Why don't you have 10TB of storage, /g/?
>>
Because I prefer to not lose 10tb all at once.

10tb won't mean much a decade from now, definitely. But right now, that's a LOT of space to use, meaning a lot of space to lose all at once
>>
It's gonna be cheap, I think.
>>

CAn I poke a hole in one of these and snort the helium to get high?
>>
>>51644906

I have a LOT more than 10 TB of storage. Last count it was about 30 TB.

I'm just not stupid enough to put it all on one HDD where a single failure will take out everything important.

In a few years I'll upgrade to whatever new tech is available then, probably 8 x 100 TB SSDs in RAID 6, using about 5 total watts when active.

How is that even an argument? We are talking about present time. The fact is, you don't need 10TB now. Whatever will happen 10 years later is not important.

I barely keep my porn on a 1TB drive, I keep deleting it, recutting it so I only have the good parts, even re-encoding to HEVC.
I know eventually, my porn collection will be so well optimized to only include irreplaceable gems that I will need to buy more storage, and then more.
Porn is like space, it's a never-ending void that you can travel through forever.

RAID5 is supposedly "unsafe" with drives that large, though I'm not sure if there was any legit research/experimentation done in that direction to determine if it's true or not. Statistically, it could be.
>>
>>51647414
>Maxtor

>>
>>51644927
>>51648496
Who says you have to Raid it?
It would make for a nice mirror backup.

You can have a 10TB Raid with 1TB drives + redundancy, then just have the 10TB WD drive as a backup of that raid.

Of course you obviously shouldn't ever raid it or use it as your main drive. The entire point of these large capacities is archival storage, aka BACKUPS.
>>
>>51648615
Sure, it would work for that, but I'm curious about $/TB you get with one of these or if you can get a better deal with smaller drives, I imagine you could.

This means these are only useful if you are limited by physical space or by the number of SATA ports. Could be good for enterprise shit (what it's aimed at anyway) but probably not the best choice for home use.
>>
>>51648563
It's a generally agreed notion that anything above two terabytes is really bad in RAID5. The chance of misreading a bit approaches 1 at that level.
>>

>>51650873
I know the theory, still, that means that it's essentially impossible to read all the data on such a large drive, RAID rebuild or no. Yet I'm sure lots of people (me included) have often done shit like backing up a drive or transferring large amounts of data with no failures occurring.

This means that you cannot read all the data you have on the drive, so you're being sold a storage device that cannot read all the data it stores. This is pretty retarded and you'd think those errors would come up pretty frequently with the number of large HDDs in the wild.

The figures for the bit error rates may very well be HDD manufacturers covering their asses and/or only relevant for HDDs that are close to death.

So I'd really love to see some actual experimental data proving that rebuilds on RAID5 are actually unsafe, IF the other drives in the array are healthy.
