>/g/ Approved brands:

* Nexus because of updates, unlocked to carriers, and good value
* Samsung because of pure performance even despite touchwiz, also best cameras
* Motorola for being near stock, good quality. Customer support isn't what it was.
* LG for still offering removable batteries and SD card slots
* Oneplus if you want decent phones, but be aware they have a bad reputation for support
* Sony for offering good performing phones, great quality, dev support. Not so available in the US.

Looking to get my first smartphone (been using old ass phones for the last few years) and was thinking on spending up to 200€, any good suggestions?
I'm from Portugal but wouldn't mind shipping from outside

also my Courrier is offering me a Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 for 130€ because I've been using them for over 10 years, but I have no idea if that phone's any good, nor if it's a good price for it

LG G3 has been a great phone for the year I had it, but the Battery has always been an issue, and now it's even worse. I live in the Northeast US, and according to PCMag, Verizon has the best service, followed by T-Mobile. I currently have Verizon, and am tempted to get an iPhone because I never actually had one, but the price is steep

I bought one of the $10 Verizon Moto E (LTE, 2015) from Best Buy on Black Friday. I've been messing around with it since it was delivered on Tuesday.

Thing is way more useful than I anticipated. I thought it would be a laggy POS, but it's actually pretty smooth. The biggest downside is the lack of internal storage.

Too bad it probably won't get Marshmallow, but at least I can use it on Verizon or any GSM MVNO.

Anyone have the one plus x on T-mobile?
is it still worth buying even though its missing band 12?

If not whats a good phone around that price range for T-mobile?
>>
does anyone with a moto /g/ have marshmallow yet?
>>
How's the OPX in Canada? Rogers specifically and in the Toronto area?
>>
>>51674753
Do they still have that deal? I'm pretty sure they don't but a man can dream.
>>51674761
Reasons why I don't use iphones:
-Very Simple Interface for any user
-Locked Down OS
-Cannot play certain files on the phone itself (no torrenting music albums and playing them on the same device)
- Jailbreaking voids warranty
- Very easy to break
-If lost, very hard to track down unless you have connections in certain places
-Repairs can be costly
-If the internal Battery is messed up, you'll most likely have to buy a new phone or shell out a lot of money for a new battery.

But this is my opinion, I actually like taking things apart to see how they function and customizing it than the original manufacturer intended, having complete control over my phone and such.
>>
>>51675038
Oh, I thought we were talking about the Droid Maxx 2.
>>
I'm stupid and absolutely not a compulsive buyer. I was absolutely set on buying the OnePlus X during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend, but I held back for some reason. Now—when I actually want it—I'm forced to use an invite. Does anyone have one to share, or should I definitely look for another phone?
>>
>>51675038
Nah, the deal is dead now. They don't even have the Verizon version on their website now.
>>
>>51675054
Were we? Huh.
>>51675168
Yeah I expected that, trying to upgrade from a T-Mobile S3
>>
>>51675030
It's missing band 17, which is the 700MHz band that Rogers uses. It does support Band 4 and 7, so it will get LTE in most places, including the faster LTE they offer on band 7.

The main issue is that for getting LTE in buildings, 700MHz is really helpful (due to being a lower frequency, it penetrates buildings more easily). If you go into an elevator for example, you're likely to lose LTE service and it will drop down to HSPA+.

From a Rogers press release (April 2014), talking about how they are deploying 700MHz in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto:

>The 700 MHz spectrum carries fast signals across longer distances and better penetrates structures such as buildings. This means you can access LTE more regularly in places like basements and building interiors. So you’ll see more LTE signal bars on your phones and tablets and you’ll be less likely to drop down to lower speeds. With the Rogers 700 MHz spectrum, you’ll be able to stream NHL games and YouTube videos in your office building or send emails at the local arena during the intermission of your kid’s hockey game – all with minimal delays.

tl;dr, it will work and get LTE most of the time, but inside buildings you might lose LTE service so your mileage may vary

I'd actually consider a OPX if something bad happens to my Nexus 5X. Looks really nice, except for the lack of band 17.

