I've installed a legit copy of Visual Studio 2013, but when I try building a project, I get the following warning and error:
warning MSB8003: Could not find WindowsSDKDir variable from the registry. TargetFrameWork or PlatformToolSet may be set to an invalid version number.

error LNK1104: cannot open file 'kernel32.lib'

I found some older posts on SE that recommended to try repairing with the Visual Studio installer, but that didn't work. Now what the fuck do I do?

I want to get into writing apps. I don't want to do it to make money, I actually have a few apps in mind that I'd like to write simply because they don't exist and I want them to.

Problem is I can't code at all. I've done very basic coding in the past but have long forgotten it.

So where's the best place to start learning? Not just coding in general, but targeted towards apps.
>>
>>51947948
Depends on set you are on learning it.
Google has made a nano degree in making apps for their android phones.

https://www.udacity.com/course/android-developer-nanodegree--nd801

200 dollarydoos a month and you can take it in like 3-6 months. But once youre done, you get a shiny piece of paper from google that says you know how to make apps and that youre google trained.

I might consider an xps 15 if Dell understood that there's maybe there's a chance somebody doesn't want a 4k screen but does want a single m.2 drive and the larger battery. As it stands that's a laptop I'd buy and immediately have to upgrade with basic stuff just to make it serviceable, which I'm not okay with.

I'm a sophomore CS major, and I'm interested in getting involved with/contributing to emulator projects and such. Namely, things like the Citra emulator and what people like smealum do. I'm not entirely sure where to start. I've finished a few courses in computer structure and know my way around a bit of assembly.

Is this feasible at all, or do I need to know a significant amount more than I already do? Is this field more closely aligned with electrical engineering rather than computer science?

I'm mostly trying to pick up a hobby that's relevant to my studies and would be beneficial to others, but it's difficult to figure out since there's no "So You Want to Be the 1337 haxxor Emulator Guru" wikis anywhere.
Thanks.

Hello /g/ I want to ask you about ZIM file formats. Do you know what they are?
On the Android phone, there is an application called Kiwix that allows you to download the entirety of Wikipedia and view it offline.
The information comes packaged in ZIM file formats. So you can navigate through Wikipedia seamlessly and easily. No muss, no fuss.
I'm just wondering if it's possible to create ZIM archive files for other websites. It would be great to view certain websites offline.

I like that it's pretty easily upgradable, my main issue is that they only offer the larger battery on the more expensive versions. cheapest possibility results in me removing the HDD entirely, and replacing the m.2 with something else, and then I'm stuck with either an empty spot where a battery should be, or a future SSD upgrade slot which I have zero interest in ever using because I don't need terabytes of storage on a laptop.

If I was certain I could get one of the 86whr batteries and it would fit as long as I didn't have a hdd installed, I'd consider it again. I really want to get it, but honestly I want to call dell and just ask them to forget the fucking battery and drives and just let me do that part myself because they apparently have no idea what they're doing.
>>
>>51948056
And ram, they fucked that up to desu.

... Do you think dell will just send me a barebones xps 15 with a 1080 screen and the larger battery? I'd shill them forever if they did.

Not unless youre a company buying. And if you were, they'd give you more options so it wouldnt be needed in the first place.

I have a question. my brother has close to no expendable income and im trying to build a PC for him. he currently has a ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 mobo with a (I think) C2D E6400 with 4 gigs of ram and a piece of shit Nvidia card (I -think- it's a GTX430).

Now, im thinking of getting him a q6600 and a new graphics card, but im not sure how well that processor would a) work with the mobo and b) work with his 400 watt PSU (which is a shitty brand so probably more like 350w). also I don't know what gfx card to get. Im guessing it would have to be powered by the mobo itself without any external power needed because the PSU is quite weak. would a 8800 be decent enough to play newish games on low-medium on 720p? he doesn't have a 1080p monitor anyway.

any ideas, /g/entoomen?

oh, all of the parts should be as cheap as possible (read: 20-30$ per part).

tl;dr - what is the best CPU+GPU combo for 60-70$ and will run on a shitty 400w PSU?

thanks.

The linode one for postfix+dovecot+mysql and "iptables essentials" from digitalocean basically.Worked like a charm.

I've got a problem concerning the wireless device in my laptop (Dell Inspiron 5521). Z87 came out with Haswell, Z97 Haswell refresh, and Z170 for Skylake.

Z-series is for overclocking
B- and H- are for non overclocking. Z boards are designed for higher voltage and heat performance.

You may find some H boards that can be forced to OC but avoid those if you want a solid OC.

I like MSI the most, but the top notable brands would be MSI, ASUS, Gigabyte, and a few Asrock boards.

C first, then Java.
You can embed C inside java for performance essential sections. Java isn't always the best at memory management and loops can be a bit dickish.
You can even embed assembly if required, although that can be tricky if you need it to be cross platform.

Not learning purposes per se. I don't want to learn how to program with stabiliser wheels. I'm a full immersion therapy believer.

I meant that learning C first is good because it brings with it a large breadth of information and knowledge.
>>
>>51956451
Information and knowledge are great and all, but lisp is more like learning how to ride a unicycle. It's a completely different way of thinking that gets you prepared to write highly efficient and elegant code.
C teaches you how to write code in a way that a computer can understand it, but Lisp teaches you how to adapt your thinking patterns to the problems that you come up against.
>>
>>51956484
Interesting.

Would you say learning Lisp is generally easier and more forgiving? I want to make sure the first language I learn also teaches me discipline and shapes my way of thinking to approach problems in the most holistic way possible.
>>
>>51956555
I would say that learning C is easier as it's completely logical and simple to follow.
Learning lisp is hard to explain. A lisp expert is more like a guru than a programmer.
>>
>>51956601
I think I'll compromise and go with C.

I feel like learning a lower level language is a better approach than an OOP language, but I also don't want to scare myself away or frustrate myself with something too complex. Maybe after a few more weeks of C, I'll have a look at Lisp and see how it looks then.
>>
>>51956704
Lisp isn't OO, and it isn't complex.
Lisp is in fact one of the simplest forms of programming there is, but the simplicity of the language forces you to create your own high level abstractions out of the few structures you are given.
It's hard, and frustrating, but far more rewarding than C will ever be.

You can install 14.04 by booting it from ISO on disk using the -toram option in grub, then unmounting the HDD and installing from the live environment in memory.
There's instructions on how to do this on the ubuntu wiki.
Doesn't work for 15.04 I'm afraid. They broke something.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2/ISOBoot/Examples

menuentry 'ISO 14.04 ' {
set isofile="/iso/ubuntu-14.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso"
loopback loop (hd0,1)$isofile
linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz.efi boot=casper iso-scan/filename=$isofile noprompt noeject toram
initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz
}

add that to your /etc/grub.d/40_custom, run update-grub, and you should be ready to rock

after you are booted in, unmount your hard drive partitions and you should be ready to rock.

Just make sure you have at least 4GB of RAM installed, and you configure swap before starting the install. It's OK to have the swap partition mounted while installing.
>>
>>51957075

Deluge. Looks ugly but works so well.
>>
>>51957105
Oh, I forgot to mention, set isofile="/iso/ubuntu-14.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso" needs to point to the ISO in disk partition 1. change (hd0,1) to (hd0,X) where X is the partition you put the ISO. There's more info on the page.
