Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

"So a little update for you all, Lenovo still working very hard on the ThinkPad Retro project. A team of Taiwanese diehard ThinkPadders will visit Lenovo Yokohama next week, and they will be briefed on all things ThinkPad (and some details on Retro). Apparently, right now the bottleneck for Retro project is on sourcing the screen. for 13.3 inches 16:10 and 15.4 inches 16:10 IPS screens are all exclusively produced for Apple. But i am guessing CES we will see the prototype for the Retro ThinkPad."

Why the fuck do they not just use a 3:2 screen? Like seriously, there wouldn't be any sourcing issues and it's closer to the old 4:3 ideal than 16:9 ever will be.

If the pentium 3 supports PAE and NX bit, you should be fine using any modern linux distro.
Just be aware that xfce under debian eats 200MB when idle.

Some newer thinkpads use a pentium M, which does NOT have these features and doesn't support any modern distros without patching the kernel with fakepae or something.

I have not really gotten the chance to use my X230 yet, but I unearthed it today and I am working on setting it up as my workstation. Right now, with a series 3 docking station, it is able to drive 2 1080p monitors, and connect to all of my peripherals, so I am pretty happy. I hope I can keep this functionality when I install GNU/Linux on it like I do with all of my machines, but right now I am just using it under Windows 7 Pro.

So /tpg/, my brother's Surface Pro 3 broke and Microsoft will be sending a new unit within the next couple of days. It's less than a year old, but the I/O port for that stupid keyboard attachment failed and it's having intermittent power-on issues. What a piece of garbage.

He's now thinking of selling the replacement Surface that Microsoft sends and getting something else, so long as that something else is a tablet and absolutely not made by Apple. Now, I originally told him to get an X220t but he said it was "too bulky" and still stands by that statement. I'm wondering if the ThinkPad Helix or the Yoga would fit the bill. Which one would be better? Or should I just tell him to man up and carry an X220t?
>>
>>51463364
i have the yoga and its fine, just a bit too heavy

Not really, but you can get pretty high resolutions on the T-series, like 1920x1200 or 1920x1080. That's particularly true of the T5**, which are a little bigger than the T4** counterparts.
>>
>>51471761
T-series units with the high-resolution screen are rare as hen's teeth. Things are damn near impossible to find, most of the time it's 900p for you. If you're looking for those kinds of resolutions, you're probably better off just copping a W series.

Free W520 guy reporting in. I've got a new battery on the way and I'm going to pick up some more RAM this afternoon. The 2620M dual-core processor is piss slow though, so I'm thinking of replacing it with one of the quad-cores. I've been thinking of the 2760QM. While the 2920XM would be good for bragging rights, it only offers marginal performance improvements over the 2760QM (which itself would already be twice as fast as the existing processor) at twice the price.

Now, is installing a quad-core in a W520 just a simple matter of taking out the old dual core and swapping in the new processor, or do I need a different mobo/heatsink? My understanding is you can just toss it in and then have access to all four memory banks with little or no issue.
>>
Hey /tpg/, I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my T420, but I don't know a lot about what's compatible.

So, what specs do I need to match to the RAM I currently have, if any?

And, what's the maximum amount of RAM I can drop in? Some places say 8GB, and some say 16GB, which is it?
>>
>>51473292
Depends on your CPU.

I'm pretty sure all T420's support 16 GB at 1333 MHz, although you can also use faster RAM and it will just be underclocked.

So my W520 from the incommunicado seller has finally arrived, and while it came with more memory than described (16GB vs 8GB), it has a weaker processor (2720qm vs. 2760qm) and is a little more beat up than the seller let on to. I'm kind of conflicted insofar as how I should react to this.

The T510 that I got for $95 handles New Vegas, STALKER, and DMC4 quite well at native resolution. T420 with dedicated graphics probably offers even better performance between the stronger CPU and better API support and doubled VRAM on the GPU. If you get one with HD 3000, though, don't expect to play much more than Source games on low settings.

My thinkpads aren't ready for pickup ($10, $30) respectively, but I'm assuming they're going to perform similarly to my 2008 crappy HP laptop with iGPU.

PS1/N64 and earlier emulation ran fine, Starcraft 1 and (original) Counterstrike ran great, Minecraft ran *okay* but I had to turn render distance to tiny.

Basically /vr/ but not /v/. Maybe depending on the dGPU you could play < 2010 vidya, dunno.
>>
>>51479235
What the hell am I supposed to do with so much RAM, though? I was using a 4700MQ with 8 gigs for years and that was more than sufficient. My secondary computer is a T410s with the base processor and 4 gigs.

W520 is idling at like 11.5% memory usage right now. Seems to be running really hot too, the guy who got his for free said it would stay around 35c, but mine's up around 55c at idle. Is the 2720qm really that much hotter, or is the thermal paste just shot?
>>
>>51479448
It's good to repaste used Thinkpads anyways.