>>51674921
Pretty much the same thing applies for T-Mobile and the lack of band 12 which is T-Mobile's 700MHz band. So just read the above, except replacing "17" with "12" and "Rogers" with "T-Mobile". Also T-Mobile doesn't use band 7, so you can ignore that.
>>
Sup gents,

have a few minor updates in the latest version of my Mobile Device Guide.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxMugiNgJ2qtTS0tSXdYWEc0ckk/view?usp=sharing

Recent changes
>Combined SoC/Chipset columns
>updated some prices
>added smartwatch section
>added ~5 new phones
>added Cnet ratings to Tablet section
>updated various GSMarena ratings

>changed conditional formatting on Screen size and resolution from color to Data bar.
I felt that Green>Red color gradient implied that larger screen were better than smaller screens but I'm realizing that I shouldn't be displaying it so subjectively. Some people like larger screens, some like them smaller. A data bar makes the options much more objective.

>note to all
I still prefer having the guide as an .xlsx that you download and open in Excel. The guide's primary useful features are the filters and conditional formatting.

As always, if anyone has any recommendations for modifications or additions, just let me know.

OP,
Would you to exchange email addresses so I can forward you whatever the latest guide is for each new thread?

950XL is literally worse in every single way simply because the software is vastly inferior. There are very few apps available, and even the built in apps and the few that are available are shitty quality.

I am an American who wants an android phone with great battery life, stability, will remain updated, good community support, and reliable build quality. I'd also prefer that it be rootable.

I was with Samsung and switched to an iPhone 6 Plus. I love the stability, battery life, OS X integration (primarily texting on my computer) and software support, but I hate the restrictions and lack of 4chan apps without jailbreak.

It's not even an upgrade, it's basically the same hardware with maybe a better battery and better camera.

If you really need a new phone at this time, at least get a phone with a decent upgrade.

If you're really that poor, I feel a Oneplus + 1 is better. You at least have decent features, whereas the X cuts out a lot of things.

Should I go for it? Any other recommendations at this price point?
>>
>>51677098

>>
>>51677034
Also every review I've seen has shown that the 6p only gets average battery life and that the 6 plus blows it out of the water. After being spoiled with this ridiculous battery life, I can't go back to phones that die after 5-6 hours
>>
>>51677115
What ? I don't see that at all.

The 6 surely wouldn't, maybe the 6s has good battery life but the 6 didn't.

What do you mean 5-6 hours? Screen on time, or total time? The 6P gets more like 5-6 screen on time hours, but huge standby time due to doze.
>>
>>51677021
Are you saying the OP2? Lack of NFC though
>>
>>51677154
I'm referring to the 6s plus and 6 plus, not the regular 6 or 6s. I've read posts of people's 6ps showing about 3-4 sot. Since iOS is stupid, I can't get an accurate reading for sot on this thing, but I remember being thoroughly shocked at how well it managed itself. The note 4 was okay, but it went to absolute dog shit be the time lollipop finally rolled around.

While the lack of apps is somewhat true he clearly stated that apps are not an issue. Ignoring that statement and using it as a counter point in the recommendation of a Nexus 6P (with less features) makes you a shill in this particular recommendation.

If he had stated that apps are essential to his experience then, we would be in the right to recommend an Android (or iOS) device.

So I recently flashed one of the CM13 Nightlies to my Oneplus One. Since then, my GPS has been fucked and refuses to find a fix. Using various GPS test apps, it seems there's between 16 and 22 satellites, and yet it only uses 2. Using FasterGPS to change the NTP server did nothing.

Thoughts or ideas?

If you not care about apps, the Lumia 640 XL (movistar, doesn't have LTE) is a good option. You can also get de 640 from Telcel and get LTE.
I think the Moto G is the best Android Phone at that price point. Maybe if you like the design in the M4 Aqua.
>>
>>51677393
Well you go reverse engineer the rom yourself then find what's broken

It's a nightly ffs, of course it's broken.
>>
>>51677393
I mean, I'd just flash to another rom or rollback to what was working last. OR you could reflash to the same thing and see if that resolves anything. It's a bitch, but it may work or at least tell you what the issue is

640XL isn't that great. I prefer the regular 640, since you get the same resolution on a smaller screen. But even the 640 or 640XL are pretty shitty since it's running Windows. See >>51676557 except it doesn't even have the Continuum gimmick.
>>
Any reason why the Xperia Z5 isn't as shilled as it was a couple of weeks ago?
>>
so yea im gettin consistent 6h+ sot with the priv at around 60 brightness, pretty fucking nice not having to charge it at all during the day

plus it only takes like an hour and a half to charge to full with a standard wall charger

overall good phone, stil waiting for att to send those fucking updates though, apparently supposed to improve camera in low light which is only thing its really bad at
>>
>>51677423
Oh of course, why didn't I think of that first?

