Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

x230 i7/IPS/SSD/classic kbd swap reporting

So far not too bad.

Fn+F8/F9 are the screen brightness controls, I finally figured out tonight.
>>
Hey guys, I need a quick opinion. I am stalking the tech malls und Singapore for a used think pad as of right now.

I found a x230 for the equivalent of 320 dollars. All of them look somewhat worn, this one is the best looking though. Apparently no ips though.

Then I got a x201 from a slightly shadier guy for only 140 dollars.

I don't mind the keyboard. Since the 230 is newer it seems to be the better choice right?

I looked at the wiki and will check the bios lock.. Anything else you guys would recommend to check?

Thanks
>>

Easy swap? I've got an IPS coming from ebay for my x230.
>>
Do any of the thinkpads (particularly W) handle three additional monitors?
>>
>>51909828
X230 prices are ripoff af in sg. They're getting lower, but make no sense value-wise.

Buy X220. They're like S$280.
>>

So i currently have a Thinkpad T410 which I've been using since january. I like it so much that I'm considering upgrading to a X240.

I'm curious what the actual batter life of these laptops is. My T410 can do a good 3 hours on normal usage with the current battery (bought a brand new battery in march).

I was thinking to sell my tablet and my T410 to make way for a X240.

Can buy a X240 for about 400 - 500 euros (fucking retarded EU prices so no cheap thinkpads here). Should I do it? I barely use my tablet since I got my T410.

Singapork here, and you're going to be flat out of luck looking for thinkpads at non gouged prices at tech malls because we only have 2 of them with one famous for being shady and the other focused on consumer shit (and is closing down soon)

Your best bet is prowling gumtree or classifieds and lurking little india which have used tech shops hidden around.

>mfw paid SGD$400 for my non IPS X220

Prices here suck. Kill me
>>
Hmm, I need some advice/opinions.
My options are either an x220 for $280 cad or an x230 for $320 cad. The x220 has an IPS screen and the x230 has a samsung LED screen. An IPS screen for the x230 would cost me around 80-100 bucks so that would bring it up to $400 bucks. Should I invest the extra 120 bucks in the x230 because it's newer or should I just settle with the x220.

Oh also another thing to take into consideration is that I already have a 250gb msata ssd, 1tb hdd, and 16gb ram to spare.

I just bought an X230 with i5-3330m, IPS screen and will be adding the RAM (8GB) and SSD (Crucial MX100 256) to it.

You think I will experience a big upgrade coming from a T410? Didn't really need a new one myself but my GF needs a new laptop so she's getting my old T410. Only downside on the X230 was a crack in the corner but if it annoys me too much ill just buy a new cover (its on the lid).

Nice, I already have my SSD and extra RAM ready to go into the X230. Now there's hoping it's not supervisor locked (so i don't have to short the EEPROM).

What are the chances generally of a thinkpad being supervisor locked anyway? My T410 was a blind buy and it had no supervisor. I'm going to take the 230 apart regardless since I always apply new thermal paste and clean out all of the dust (made a huge difference in temps for my T410).

>>
>>51915057

>>51915150
My thinkpad came with a supervisor option, but it hadn't been configured, so I just disabled it.
>>
>>51915280
Ah ok, my T410 had the option as well but not configured.

I'm buying it from a trustworthy buyer with good reviews so I assume it's safe. He even offered me to put in an SSD (which would be impossible with a supervisor locked laptop) so i guess it's oke.
>>
>>51915075
To be honest, its probably best to check the ThinkPad Forum, there is a board, a few guides for specific OSX/ThinkPad and topics about it.

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=32

>>51915150
You could always ask about it and when checking the bios if it prompts for the password, it would prompt for it.

So long as you don't remove the CMOS battery you should be OK.
When buying from the seller, just ask them if they booted off a CD or USB when they installed the OS, most likely it won't be locked if they did. However if they had to install it on another laptop then swap HDDs, then its probably locked.

>>51915061

Here's a link to the announcement back in 2010.

"SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 8, 2010 – AMD, Dell, Intel Corporation, Lenovo, Samsung Electronics LCD Business and LG Display today announced intentions to accelerate adoption of scalable and lower power digital interfaces such as DisplayPort and High-Definition Multimedia Interface® (HDMI) into the PC.

Intel and AMD expect that analog display outputs such as Video Graphics Array (VGA) and the low voltage differential signaling technology (LVDS) panel interface would no longer be supported in their product lines by 2015. HDMI has increasingly been included in new PCs for easy connection to consumer electronics devices. DisplayPort is expected to become the single PC digital display output for embedded flat panels, PC monitors and projectors."

Gonna be completely honest

I'm terrified of death. I honest to God don't want to know what is on the other side. I'm more scared of that than anything else.

Like, nightmares n shit. I don't know why. I know it is irrational. It's mostly the fact that it is unknown and there isn't a way of knowing what is there. But it sucks. I hope that this isn't the only chance at life one is given. Because that sucks.

WHAT THE FUCK.

Hey /g/,
I'm exhausted and pissed from my T420.
It's a piece of shit; I just recently got the laptop.
>great cooling design they said
>quiet they said
>cooler than the elitebooks they said

It all begins when I was looking for a laptop, and I wanted something with discrete graphics for cad and light gaming . /g/ recommended the t420, so found and won an auction on ebay.
$133 -i5 2520m - nvs 4200 -500gb- 1600x900
Decent laptop for a good price.
It seemed fast, especially since of the ssd and 12 gb I upgraded myself. Works perfectly for Web browsing and other media.

However, soon after I noticed some hot air coming out of the vents. Decided to check temps, and I was hitting 80°c just by Web browsing (~30% load). I continued to test and found that that in took a while for it to cool down at idle, which was around 55°. Every bit of load this laptop experiences, the temps shoot up 20° or more. Full load was ridiculous, with it throttling to 800MHz at 97°, and gaming was meh, with throttling at the same temperature but between 1-2GHz

So I thought, hmmm it must be a thermal compound and dust issue. 2 hours later and quarter tube of artic silver 5 gone, compressed air dusting, and microfiber cloth wiping thermal grease, I get better results but still atrocious results. Full load is 97°c at 2.5GHz, and slowly drops to around 2GHz, gaming has similiar temperatures, but frequencies all over the place, from 2 - 3.2ghz, and idle is much improved, idling at 45°-50°, but still shit.

I also bent the GPU heatsink and latch to put more pressure on the gpu, and tightened the screws well.

Also, the heat sink is small and pathetic

Anyways,
These are not good temps. Is their any heatsink mod?
Honestly for the price I will just say fuck it, and let the piece of shit engulf itself in heat.

Nothing. Just like when you go to sleep and not dream.

I'm not scared of what comes after but just that I don't want to screw up my one chance at everything. It really sucks that everything is temporary. I really want to live for centuries and see where we end up.

>>
>>51925659
Eternal nothing would be something to fear if you could actually experience it. Kinda like being in limbo. But you won't experience it at all.

At 23, I fear death, but I'm sure if I live till 60-70, I'll probably welcome the peace.
>>
>>51925699
Yeah, 22, same thinking. Don't want to die. Just started life, really. It would be awesome to live for centuries and see where humanity goes.
>>
>>51925606
I don't see the issue. Let it run hot. Unless something breaks or you get sterilised, it's not an issue. The heatsink itself isn't too small for integrated use and really it's your fault for not heeding the warnings perpetuated for the last 5 years