And I don't know, I use a X200 Tablet with 4Gb. But 16GB? I don't know, RAMdisks? Either way, it doesn't hurt.
>>
>>51479372
>Starcraft 1 and (original) Counterstrike ran great

This is literally no fucking surprise to me. I could run Counterstrike with no issues on my old Pentium 4, and I can run the original Starcraft fine on a Lombard Powerbook G3. I would certainly fucking hope anything you use daily would be more than capable of running those. I think the kind of information he's interested in is more along the lines of

>can it run TF2
>can it run CS:Source
>can it run SC2
>>
>>51479481
I've heard most of the time when you repaste a thinkpad, it just increases the idle temp.

The only thing you really need to do is give it a good dust cleaning unless something is really screwed up.
>>
>>51479840
Not according to my experience. I owned T42, T60, T61 and X200 Tablet.

For you guys with x220t how is the screen glare and laptablet overall? Im debating between a x220, t420 and x220t. Seems like the only downside is the battery, aesthetics usb 3.0 port for the x220t.

Due to the overlay, the X220t will have the worst glare. It's not glossy but it's not exactly matte either (basically halfsies AG coat) so you'll get some reprieve but not very usable in sunlight
X220 and T420 would be roughly the same in that respect
>>

Can someone help me out? I recently bought a T410 and near keys j and k there is sort of a rise? Any clue how I can fix it?
>>
>>51481495
I had that on my T420 too. I think its due to the screw holding the panel directly under it, on the lower side of the laptop. The screw is really long, so unscrew it a bit so that it still holds whatever its holding but its not driven completely into its socket.
>>
>>51481582
Correction; not the panel itself, but whatever is inside the panel. I can't remember what is was, but I think the screw held the keyboard. I had to undo it to get to the RAM slot under the keyboard.
>>
is the x220t capable of using 16GB RAM?

>>51482032

Yes
>>
>>51482166
How about a dedicated card, and a 1920*1080 screen?
>>
>>51482184
Externally, sure. Get one of those eGPU expresscards, hook up your favorite desktop GPU and screen and enjoy.

The X220T has enough heat problems as it is that putting that sort of hardware inside it would be suicidal.
>>
>>51482840
Yeah, I mostly mean as a docking solution, except for the screen, which would be real nice to have on the go.

Well, it's probably going to be a x220t or a yoga for me.

I really like the 1920*1080 screen on the yoga 15, but it's hard to argue with the 220t price point.
>>
How long should an X220 last for a user who basically just needs to run Firefox? All I really need to do is run a few Valve/indie games on Steam on Ubuntu, run Firefox, and listen to music. I fully intent on installing an IPS panel and an SSD at some point in time.

I know futureproofing is retarded, but I'm honestly curious.
>>
>>51482881
As far as I know there's no 1080p mod for the tablet variant, but it's a 12.5" device anyway. 768p certainly feels cramped sometimes, but you get used to it. It's nowhere near as awful as the resolution would be on a 14 or 15 inch laptop.

Considering a used Thinkpad instead of something new on Black Friday. I've never purchased or owned my own laptop before.

I'm a 5th year CS major, a bit late to the party but eager to learn. I'd mostly browse and program on it. Looking for a 15" screen, since I like to split the screen between documentation and text editor. I'd also probably run Linux Mint to learn my way around that.

I saw a few T500 with 3.06 Ghz and 4GB RAM on ebay but are the incomplete ones overly ambitious for someone like me? Does the buyers' guide's recommended price still apply for these, when most seem to have slower processors?

T520 without an NVS 4200 here, I was looking into getting an NVS 4200 a couple weeks back, and I read something about different heatsinks on the two models.

I'm waiting on my Dell Precision M4800, what do you guys think of it?
Here are the stats:

Screen - 15.6"
CPU - Intel® Core™ i7, 4910MQ, 2.90 Ghz (3.90 GHz Turbo Boost), Cache 8 MB
RAM - 16 GB - DDR3 - 1600 MHz
SDD - 256 GB
GPU - Quadro K2100M - 2GB

It seemed to have a small edge in quality of construction compared to the equivalent Lenovo Thinkpad (W541) but the downside is that it is heavier. Anyone have any experience with it? I'll be using it as a CAD machine.

Sounds like a good deal. Try to bring it down to 130-140 if you can.

As for the 'damage', it seems like the front part is detached from the back cover. It might just snap back into place, though the owner would've already done it if it were that simple.

Shouldn't be too big an issue assuming the screen isn't damaged. Try to get a 3-4 day checking warranty if you can.

How much would someone be willing to pay for a T430s with the FHD IPS mod preinstalled, backlit keyboard, and ultrabay battery? I'm trying to decide if I should part it out or sell as-is.

B140HAN01.2 1920x1080 FHD IPS screen

3-cell ultrabay battery
New touchpad buttons

SUSE is fine, but Mint is just a double-derivative of Debian, which is asinine.

A t520 or t420 can be bought for 200 bucks with a bit of patience, and depending on where you live.
In case you're not satisfied with any of the components, they're easily replaceable.
