Hello /g/!

I'm the poster from >>51652301. You guys were incredibly helpful, I could barely believe it. I had questions on purchasing a new GPU, I know I need to watch out for size and power capacity, can someone help me out with determining what will work and what won't? I brought photos, as requested.

I used GPUBoss.com to look for a new GPU, I don't need anything fancy (I'm on a college budget). I'm used to playing games on lowest setting at less than 30FPS, so anything else would be lovely. I have the know-how to install the parts, but I'm not sure which parts to buy.

I was looking at the Diamond Radeon R9 290X or the GALAX GeForce GTX 970.

The price/performance ratio of a 290X is better than a 970, and will run most modern games on high or ultra settings.

If you're used to playing games on low at 30fps either card is going to be a massive upgrade for you.

>gpuboss.com

why would you even do that, that shit is biased towards nvidia and its pretty obvious in most cases

simple answer : go get 290 the non X version, it costs less than 970 and wont get you called as a kek
>>
>>51667702
What is the difference between the X and no X?

With ruler.
>>
>>51667738
short answer it probably wont under high gpu load

amount of drives, memory, processor all factor in to wattage and a 460watt is not much.

get a 700+watt psu so u have plenty of power

it makes a difference under load

if its just sitting there running a web browser or something it may run for weeks but the minute you put it under load the thing is going to shutdown without warning using that card u mentioned.

it will go from on to off with no warning and thats when you're gonna learn u dont have enough power
>>
>>51667814
I assume that would come at a larger size. >>51667673 it looks like the current size barely fits as is, what are my options?
>>
>>51667723
>>51667702
Also, the 290X seems cheaper? Amazon sells the 290 for $500 vs. $300 290X

get on my level.

what do you guys think? increased performance by 15% while running about 20% kewler.

they make a watt calculator script

search it

not exact but will get ya close

sure

attach it with rubber bands or something

i have an old duel fan from a xbox 360 sitting on mine held in place with two rubber bands. not pretty but works

i have a series to parallel switch on front of my pc wired into it with a toggle for high and low speed and off. again stupid but original

Let me save you some time.

It wont.
>>
>>51667631

OP, if I were you I'd take look at GTX 950. With that PSU you have there you'll want something energy efficient.

So it looks like I'll definitely need a 700 watt psu. How can I tell if it will fit in my case?

The size is standardised. Just check that the fan is blowing out of your case, some PSUs have the fan on the side instead.
>>
>>51668890
So, any recommendations on PSU? If I want to buy the Diamond Radeon R9 290X and a PSU, what should I look for in a PSU?
>>
Test post
>>
>>51669009
If you have the money, get a psu with twice as much power as you need. The ideal usage range for a psu for efficiency is 50-75%. Modular is nice, but not necessary. Look for the 80+ efficiency rating too. Gold or platinum is good, though bronze will work.

Personally, I would recommend the Rosewill Quark 850w. It'll give you some headroom, is modular, is rated at 80+ Platinum, and was $90 last time I checked. But don't rush into buying something like a psu. Look at lots of reviews and don't cheap out.

^^^ this
>>
>>51669670
and hes right

if you get a good one with double what you need you can always use it in ur next build and thats one less thing you have to buy.

you would be saving money in the long run
>>
>>51668824

just make sure it has the proper plugs on it. 24pin and 8pin 12v for the motherboard and some sata and a 6 or 8pin 12v to power the card.

read into it because i have no idea what exactly each one is called.

im a dumb hillbilly

I get what you're saying, but I know better than to cheap out on a computer. By budget I mean I don't need 4K or 120FPS

If you're not going to overclock then why get a Z97 motherboard and a K-series cpu?
>>
>>51671082
because its cheaper than a non k version as well as the motherboard
