This shit is necessary if you have shaggy carpet.
>>
Over the last 20 years I've built literally hundreds of computers and repaired countless electronic devices and never once gave a single fuck about the ESD meme.
>>
I just touched my wall-radiator a couple of times when I built my computer.
>>
>>51778311
its not a meme if you actually do electrical engineering

for the average /g/ user it is
>>
>>51778311
When I was going to install my SSD my clothes were sticking to me from all the static. I installed it while wearing only my underwear and definitely made sure to use one of those.
>>
Only use it in the fall. If I am doing tech with clothes on.

Fuck the haters.

Why did you buy the placebo instead of an actual ESD safe discharger? Are you some kind of poorfag?

First time builder here, any advice about how not to fuck it up? I'm pretty hyped but scared at the same time, especially about the whole fucking up your CPU placement and bending some pins thing
>>
>>51779003
Chances are, you'll break it. It takes years of experience. My friend broke two i7s because of bent pins.
>>
>>51779003
Don't build on the carpet, if your whole house is carpet build on a table. And watch youtube tutorials.
>>
>>51778311
nope

i make habit to ground myself on the case but that's it

>>
Just work barefoot.
>>
>>51778349
If you weren't somewhat careful to discharge yourself, you probably damaged some percentage of those systems over the years. The reason it isn't as large of a problem as it used to be is due to good design practices by IC designers and system design engineers. Most I/O including IC pins have TVS protection diodes to help keep the CMOS within safe voltage potential.
>>
I just touch my radiator
>>
Wrap it around your dick, and plug the clamp in to the outlet.
>>
>>51779401
On most you can actually pull the clamp off and it has a pin that you can shove into an outlet.
>>
so if i work barefoot naked on the carpet will I still have a risk of discharge
>>
>>51779003
You should get an esd strap. I've ruined 2 mobos from esd and I've been building pcs for 3 years. The 2nd one was 3 days ago. Or just tape your hand to the case

I smiled
>>
>>51778358
Similar technique here, I would always roll up my sleeves and touch with all fingers on the removed side panel made of metal. Although only once in 20 years of handling computer hardware was that useful as just as I was about to touch the metal, a discharge occurred.
Kinda jumped as I was not really expecting it. Didn't feel a thing though.

Those things were created for dealing with things at a component level like CMOS chips and FETs which can be ruined pretty easily by static. They are protected pretty well once they are in the circuit-board which is why motherboards and all that very rarely end up with static damage.
>>
>>51784112
And that's why you need to touch yourself at night. Bitches love statics on the tits.
>>
No I didn't

>>51778311
I live in Cali and the air here has been dry as hell and just FULL of static the last few months, so I have one of these laying around in case I have a box to work on that requires both hands. More often than not, one hand on the case is enough, which is a good thing I've made a habit of, course I'm always arcing on something.
>>
>>51778311
It costs less than a new motherboard.

Buy one and it'll save you all damages from all static electricity.

Keep in mind, most of these circuits still worked most of the time, even with the damage, but were marginal. I've scanned damaged FETs myself--- they still functioned but were off spec, usually with unexplained current leakage.

Don't moonwalk on a carpet while you build your computer.
>>
>>51778311
It used to be necessary back then.

But it's fucking 2015. Proper electronics are protected well enough against that sort of thing. Unless you're tinkering with electronics, soldering shit, or using high precision electronics, it's useless, and even then, I doubt about its utility.

Even chink shit is protected these days for fucks sake.
>>

Go away and take your meme keyboard with you

Bought one for 6 bucks during black friday just because I was buying something else and shipping was free. Not even with my money, since I was building a comp for my younger bro, with the rest of the family paying.

Just because it didn't happen to you during your build doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
And for $4 it's worth the safety net.

when you're just building your own gaming shitbox, it's enough to just ground yourself every once in a while. over here we just touch the prongs at the top and bottom of the schuko masterrace outlet.
when you're building pcs as a service, use that fucking strap, if only to prevent people from accusing you to be careless.

>>51783894
ram is one of the things you should not get esd'd m8
>>
Didn't used to be a meme. Electronics aren't nearly as sensitive now as they were even fifteen years ago.

Where I work we also manufacture our own PCB for some of the hardware we produce.

The assembly area used to have the ESD epoxy floor, bench connected static straps, ESD coatings for the bench tops, etc.

Floor was replaced long ago with conventional flooring, and we don't even bother with the bench connected straps anymore.

Things change, /g/. Doesn't make it meme.
>>
So I can just do that PSU touching thing and I won't housefire?
>>
>>51778311
My school did.
I once got sent out the classroom for not wearing one of these.
I literally said that those things are for retarded cunts who can't resist to touch buzzing, glowing, hot, sparky bits.

NOPE.

Fucking 200A worth of the dirtiest chinese plastic

>>51778311
Or you could literally touch anything metal beforehand.
>>
>>51784079
A discharge probably occurred every time you touched metal. It was just that 19 out of the 20 times you discharged before you had enough potential difference to feel the discharge. Most people don't feel static shocks weaker than 3000V, so 19 out of the 20 times you could have been discharging at 2000V and never noticed.
>>
I didn't.

Just don't be a tard and ground yourself with something metal. I've done plenty of builds and never had an issue.
>>
>>51780075
Yes. Any time you have friction between two objects you risk building significant potential difference. More friction = more trading electrons, and carpets have a lot of surface area, so they generate a lot of friction. Having a high humidity environment will help to quickly normalize the difference in charge you generate, though, not as quickly as just touching some metal

>>

not me, I was doing computer shit long before I knew those things existed. I was aware of the issues static could cause though, so I always worked on them with the case in my lap and my forearms resting on the case

Be gentle, don't just slam it in there. I built my first PC about 2 years back, and I spent about 20 mins just making sure the processor was lined up and secure, and to my amazement it booted without error first try. Also kinda obvious but make sure the processor socket matches the mb socket before you order anything.