Should've gone for a T520 if cooling was that important to you. Turning off Turbo Boost should help with your load temperatures without making any noticeable change to performance. Use TPFC if you aren't already and set the fan to 7 when you're playing vidya, and dxtory or some similar program to cap framerates in games that don't provide the option themselves. No sense in running stuff at 300 FPS when the monitor is only 60hz. Should be able to keep your temps around 80c and below. Still toasty, but 14" Thinkpads don't have nearly as good cooling as 15" ones so you can't expect miracles.
>>
Could someone tell me what batteries will get me the best battery life on a T420s. Can you get a 9-cell battery for the T420s or is the 6-cell the biggest? Then a 3-cell bay battery?
>>
>>51927065
The 6 cell is the biggest, it's also smaller than the regular T420 6 cell due to space constraints. 48Wh vs 60Wh. And yes there's the bay and slice batteries. Just beware that those drain to 0% before the system switches over so the constant full cycling may or may not have a serious effect on lifespan. Although this slice here is doing alright, pulled 3 years and still usable
>>
>>51927065
Main battery is only up to 6cell. You might be able to get a slice battery for it? Not sure. Ultrabay batteries are crap.

basically my current battery gets around 90 minutes. what is the max battery life i could get on this model?
>>
Can I still get T420s IPS replacement kits? My screen is literally cancer.
>>
>>51925606
>/g/ recommended the t420
Because /g/ is dumb as a sack of rocks sometimes. The only thing that makes T420 better than T520 is the community support. Ivy Bridge support through custom BIOS, better screens through custom kits to fit them.
If you're into this, you have reason to get a T420.

If not, T/W520 offers miles better cooling performance, and the option for a better screen from the factory meaning it's far easier to get your hands on said screen if your model doesn't already have one.

>B-b-but the 520 is heavier and bigger !

Normal 15.6" laptops maybe, but 15.6" Thinkpads are goddamn behemoths. I have an X220, T420, and T510 and the T420 feels like a closer relative to the X220 than it does to the T510. That thing is enormous. Rest of your points are totally valid though, that T510 may be huge but it runs cool and the screen is beautiful, even though it's not 1080p it still eats my T420's screen for breakfast.

hi guys, give me some ideas for performance/gaymen testing, I just got new RAM for my X220 and I got a mixed feeling about it...
more info: I have 1.40 Bios mod from http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/x220-custom-bios-1-40-release.782077/ and got a little excited about the RAM unlock part, among other things. So I got myself some 2x 4GB 1866MHz Kingston sticks (couldn't get any batter), and even thou I know thinkpads aren't gaymen nor HD3K is something uber, I heard that HD3K performance is dependant on RAM bandwidth (that accually make sense, since it shares system memory). Now, I installed NFSU2, and the results got me thinking, like, either I did something wrong (on technical/testing level) or 1866MHz is a meme, cuz here's what I got:

2015-12-18 09:28:00 - speed2 - 6GB Mixed
Frames: 4056 - Time: 114474ms - Avg: 35.432 - Min: 21 - Max: 52
2015-12-18 09:34:31 - speed2 - 4GB Single

2015-12-18 09:51:28 - speed2 - 8GB Dual, bios auto, 1866mhz
Frames: 3382 - Time: 114255ms - Avg: 29.600 - Min: 23 - Max: 40
2015-12-18 10:02:47 - speed2 - 8GB Dual, bios auto, 1866mhz take two
Frames: 3955 - Time: 131118ms - Avg: 30.164 - Min: 22 - Max: 39
2015-12-18 10:10:37 - speed2 - 8GB Dual, bios set to 1067mhz
Frames: 4053 - Time: 114365ms - Avg: 35.439 - Min: 29 - Max: 49
2015-12-18 10:16:32 - speed2 - 8GB Dual, bios set to 1333mhz
Frames: 4050 - Time: 113116ms - Avg: 35.804 - Min: 29 - Max: 52
2015-12-18 10:21:37 - speed2 - 8GB Dual, bios set to 1600mhz
Frames: 3843 - Time: 109840ms - Avg: 34.987 - Min: 29 - Max: 49
2015-12-18 10:27:17 - speed2 - 8GB Dual, bios set to 1867mhz
Frames: 3684 - Time: 122992ms - Avg: 29.953 - Min: 21 - Max: 45