Not all parts of all Nightlies are broken, nig-nog. Bajillions of people that download them don't have issues. Many people who downloaded the same Nightly I did haven't had a single GPS problem. Nothing is identical.

>>51677426
Not the worst idea I've ever heard. I was running stock CM12 (I think?) before that. I was on Android 5.something. I was having issues with it all over the place - GPS was throwing up Google errors all over the place, Google Java errors occurred whenever I plugged or unplugged the charger. Just shit like that.

Might just need a new goddamn phone.

>>51677431
That's one of the ones I used, mang. Didn't help, unfortunately. Still refused to connect to the satellites and find a fix.
Nothing stood out about the GPS. Some people have had the problem, others haven't, and for some, it's been on and off.
>>
>>51677463
That's why I mentioned that if he had no issues with not too many apps, then the Lumias could be a good option.
>>
>>51677404
Windows phone's have given me trouble in the past, so I probably won't buy one.
Finding the 3rd gen of the G is proving to be a bit hard, though. Just 2nd gens. But that's probably because the carrier's online shops are not that well made.

>>51677463
Telcel, but I don't have issues with changing.
>>
>>51677501
But why would it be a good option when having no apps really limits what you can do with the device?

What if he needs to do something a month from now and the app just doesn't exist?

People's needs change, and going with the phone that is least likely to be able to do something seems like a bad idea.
>>
>>51677523
Buying a phone in Mexico is a fucking pain. Fucking xperia z2 is the same price as it was on launch.
>>
>>51677529
Because he was looking for something cheap and easy to find.
Also, the Lumias have a really good battery life (mine with latest Windows Insider build lasts for two days and a half)
>>
>>51677523
Looks like Telcel and Iusacell both use Band 4 for LTE, which is standard on pretty much any phone made for the US market.

Movistar uses Band 2, which might be harder to find a phone that supports this.

I'm pro windows phone, but only where it makes sense. It doesn't make sense for someone wanting a performance device at all, because it is so limited with its uses.

It's great for budget phones and that's about it. It's only great there because no one wants to buy them, so they get cheap for the specs.

Yes.
Technology is really expensive in general, but phones even more. Double of what they cost in 'murrica at minimum.

The fact that most carriers have zero care of giving proper online support makes matters worse. Telcel still hands out fliers at he plazas is ridiculous.

Don't come to Finland, shit country with shit politicians that are running this country into the ground. Bureaucracy out the ass that hinders everything you want to do.

But really though. The S6 is a great phone, and it has the best camera on the market right now. Even though the Sony should be better, the software ruins it to the point that there are many other phones that do it better. Just look at low-light shots of Xperia phones (Not just the Z5) and compare them to other phones. The digital noise levels are out of this world.

I even made a post about this a few weeks ago and everyone that owned a Z-series phone agreed with me. I have the original Xperia Z, it has the exact same issues that I see in the Z5 when it comes to the camera. The software image processing messes everything up. And it really pains me to say it, but the camera isn't very good.
>>
>>51680579
Lol you had the xz? Haha I'm still stuck with that house fire pos.

Yeah the s6 camera is good but the z5 should be at least on par. The camera processing could be better but the sheer power of the sensor makes it a top tier camera. I blame Sony for still paying the idiots swedes who can't make a proper camera processing algorithm or better yet, just enable camera api2 and raw support.

Yeah I still have it. I don't know about the overheating that you're referring to, mine works fine. But the performance is now starting to get choppy, even though the last update (5.1.1) has made it a LOT better. The camera is also not very good anymore, although it's not horrible. The padding around the headphone flap is gone completely as a result of me opening it pretty much daily for 3 years. It lasted a lot longer than I thought.

The samsung overlay is shit.

