Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Never bought my own laptop before and considering an incomplete T500, no HDD or charger. Would probably upgrade to a SSD. Just browsing and programming.

How much should I pay for this thing?
>>
>>51499455
What is the screen resolution? The T9900 is a pretty damn good CPU.
>>
>>51499380
Should I buy any specific DDR 3 RAM for my thinkpad, or should I just buy the cheapest. I'm thinking of upgrading to 4gb.

I'm thinking about buying some kind of buying something like a Lenovo ThinkPad 10 20C3A00QAU 64GB, or something similar for doing various small programming projects when I'm out etc.

Any recommendations of something better and how useful this would be. I plan to run Windows 10 on it and visual studio.

You probably should
if its 1600*900 youre good. In most applications and use cases thats all you really need. And even if you need more real estate you can hookup a second display.
1366*768 on the other hand is a complete cluster fuck designed to punish us for all the unlicensed pickle tickle we do. God made 1366*768 on the 8th coz he a feeling that man kind was going to be a vile race and they needed to be controlled and tortured

Has anybody tried using thinkpads as light duty servers?
>Multicore

I mean people say the raspberry pi is a decent cheapass homeserver. I can do lots of thing on a ThinkPad that I cant do on a pi. But not vice versa and at the end of the day i can take my "Pad server" anywhere.
Thoughts? Input? Ideas?

I have a T410, it's ok, but it have not battery. I don't know which one, the ThinkPad Battery 55++ (9 Cell Lithium-Ion, 94 Watts/Hr) or the ThinkPad Battery 27++ Slice (9 Cell Lithium-Ion, 11.1 V, 8.4 Amp/Hr), which is better? Also, where can I buy someone?

(sorry for my english)

That is a given. It's more of a question of can it be a good server. and if so to what extent?

In what way? Minus the side speakers I don't see how it's bulky.

Sure it can be a fine server. It's not really clear what you are asking. I mean it's a computer with a decent cpu, room for ram, and sata-based storage with a gigabit ethernet card. It's as good a server as any computer with those specs would be.

Got this in the price range on the guide in just about mint condition. The *only* thing is the battery could hold more charge and there is a tiny white scuff on a corner. I'm coming from something that got 3 hours of battery life on a good day though.

Shit guys, now that someone asked to make a ThinkPad as a server, maybe I should too... for perhaps a torrent server? I have a 1TB HDD it can read off of, I presume an SSD should be used for the base OS and 1TB HDD for data right?

>got a shitty T42 from work, missing keys and HDD/Caddy
>got a pristine A21p, looks operator as fuck, UXGA display but not IPS, 850MHz PIII 512MB RAM, shit HDD, 2 distros not working atm... W2K has a password but I don't want to knock it.

Also I find it quite funny the difference between an e/m model and p is a 15" display and a different keyboard/palmrest bezel for the screen.

I need project to work on over the weekend. Which ThinkPad era should I go more in depth on the graph, or any models in general? Please limit it to 6 years/classes.

So I got a brand new chinkpad T450s from work for personal use. Pretty basic model, no ram, 1600x900 screen, 500Gb HDD + 16Gb cache M.2 SSD.

I already got a single-slot 16Gb ram stick (soldered 4 + 16 = 20Gb single channel), a nice 250Gb sataIII SSD and a new WiFi module ripped from an XPS 13 (2015) since the installed Intel 7265 tends to drop 802.11n, even on newer firmware (first time I head of bad open source Intel drivers).

My last upgrade should be the screen since it has the shitty TN. My problem is that the screen models for the T450s are almost non-existent and I'm thinking of buying T440s' models.

Any info on that? From what I'm reading, I should go with AUO (from T440s users' posts).

>>51500207
think of the slice battery as an addon to the original battery.
it goes all the way around the bottom and is designed perfectly to work with the 6 or 9 cell battery and lets you get crazy battery life.
but it also adds a fuck load of weight to the laptop and makes it a lot less fun to carry around with you.
also I have a battery for a t410 if you want it.
it came with either my t410 originally, and when I sold my t410 I sold it with only the extended battery so I have no use for it.

Yesterday it charged just fine, and today when booting it was stuck on windows update for quite a while, when it booted the battery was on 0% so I plugged the power cord in, when I did, the battery indicator said I had no battery installed, when I plug it out, it says 0%.

its not like its the end of the world.
you can always pick another compatible battery.

This.

It's a safety feature. At the slightest hint of a problem, the controller will kill the battery to prevent a fire or a melted battery. LiOn is inherently dangerous if the cells are damaged.

I checked all through my house to find another charger, I found it, but apparently it was faulty, so that was a no-go, I tried fixing it but it was the plug itself that was bad so I was bummed out.

I also updating the bios but apparently you need a fully charged battery, so that's a no-go too.

In a final attempt almost 3 hours later, I tried plugging it in and booting it up one last time, and the fucker worked!
I will promptly install gentoo.

This T420 can open a fucking unholy amount of new tabs/windows/videos. I've had it for almost a year now, and it's still impressive as hell. Posting from a freshly aquired X200t.
Nearly original specs with only the drive swapped for a SSD, the original pen and a dock for USD 125.

