because of the smaller keyboard?
>>
>>51963359
unless you have ginormous hamhands it shouldn't be a problem
>>
>>51963074
>i'm not sure that i can deal with the low resolution display of the x220

Don't know about the X220 but the screen in my T420 is utter shit.

I much rather have less resolution but better quality.
>>
>>51962474
I'd get it. That isn't a bad price at all
>>
>>51963359
All keyboards are identical and swappable across all T/W/X --10 and --20 generations. The X220 does however feel less sturdy to type on compared to bigger models, particularly in the lower-left corner of the keyboard. It can apparently be mitigated by putting something in the Expresscard slot, but it is definitely noticeable if you don't.
>>
How does the X220i differ from the regular X220? Can I put the screen cover and lid from X220i on an X220?

Hey there X1C3 fag here, well I got the X1C2 as well for testing...
Performance wise... this thing is probably as good as an X220, maybe even less stellar.
Those FN/Media keys wont work on Linux from the X1C2.
Right now I am using Linux Mint.

Is like the LCD dim? I haven't had an X201, but had various X-Series. The WXGA+ X200 had a somewhat dim screen, it was odd indeed.
I wouldn't put it past you if you don''t want to get another ThinkPad.

>>51950050

>>51964430
Yup.
>live in filth and play League of Legends

>X1C3 plays it with constant stutter and big frame skipping

I hadn't used an X220, but its performance is comparable to a T420 which I've used two in the past, those are good.
I don't know how botched the 's' ThinkPads are, T430s seemed pretty robust when it came to performance

Also the main reason why I didn't use them long enough/stress test them is because I'm a laptop flipper, so they are solds.

Whats about the retro thinkpad - are there any news about it ?
And will it even come out ?
>>
>>51964555
Eh, I really think its because of the fan mainly, maybe the ultrabook CPU.
The S230 was absolute crap with its 1.8GHz processor, it stuttered moving the mouse when I upgraded to Windows 10.
Even with Windows 8.1, it performed worse than the Chromebook Pixel.

I haven't had chance to play with any T/W5xx series after the W500.
For all general purposes, the T430 is probably my best bet, X220 IPS if you need the 6 row keyboard, T420 if its 'too small screen'

>X300 best keyboard feel since the C2D era
>A31p best speakers for a ThinkPad
>14" 4:3 T60 most robust design

By the way, if you guys come across any PowerPC/800 series ThinkPads, they are worth $200+ turning on at the moment.

>>
>>51965840
They are sold for a pretty penny because of the flagship status for ThinkPads.

In terms of build quality I liked the Chromebook Pixel more, maybe its because 'muh aluminum' the display ratio is awesome although it is glossy, typing did feel a lot better.
But an X1C has a trackpoint which I cannot go without, sometimes the touchpad bothers me, my palms will touch the touchpad and move the mouse
Im pretty sure I disabled touchpad on bios and it still works lol

X1C2 has the screwed up keyboard layout, I laugh when I use it.

HD+ panel isn't too great, go IPS if its available, its mainly the reason why I am using this damn thing, if not, I'd use my X300 though it is sluggish for almost all tasks now.
Muh battery life, I get about 8 hours of use in linux, at least its what it seems to be.

Mx100 in my t410 samsung 850evo in my x230.

The 850evo is faster and much more power efficient at the moment. The mx100 was good value when I bought it but is outdated now, mx200 is supposedly decent. The bx series are okay if you want cheap and reasonably fast storage, random writes are quite bad though (in terms of speed).

I'd get a 850evo atm it barely costs more and is way more energy efficient than most drives. The 256GB is the sweet spot efficiency wise (the more capacity the higher the power Usage).
>>
>>51965956

Is the Chromebook Pixel good enough for a full-featured laptop? I'm looking for something that I can do proper dev work on (so the keyboard/screen matters) on the go. I like my X220, but it's little on the bulky side and the screen's too small for my liking now.

I wouldn't say so.
I didn't do the linux install on that machine, I just used ChromeOS for some shitposting and wordpress.
I don't know how well it performs in a different OS.
That machine does get hot, its cooling is retarded, the X1C has it beat on that at least.
Also it does have surprisingly good speakers for a laptop. Tinny but loud.

You might be able to get away with the i7 64GB model, I had a 16GB unit from 2013.
Dunno how you feel about carrying your work on an SD card, I'd recommend buying of of those tiny USBs.
Still I don't know how it supports Linux, I was not interested in doing that at the time.

In Holland you can't even get an x230 for less than 300 dollar in decent shape. If you look on ebay you might find a 430 for 200 dollars if you are lucky and win an auction (buy now is usually 300 or more) and even then you still have to add shipping costs.

So yes, you might find one cheap but it is more of an exception than rule. I watch local advertising website every other day and ebay as well.

I'm looking for a T420 and the best deal I can see right now is 250 euros for a non-optimus T420 with the 1600x900 screen but I have no idea what the condition of the device is, although the seller offers three months of warranty on the thing.