So, my question is: what else do you want me to test? And how specific? (I have 2x2gb 1x4gb sticks; HT, Turbo Boost - on/off, anything else?)
>>
>>51927392
It really doesn't make much difference. HD 3000 is too shit to be useful even with the fastest RAM you can throw at it.
>>
>>51927392
Faster RAM is a meme anyways. Any well-designed program should be utilizing memory cache so minor improvements in the memory clock has almost no benefits.
>>
>>51927135
Depends on how badly the battery is doing to get only 1.5 hours. Assuming it's a fresh battery (which it isn't), you're looking at 5 hours total with the bay and slice. Assuming it's about 50% degraded which isn't too unreasonable for an on the go scenario of light-medium use and assuming it's pretty old, you're looking at about 10 or so hours with all 3 batteries taped on. Just bear in mind the slice battery adds a half kilo and tilt to the machine so in the short term, a fresh main battery would bring peace of mind, even if you're only going to get 3-5 hours out of it. Whether you get some chink shit, pay out the ass for lenovo or get lucky finding a legit lenovo on the cheap is up to you
Oh and the bay battery is a tiny 30Wh, large relative to the T420s battery, but half the size of a "proper" 6 cell, or 1/3 of a 9 cell (or slice)
>>
>>51912429
Then tell me how to look.

Whats the best thinkpad for battery life thats under $500?

Not Thinkpad, but this should apply. Just bought a Latitude E6330:
i5 3rd gen
8GB RAM
Stock 250GB HDD, whatev
Preloaded with Win7, might make the jump to 10
Best part is I got it from a MAR for only two hunnerts, on a sweet Cyber Monday sale. With them HD Graphics 3000, I'm hoping to maybe even run New Vegas, with some graphics modding.

Speaking of, is it worth it to run Win10 on laptops like these? I'm already gonna wait till they iron out the kinks to upgrade, but I'm paranoid my performance is gonna take a hit. And wanting to play games, I'm gonna need basically all the performance I can squeeze out.

Also, does anyone know if there's anything weird you have to do in Win10 to get games to work properly? Like in 7, you have to go in to like every executable and check "Run as administrator," because the Program Files folder is protected. Quirks like that.
>>
>>51928299
>With them HD Graphics 3000, I'm hoping to maybe even run New Vegas, with some graphics modding.
consider your hopes dashed. if you want gay men so bad, get an egpu

do not switch to win10, it's shit
>>
>>51928332
Faaaaaack.

Still though, I got Fo3 to run decently on a shitty, banged up 7 year old Compaq that's notorious for cooling problems. As long as I didn't get gangraped with enemies, the graphics did aight. I'm thinkin I can make do with the Latitude.

Anyway, I only need it to play old games to keep me entertained till I get a desktop built. That's where I'm planning on doing vidya. I only really need it to run Matlab for school, some old games woulda been a bonus. Plus I don't know if there are even any options for eGPUs with the Latitude.

I can't seem to find any specs on the drawing side of things, just a review criticising the pressure sensitivity but that might be due to poor pressure curve configuration.

i can get a thinkpad t420 (i5 - 4gb ram), x220i (i3 - 4gb ram) OR a HP 8440p (i7 vpro - 4gb ram) elitebook , they are all relatively the same price, im looking for the best battery life, but the 8440p comes with 1600x900, although my priority is battery life, none of them come with extended batteries, however i can order one from ebay and live with the internal for a week or so.
also as a side option, there is an x61s available for less than half the price of these laptops and i can buy an ssd + 4gb ram to throw in (currently 100gb hdd and 1gb ram), that would probably end up costing just shy of what i would spend buying one of the thinkpads or elitebook that i mentioned above.

i think ill dive for the t420, since its in better condition than the x220 and it costs 60$ less, and im sure a nice 9cell or 6cell will keep it up, but the 1600x900 and i7 on the hp look nice too, however as stated, it will probably be a house-fire and battery killer which isnt what i want...
>>
>>51931453
heres the t420 im looking at, im gonna head out to the local store tomorrow to have a look at it! :)

Seems like there's no fix for this. Damn.
>>
sup /tpg/, i found a x220 with 250gb hdd and 4gb ram and found a x220 with 320gb hdd and 8gb ram for 100$ more, is it worth the extra 99$

>>51931598
No.