Plus i'm probably autist but I hate google.
>>
>>51681082
Pretty much like a 3rd gen Moto G or Redmi 2 2GB, but with a worse camera and AFAIK slightly less accurate sensors, worse internals (storage performance etc), more power drain.

Depending on price, it's perhaps worth it - but I suspect the Redmi 2 2GB will still be better.
>>
>>51681148
I somehow doubt a Jolla (or Fairphone -it will get Sailfish, apparently- or some Ubuntu Mobile or FirefoxOS or whatever exotic thing) is your way around some software components being "shit". But you can try. Well, it should at least mostly resolve your issue with Google.

Personally, I'm just going with midrange Androids. They have really great hardware at this point by the standards of what I actually need & I also like MIUI just fine.

If I wasn't on MIUI, I'd probably be on a CWM derivative like I was in the past, yup. Not seeing anything particularly bad in CWM, either. Maybe you could still try Nova Launcher, though. Some people apparently like it very much.
>>
>>51681034
Honestly, I like the concept, but the phone is a few years old now, and it wasn't top notch when it first came out, so the specs aren't the greatest.

I hope they make a Jolla 2 and improve on the software side so that it has less bugs and has better integration when it comes to Android. It seems like the perfect system, where you get all the apps that android has, but still get a nice OS on top of it.

Jolla people please, if you're reading this, become Nokia 2.0. Oh and please restock your tablets as well, I want one.

> Jolla people please, if you're reading this, become Nokia 2.0
You think they can?

I think they'll probably never manage to compete with Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Lenovo, Huawei, Microsoft, LG, Sony, and so many more...

IMO, something like the kernel tree Linaro produces and publishes (and upstream Linux slowly merging with it and Google's Android kernel) is probably your next realistic chance for an eventual free choice between Linux and Android on phones.

Everything else quite possibly never will be very viable.
>>

Currently have a G4, wondering what phones would be worth looking at for an upgrade? I work in the phone repair industry so reparability is big for me. Been looking at a 6P or maybe 5X, something with USB type C would be nice.

My Gs4's time is coming to an end. Definitely going to get one of the following four: iPhone 6s+, note 5, s6e+, or 6p. I'm not going to be rooting my phone, so don't consider that. Just a "normie" passing through.

>>
>>51681331
I think they can become a reasonable alternative to the other manufacturers. For many people (me included) the Lumia brand is dead now that Microsoft picked it up. Because I know Microsoft is going to do nothing with it and just run it to the ground.

Jolla has a good opportunity to learn from the mistakes that Nokia made (being too big for their shoes) and steadily grow their brand. But the most important thing is that they make good phones, and honestly, the Jolla Phone is pretty good, it's just not good enough.

>>51673828

You should probably factory reset your phone. Updates fuck up the system sometimes.
I'll probably use mine till i get the z5p

The Redmi Note 2 surely also is an option, but listing that suddenly adds a *far* more powerful phone than the rest.

Everything else in your list is more like a Redmi 2 or slower.

> I think they can become a reasonable alternative to the other manufacturers.
I wonder. The fairphone seems more like something that might take off - even though only with a small ideologically motivated crowd that is willing to pay plenty extra.

And even it mostly just on Android for a while. I really simply doubt anyone will have the capacity to fix up Meego or Linux up to something competitive with Android as-is right now.

But eh, if they succeeded, that of course would be great. I just don't believe in it happening...

yo indians, you keep talking about xiaomi
but have you tried meizu phones?
how are they?
meizu m2 mini looks better than redmi 2 based on specs and slightly cheaper.
>>
>>51681579
Meizu, like Oppo, was a big competitor of Xiaomi's for a while. They kinda dived under the radar with me for a year or more now, though.

Most releases didn't seem too exciting and the current Meizu 5 Pro -while apparently quite nice- mostly adds processing power and cost I don't need.

> meizu m2 mini looks better than redmi 2 based on specs and slightly cheaper.
Doesn't seem cheaper to me (it's also ~$100-120).

Maybe it is better by specs, but I haven't tried it.