They have a couple of them available, I'll just shoot a message on the quality of the hardware, I really don't want dead pixels and other bullshit for the premium they cost.

I got a x230 from Sweden like new with a 9-cell for 230€ (plus 20€ shipping).

>>

The problem is that a lot of companies lease thinkpads in holland so the companies leasing them try to sell them off after a few years. It is near impossible to find thinkpads in regular shops here, nearly everything is consumer grade shit. The new thinkpads suck ass.

Depends on the country. In USA, for that price, an i3, 4 gigs, and 1366x768 is just awful, personally I'd find it unusable.

For example a very quick ebay search finds me a good condition HP EliteBook 8560p with an i5-2520m, 1600 x 900, 8 gigs of ram, dedicated AMD 6470M graphics, and a 256 gig SSD for the exact same price.

Spent the day revisiting the t61p and x200. Using gnome classic on both. Both machines are now smoother and just as fast as my haswell thinkpad yoga 14

Also about the thinkpad yoga: the trackpoint is flat as fuck and much less comfortable and smooth than my old thinkpads. In fact the x200 is straight up objectively more enjoyable to use for browsing the Internet and shit. How can I fix this? Where can I get an old type thick trackpoint that will fit the smaller size of the newer devices?
>>
I've been cleaning my thinkpads with a damp rag soaked with 50% rubbing alcohol.
Does this destroy the finish in the long term?
Because the short term results are great, it disinfects and de-grimes the keyboard in 1 step.

in windows go to power options, change advanced power settings, and set max CPU usage to 99%. it will disallow turbo boost.

nah youre fine

Is it a bad idea to get a new t540p? I like thinkpads, but I want a new laptop with good specs.

Wow, they put down 4GB RAM in their description, but under search terms they put 8GB RAM...
Thats fucking overpriced then, it best come with a warranty for that price, and I'd expect a battery with less than 40 cycles and at least 90% Wh life from normal capacity
>>
>>51973917
Yeah because the *40 series aren't new. They're two years old
Get something *50 or *60 now that they're coming out

Wait for the p50s or the T560

Nice meme
The t450s is God tier and the 2016 catalog is fucking incredible, especially the new carbon and workstation options

new XPS's are shit.

You could get an ATI V5250 but you will need to mobo swap.
I think an Intel T7600 is your best bet.
Then you could do a W500 heatsink swap, you'll be limited to 3GB RAM though, regardless of what you read the chipset and see from datasheets.

Thanks anon; I'll wait until those come out to decide.

I'm actually typing on one right now and this is actually pretty nice. I have a T420 that I have for work and I can say that the keyboard on this one has a more tactile feeling compared to the mushy keyboard on the T420.

Is USD260 a good price for a x220 with 160 gig ssd?

Is jewegg alright? I'm new to this whole buying used laptops online thing
>>

I've had 0 experience buying a ThinkPad from NewEgg but I would imagine as long as the return policy is decent. [ie a certain number of days to evaluate and you don't have to pay shipping to return for any reason]. Then the risk is relatively low. these things hold up pretty well over time as my company uses them for our computers.

Thanks I just want a laptop for watching twitch and shitposting but I don't want to open up a package and find a broken piece of shit inside

Can't decide which to buy.
x220 vs x220t
Which is better and why?
>>
When upgrading the RAM on a x220, the specs sheet says max ram is 8GB, how are people using 16 GB, custom BIOS update?
>>
>>51975934
stock bios
lots of manufactures say that it's 8 gigs max, but all sandy bridge cpus support 8 gigs per slot
>>
>>51975274
x220t battery is worse and you have one potentially wobbly hinge, but you're guaranteed an IPS panel.

If you're not going to legitimately use the touch panel (get the pen-enabled one or don't bother), then just get a normal x220.

AFAIK ozone machine is the only way to remove cigarette smell.
V effective though, I got a used couch that reeked for free, rented an ozone machine for 24 hours for ~$50, the couch had zero odor afterward.
You could check with an equipment renter- maybe since your stinky item is portable, maybe you can cut some kind of deal.
Hotels usually have the machine as well, if you happen to travel with the thing. A good hotel might try to accommodate.

Alright, two questions:

For those of you that have a Thinkpad X220 or something of similar size what sleeve/case do you guys prefer? (I'll eventually get a 9-cell so It'll have to hold that too)

Is there a way to purchase just the bottom plastic base of a thinkpad? My X220 recently got it's bottom-left corner broken off during travel (which is why I want a case). The plastic missing is right near the lower-right corner of the expresscard slot.

thanks guys

Running arch (antergos)
So far knocking down each bug one by one.
Wow linux is much faster than Windows 10.

Anyways, I need help with this one.
My T420 is not mounting/recognizing the express card to usb 3.0 adapter I bought. No Flash drives nor usb mouses work on the card. However, it powers the devices.

Anyways here's the link:

How do I fix?
