These are just a meme /g/? You surely don't sacrifice your writes and space for these things?
>>
The only people that think they're not worthwhile are children without a source of income. Remember like 10 years ago when upgrading your RAM was the best thing you could do for your PC? Now it's upgrading to SSD.
>>

isn't that an old meme now already? Recent SSDs don't have this problem I heard.

It's not a problem that is just going to disappear as it's an inherent flaw of the underlying technology, but the endurance of many drives is generally high enough to make it a non-issue for 99.9% of people. For the remaining .1% you have enterprise class SSD's.

Come on it's like you faggots don't even try. I've got the 500GB Samsung EVO 850 for my OS/applications/games and two WD Blues in RAID 1 for my data. I have Windows set up to download everything to my E: drive so I don't download anything directly on to my SSD. The way I see it if my SSD fails, whatever, I can just replace it and reinstall Windows, I won't lose anything of importance. My data is where I'm concerned. That's why I've got my HDDs in RAID 1. If one fails I still have the second.

And how is RAID not a back up solution? I'd understand you're issue if I was talking about RAID5 or something but I'm talking RAID1. Mirroring drives. As the name says, you make your OS think that 2-4GB of that RAM is actually storage, like another small HDD in your machine.

Then you can put OS/browser/whatever on that 'drive' and every read/write to those 4GB are lightning fast.
>>
>>51788688
Download softperfect ramdisk
you choose x GB of ram and it will appear as a standard disk.
But you lose the content if you dont back it up before rebooting
>>
>>51788688
yes, you can turn a part of your RAM into a drive.
When you boot your computer, the drive will be loaded into the RAM, and when you shut down, it will get written back on the SSD/HDD.
For example, you can make a 8GB RAMDisk. 50% of your ram will be in use then, but you will get a 8GB drive which let's you install or store whatever you want on it, and it will be fast as lightning.

So the manufacturers say, but I don't take chances. /var goes on a HD, and /tmp goes in tmpfs usually(if not it goes on the HD too). I'd put /home, swap if I used any, and with OpenBSD, /altroot, and /pkg-cache on the HD anyway so it's not like I wouldn't already be partitioning across multiple disks anyway.

Windows requires swap no matter what. For any sensible OS, if it's just your home desktop the only reason you'd need swap under most circumstances is if you used hibernation/sleep for some reason. Other than that it's probably always going to just be wasted space.

Yeah, well... Apple has been known to buy the shittiest components for their Macbooks... like shitty reject TLC NAND Samsung SSDs.

No. No, there's really not an existing word or concept that fully describes a lot of the people around here. Sure 'retard,' 'faggot' or even 'man-child' gives you an idea of just who you're dealing with but it's like describing the Mona Lisa as a doodle.

But it's pretty laughable to think people are still trying to argue against SSDs. Couple years ago you would have to worry about writes but now it dun matter.

Heck I can't even make it to 200TB at this rate while the endurance test SSD shills are saying 750TB+ with drives reaching PBs.

I keep an SSD for OS/some gaymen, HDD for data.

People who say there's no difference are trolling or never used one. IMO best computer purchase I've made on par with a second (and eventually third) monitor.
>>
If SSDs are a meme, they are the best fucking meme ever. I bought a 256GB ssd 3 years ago and fresh installed windows 7 onto it. Son of a bitch booted up to desktop in under 12 seconds. Windows detected it as 253GB of total space. Today, same exact stats, under 12 second boot and 253GB of total space.
>>
>get a cheap SSD
>benchmark it on my desktop
>caps out at 15MB/s read and write
>mechanical drives are just fine at a bit over 115 MB/s

>disk benchmark refuses to run, but as far as I can tell, the drive works as fast as it should
>>

What ssd was it?
>>
>>51798241
A cheap-ass PNY Optima I'd gotten for $40. I'm waiting until I can afford a Samsung EVO and then a 2TB mechanical and then all I have to do is figure out how I'll be transferring my shit over. And hopefully those drives won't run like ass for no discernible reason.
>>
>>51785564
Since meme does not mean "Things I don't like", no.

Amazon has a used samsung ssd for 10 dollars.
Get one for swap, one for temp.
>>
>>51786097
Anyone sane would be backing up their data.
Anyway, I've only had one ssd fail me, and I got in the second generation, and have something like 10 or so now, and I use them all.
I've had hdds fail every year or so, until I started phasing them out.
>>
>>51787223
>>51787154
>>51787177
>>51787262

Also, who cares if it fails?
You've got everything backed up with git, I promise you, the amount of time you will save diffing, grepping, and nearly every programming related task, which is often heavily disk tied, will more than pay for even buying a new disk every year, which won't happen.
>>
I really don't like the current meme of calling everything a meme. And fuck you OP SSDs are the biggest single upgrade you can make to existing hardware
>>
>>51786772
Even 50GB a day isn't enough.

The last SSD "death stress test" that I read tested like 6 mainstream models from 2013, the 840 EVO died first at like 750TB written, with like 3 models making it past 1 PB.

Even at 50GB a day, that's still somewhere around 15000+ days to reach that 750GTB mark. That is 41 fucking years.

People need to stop pussin' out and just using their fucking SSDs. It is there to make your computing faster, empty space is wasted space.

Reminder to use HDtune for benchmarking.
Crystaldisk doesn't give you a realistic reading.
Damn thing didn't even notice the slowing down problem that my Samshits had.

Can't wait till the prices start coming down on the 1TB drives.
The moment the prices drop down to near 250$ I'm getting one.
I bet the prices are going to fall like a rock during the next year, so many new players entering the markets.
>>
>>51801552
Pretty much.
Keep your backups, and enjoy the speed.
When it dies, get a new one that's twice the size, for the same price.

Haven't actually had one die yet, but I've gone from 60 gig, to 120 gig, to 256 gig, and now 512 gig ssd, it's pretty nice.

If you get a recent drive it isn't an issue. I just visited Micron's fab in Manassas and they guarantee readability on all their flash products out to 10 years now. They basically abuse the shit out of the device and inspect the gate degradation to extrapolate out with a certain error margin.