There's a thinkpad t430 for $400 on amazon right now, is this a good deal? I'm searching for a new laptop to replace my current crapper. Ideally it has to be >= 1600x900 res and have a processor >= i5 G2, both qualities the t430 has. The hard drive space is a bit small though.
>>
>>51510208
No fuck that, 8GB ram? if he got two 4GB sticks probably cost 20 bucks each or hell even less if hes a recycler, fuck him, he should of told you that its not what was expected, you did not want to buy a scratched to fucked machine.
When we had a laptop or part broken, we messaged the buyer first before we offered what we had that was in greater value, or if there was anything we could of worked out.

>>51514342
I sold a T430s for $300 locally and a T430 w/ a minor cosmetic issue for $240 via eBay.
I'd only pay that much from a TPF enthusiast or from a trusted local seller.

Hey guys, this might be a bit weird of a request..

So, I'm planning on setting up a projector in my room, with a pull down screen.
Now, my gpu is at the max monitors it can handle, and switching monitors constantly would be awkward.

Instead, since all my media is already on a network drive, I'll just get a cheap PC and hook it up to the projector.

A laptop seems ideal for this, since I can shove it in some where or duck tape it to the ceiling.

And, I already have the perfect canidate, a old t60, whose screen broke and is removed.
Only problem is, I know it will have some trouble with the heavy bitrate 1080p stuff.
So, any ideas of thinkpads, or any laptop really for <100 that will be the most powerful?
Screen, battery, even build quality for the most part don't matter.
Just video decoding ability, has to be able to connect to wifi, and not be a vacuum cleaner.
Right now I'm seeing t410 as my best option?

(Miniitx desktop would be nice, but more expensive.)
>>
>>51514384
Ah well, the t430 is sold by a "amazon certified refurbisher", whatever that means. There's one on ebay for $300 but it has minor scratches, so it'd be a gambit on how minor they actually are or not. Think I'm going to jump on it, I'm a bit tired from searching for laptops all week and the next "best" thing I can find is a t450 with a better processor/integrated GPU and has 2 3 cell batteries(does that make is a 6 cell?) but with 4GB less ram.

How are the batteries on these things? Anything I should be prepared for with them? Also as an aside, could I upgrade the harddrive to an SSD or would it just be better to get an external one?
>>

I have a shitheap SL410 that handles 1080p Japanese cartoons fairly well when plugged in through hdmi. I threw in a T9600 C2D I salvaged from a w500 into it though, which might have made a difference as the stock cpu blows in the sl410. Might as well just get a w500, I guess

Yeah the T450/40 use a two battery setup, you could buy a 6 or 9 cell for the second unit

As far as battery life goes, I want to say I had gotten 5 hours on my T430 with integrated graphics, maybe 4 on my T420. But I always buy used/for parts so they aren't full spec'd. So don't take my review/opinion as fact

Just be careful in the long term. Once the rubber tabs come off, the display tends to twist a bit in transport. In turn this will end up causing the keyboard to eventually scratch the touchscreen overlay (it's polycarbonate on the touchscreen model, the pen only X220t is however glass)
235 cycles is ok considering how long the X220t has been around I guess

You have to open the HDD bay and take the rubber rails out holding the drive in place. Throw them away and use a piece of cardboard as a replacement. The rubber rails on these thinkpads goes bad after like 3-4 years and starts to smell. Don't worry, once you take them out and have the computer on, the smell will go away/be completely gone within 24-48 hours.

not from you, I don't have time to fuck around with your butthurt bullshit and you're not /g/ as a whole. it's a simple question and you responded like an assburger so fuck off

I was a bit afraid of that, but it's not that smell (at least from what I can smell), I guess it's more likely the smell of the basement of the previous owner.

Will some blasts of compressed air take care of that?

You're the genius that thinks his mom will give a single fuck about any of the thinkpad features because you're a cheap bitch that doesn't love his mom enough to buy her anything nice.

It might just smell like some weird funky shit. That's basically it. Open the HDD bay by unscrewing that one screw and take a wiff, basically. If it is very strong there, you know for sure that it's the HDD rails. It will be very obvious, trust me. It might just smell like some old laundry or some shit like that. It just smells weird, but it's the rails. the materials on thinkpads don't really hold smells or develop any except for those useless pieces of rubber in the HDD bay.

just spray some can spray bro
>>
>>51526653
I just throw the rails away and leave the laptop open to air for an hour, maybe with a fan blowing into the holes and such. Then, I will just use it and deal with the smell for a few hours because it won't be gone yet as it sticks around in the hdd bay and on the drive that was in it. It will start to fade once you turn it on and let it go without the rails in it. After the first night, the smell will be 99% gone. it's just those stupid rails.

none of what you said makes sense. even I don't give a fuck about "thinkpad features" and of course I want a cheap reliable notebook for her, stop shitting your diaper over nothing. you probably spend all day in this general and collect old shit with IBM written on it and think a normal person gives a fuck.
>>
>>51526665
you cant buy good laptops with 300 dollars, he probably wants a bang for his money since thinkpad are dirt cheap and decent

stop projecting

>sweaty balls
im not american and my sides are on orbit right now. how specific.

anyway, is the HDD rail smell problem isolated to the x200/t/s?
because my x60, my x61t and my x220t doesnt have these issue. and these also have rubber rails
>>
>>51526808
no, it's with any thinkpad that has those rails. it may be due to the bay heating up too much or something. I don't know, but most of the used/old thinkpads that i've owned have had that problem and I just toss the rails immediately as it's always the source.

Doesn't look bad, maybe upgrade the RAM, as you could get another stick of 4 GB and use that one.