>T440
>upgrade over T420
Not with those ULV Haslells they aren't. I'm pretty sure the HD 4400 iGPU is worse than the dGPU in the T420, too. You have to get a T440p to get any specs worth a damn in the --40 generation.
>>
>>51931673
well no shit integrated graphics are going to fucking suck against a dedicated gpu
>>
>>51931673
So in that case I'll hang onto my T420

Is there any new Thinkpad worthy of moving up to?
>>
>>51931885
Like I said, there's the T440p. Full voltage Haswells (even quadcore options) and a GT 730m GPU, with actual decent screen options to boot. If you really need better specs, that's where I'd go. Just remember to budget an extra $30 or however much it costs to buy a T450 trackpad since the --40 one is literally unusable.

Anyone bought this? Are the laptops from them clean, without dead pixels, etc? Feel like getting one for Christmas, but only if everything checks out.

Apparently they ship with upgraded internals (RAM/SSD/HDD/WiFi), clean thermal paste and GNU/Linux pre-installed, along with a free BIOS, which is funded by them.

Any experiences with this? It would be my first thinkpad ;_;.
>>
>>51933129
Mind you, I also have the chance to get a mint T440 with i5 4300U, SSD and HD+ LED for about the same price.

...should I before someone else gets it?
>>
where can i get a quality replacement battery for a t60?
>>
Thoughts on the T450s? Never owned a Thinkpad before but I need a laptop that's durable and can handle regular travel. Never would have considered a Thinkpad until the salesman in Microcenter recommended it because of the roll cage and keyboard drain. I hadn't heard of those features anywhere else.

Just wish I could get an HDMI port rather than VGA.

you should neck yourself for even wanting to buy that shit

question for everyone that changed their bumpers on X220T: where did you buy and how expensive it was?
even thou it's almost impossible to find I still feel like i've been jewed for paying 35€ for piece of plastic (10€ just for shipping), but you gotta love them display stoppers

>he doesn't use a mouse on his workstation

>>51933595
Get a REGULAR T420 that isn't stupidly expensive with the nice screen and the dGPU. Don't be a cuck
>>
>>51934288
If you can get one cheap, its good. Don't spend too much on a computer that will be abused during travel
>>
I'm looking for something small to replace my ipad...

What do you guys think about the x140e?
>>
>>51934804
Well, what do you want? I like my trackpad for my Japanese porn games. My clitmouse (trackpoint) is too sensitive for regular porn game usage
>>
>>51934804
Also, I'm the guy you replied to, not the guy that I was questioning his complaints over a trackpad
>>
>>51935183
AMD APU
It's garbage. Get an X220/X230 with at least an i5

>replace iPad
Get an Android tablet then. If you're replacing a tablet, get a tablet. If you want an actual computer that will get shit done, get what I've described. Try to snag their convertible versions with the pen and multi touch displays
>>
>>51931359
Your keyboard is disgusting

In terms of construction, layout and the oily shit all over it
>>
>>51931673
I have a work-issued T440 with the i3 processor in it. The thing is slower, both in terms of single and multi-thread performance, than the lowly i5-520M in my T410s, which is about 4 years older. Simply pathetic.
>>
>>51935244
The thinkpad would be complimentary to my macbook pro 15"

I want something lightweight for mail, browsing, some programming and sshing.

Are there any recommended "mods" for the x220/x230?

Hey guys,

I have a factory new T450 with an broadwell i3 iddling at 43-45 C. This is my first laptop in like 10 years and I'm used to my clean and well-ventilated desktop iddling at 32 C.

Is my laptop toasting the fuck up?
>>
>>51935416
>macbook
Yeah, that's horrid. Either get a tablet or a cell phone to compliment it. Why would you want two laptops? For that, get a desktop and sell the macbook and buy a Thinkpad, or just keep the macbook and use that for your lightweight stuff. Trust me, no "lightweight" laptop will be better for eating shit than a tablet or a cell phone, which are pure media consumption devices.
>>
>>51935516
I would definitely say that's high. My T440s idles at just above room temp

Is an ssd/hdd hybrid a horrible idea? I was just going to buy a 500gb SSD for my x200 but the idea of a 1TB drive in my little thinkpad is making my dick hard.