Can anyone recomend an upgrade to the note 4? I don't care about price but I like big screens. No apple or windows, something with micro sd, and better specs then the note 4 pls.
Something that is rootable (do unrootable phones even exist?) and if it has a stylus I will love you though it doesn't have to. Oh and I'm not a fan on non removable batteries but if it's an AWESOME phone then maybe.

So long and specific, sorry :(, but tyy!!! <3

That might be for example a LG G4 or Redmi Note 2.

The latter won't work with US LTE bands in particular, though.

You hate Android/google because you owned a budget tier phone? What?

Are you mentally ill?
>>
>>51681661
It's gonna be hard to find an upgrade, a true upgrade from the Note 4.

Yeah, unrootable phones exist. It's called the Note 5.
>>
>>51681682
The single core performance of the X10 in the Redmi note2 is worse than the note4, so I wouldnt call that an upgrade over the note4 at all.

Only thing that is an upgrade over the note4 is the note5, or something with SD810. Literally everything else is worse.
>>
>>51681952
so many people do this shit I dont get it, they buy a $100-200 android phone and bitch about how shitty it is. Then they get a $600+ iphone and talk about how amazing it is and how it "just werks".

Nigga if you spent that kind of money on an android phone the shit would work great too.
>>
Any things I should watch out for when buying a Nexus 6P? Do they still ship with tons of hardware defects?
>>
>>51682052
I wouldn't even call it a ton, there have been far worse releases of phones.

You're good now, more than likely. Just make sure to buy from google themselves, Google has the top tier in customer support. They certainly do things for you Apple never would.

What color are you gonna get?

>The single core performance of the X10 in the Redmi note2 is worse than the note4, so I wouldnt call that an upgrade over the note4 at all.
Android + many apps are pretty damn multi-threaded overall.

If it isn't the case for your apps, you should be looking to buy an Apple. They -pretty much by necessity- maxed single core performance 'cause the OS and most apps can't very much into multitasking.

Besides, I think you're just trying to make up reasons... the odds aren't too great that you even need the processing power offered on the Redmi Note 2. (Inb4 you find Crysis for Android to "prove" you actually do).
>>
>>51682086
Well he said he wants more performance than the note4 and you recommend a chinese mediatek SoC with lower single core performance and lower GPU performance.

Sure it has MOAR cores and has a bit better multithreaded performance.

But something like SD810 or Exynos 7420 would be the OBVIOUS upgrade from the Note4.

Both SD810 and Exynos7420 will provide clear improvements across single and muitithreaded operations. As well as a healthy bump in graphics.

X10 is barely better than the note4.

Even if I live in Europe?

Whichever looks the best with both the aluminium and that little plastic thing on the back.

I do not hate google because android, I hate google because it's google

Not a meme you fucking subhuma
>>
>>51682137
Can you buy it in your country straight from google?

>>51682141
The Moto X Pure is not the best phone on the market right now.

Not the best display, nor the best battery, nor the best performance, and definitely not the best camera.
>>
Got a note 5. Might ditch my nexus 7 forever now.
>>
>>51682113
>Well he said he wants more performance than the note4
Better specs. MicroSD slot. Removable battery.

That was what was mentioned. It has it, even if the specs aren't much better.

I think you'll have to give up the battery or microSD or both to do get a SD810 or Exynos7420. And you're going to pay 2-3 times as much, too... but sure, it'll be faster.
>>
>>51682264
yeah, that's why upgrading from a note 4 doesn't make sense until the S7/Snapdragon 820/Note 6
>>
>>51682264
Yeah I know it will cost him a lot to get an upgrade, which is why I personally would recommend he wait.

The suggestion of the redmi note2 just struck me as particularly retarded. The note4 is an all around better device, hell you could easily sell a note4 and buy a redmi note2 and still have money left over.

I think the dude should wait until mid-late 2016 as the note4 is still within 10-25% performance of the best device right now (the note5)

>>51681533
>The Redmi Note 2 surely also is an option, but listing that suddenly adds a *far* more powerful phone than the rest.

Yeah, but i'm still not sure about the budget...
>>
Hey, curry eater, Mi4c doesn't have Gorilla glass right?
Is the screen easily scratchable?
>>
>>51682273
>>51682297
Well, I guess I can agree with waiting being the best option if you don't need a new phone (and can't be arsed to cash in on the price difference...)