>>51936516
Good job.
Hybrid Drives have higher failure rates than both regular hard drives and ssd
>>
I've noticed that my battery doesn't fully charge anymore.

Even in the power manager, it says that the max charge is 84%, yet my actual charge is never higher than 55-65%. Is this a common issue on the X200?

I've tried taking the battery out and pressing the power button, but that didn't work.

I recently upgraded my RAM and I'm noticing that I'm getting some stuttering here and there in games despite having fairly good ping.

Is it possible that the RAM isn't seated correctly? I have a T420 and instead of using 1333Mhz I used 1600Mhz, would that account for it?

I went from 4gb to 16gb, no other problems anywhere else.

Thanks guy by the way, I fell for the meme and couldn't be happier though.

After installing a new keyboard on my thinkpad, I am suddenly getting random freezing on my thinkpad. what the fuck is going on here?

I'm using a dell xps m140 as an always-on print center.

Is there any utility similar to tlp that will let me set charge thresholds? It gets plugged in (and left on) basically 24-7 so I just took the battery out.

It would be nice to be able to leave the battery in there.

>>
>>51937438
they're trying to get it off the ground at Lenovo but are having problems finding a good screen for it last time I heard. I don't have a source.

Have a bad feeling it's going to get scrapped since it's going to be expensive for Chinkovo to recreate manufacturing to meet the old style of the Thinkpad
>>
So no retro Thinkpad
>>
>>51932857
>>51934804
The --40 trackpad has no physical trackpoint buttons. They brought them back for the --50 generation and that trackpad is the same shape so you can swap it on to make --40 Thinkpads usable again. Still no physical buttons for the trackpad itself, though. P50 has them, but that thing starts at like $2000 with the most basic configuration.
>>
>>51939350
Maybe end of next year, still sourcing a screen.

>>51937451
Which model?
Maybe you got a bad keyboard, possible reseating or something is being contacted on the motherboard.

>>51937256
It might be bad, idk but if you get a BSoD it might have a bad sector or something.

>>51931885
T430 mang
Maybe a W series if you want firepower, otherwise most new Haslel and Broadlel machines are more about ultrabookness nao.

I want to buy a ThinkPad just as a linux machine.
I don't want a chiclet keyboard and I want it to be relatively small.

I thinking a X201 or X220, and I want to keep the price low. Is the X220 worth the extra £50?

Also, have the recently done a laptop without the trackpad? I had a thinkpad many many years ago without one, and it was brilliant.
>>
>>51939851
X201 is the most recent model with a no trackpad option.
>>
>>51939935
All the X201's I've found have trackpads.

If I've got to have one that's fine, I just want to know if the X220 is worth the extra money.
>>
>>51939851

My x200 only has a trackpoint. I'm using it right now.
>>
>>51939851
>I had a thinkpad many many years ago without one, and it was brilliant.

How?

Can't you just disable it or simply not use it?
>>

Haha, Windows was the culprit.

Arch (actually antergos because arch takes a while to set up, I've done a full Arch install before don't worry) gets me much lower temps. Most likely due to frequency scaling and how light weight it is (Using xfce).
Temps usually don't go over 85 unless an artificial load. Games run around 75 to 85°C.
Idle is high 30's. Normal load never goes over 60.
Feels good.

>>

You can switch the fn and ctrl keys in the BIOS so that fn acts as the ctrl key and vice versa.

t440s + trackpad swap and 1080p fhd panel worth it then shelling more money out for a t450s? performance gain doesn't seem worth it at all

Anybody got the udev keymapping info/procedure for Linux? I can figure it out but it's going to take me a couple of hours to read all that shit. I have used Linux for a while, this is just something I've never personally fooled with.

If nobody responds, I'll post my results in an infographic in the next thread or two to make it easier for the next anon.
