Hey

I bought a rMBP through college just over a year ago, and I'm thinking of selling it to get pretty good resell value (if I can sell it for £700 then that's pretty good imo, any advice?)

Anway, the main reason for sale (apart from getting that resell value back) is to buy another laptop with a bit more grunt. I love the rMPB, perfect for a daily drivers (battery, OS, build, screen, etc.) but I couldn't fully spec it out and am stuck with base integrated GPU.

So anyway, what's a good Windows laptop for around £600? I don't need OS so I was thinking about going through one of the custom laptop builder to cheap out on some of the costs, e.g.:

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/optimusVII-15/

"proper" quad core i5 + 960m seems like quite a step up from intergrated + dual-core i5. Plus without some features (OS + no HDD 'cause SSD) prob can get under £600.

Anyone had any experience with these? Also, when is the typical laptop refresh supposed to happen? I'm out of the loop, but aren't the new GPU's supposed to be on a smaller architecture which theoretical means less power/better battery? Should I hold out for that instead?

Soz for the loaded question(s)

You can extend CCleaner with winapp2.ini.
BleachBit (a free CCleaner alternative) has winapp2.ini support built in.

It's also important to check which processes and services are running on your system by default (at boot).

If you are using a HDD and your install was a long time ago a defragmentation could also help.

I have a python script that does a lot of reading and updating on a MySQL database. Both programs are currently running on the same computer.

Multiple scripts ("jobs") can be running at the same time, but usually one very intensive job "clogs" the computer, making it concentrate solely on it at the expense of the other scripts. Each job also spawns many processes in parallel. Also sometimes the MySQL server gives out a "too many connections" error if too many jobs are run at the same time.

Is the only solution to this problem to buy a grid of computers and distribute work to them?

I just got a 2nd hard drive for storage, a 3tb seagate internal , win7 64 / msi 970 motherboard

im running my system off a 2tb hd, I installed and made a volume for the new hd but it's only giving me 2tb storage with about 750gb unallocated (pic related)

a couple discussions on google were hard to grasp but from what i gather "It needs to be formatted in GPT and the system should support UEFI. For hdds over 2 TB. If you want to use all of the hdd. "

and there isnt much else explained in the forum

so how do i go about putting the HD in the correct format without having to reinstall windows... it's not worth the time and reinstalling everything to free up the 750 gigs so I'll try anything but that
>>
>>51499888
Im going to assume that it's not possible and i'll have to order a new usb port
>>
>>51500173

Probably not by much, from what I can tell. The 960 and even 970 can pull a lot from just a phenom 2 x4 965.
Even in the case of witcher 3.

YMMV depending on if you want to play console ports looking better than on xbone or play arma 4 on max.

If you're asking if the card is worth it with your current CPU, my answer it's yes. If games become more CPU intensive than they are now, you can upgrade when it happens.

Ah. Does Windows offer the option to make a partition without writing a new filesystem to it? If so, then that should be fine.

Can newer K sku chips use VT-d?

Most info I find is mixed since it often refers to older K sku models which did not support it. I've heard the newer generations do. (Planning on a 4690k)

Also mobo brands that support VT-d?

I know ASrock does, but the board that meets my need has very mixed reviews and dies early, so looking at MSI. MSI use to have weird ass BIOS layouts, but maybe they are good now. They at least last from what I've seen. My old ASUS board did support it, but I've seen some of those short lived too.

Fuck manufactures really don't label anything that isn't a socket or clock speed. Sorry I wouldn't normally ask, but this stuff is really unclear even in some of the manuals for the boards.

Not so stupid as it is really specific and odd.

Getting single, to sometimes a small row of pixel flickering. Here's the weird thing though. In browsers and programs, it's fine. In games, no problem. Video is normal. It only happens on my backgrounds, and only some of them. Just updated to newest Catalyst drivers to see if that would help and nothing. Not the display. And having trouble thinking it could be the card, though maybe? A card wouldn't be so specific, neither the display. If the pixels were flickering because of hardware it would be indiscriminate to variables.

Anyone ever had this happen? Sapphire R9 390 Nitro btw.

Is there a big difference between DDR3 and DDR4 RAM? The processor I'm working with is a i7-2600, which is only compatible with DDR3, but the processor is pretty solid, so I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading or keep this.

My friend wants to save money, so I'm leaning towards keeping it, maybe changing the motherboard out if it's not compatible with one of the new graphics cards we're picking out (still thinking on that part).

He's pretty patient, so upgrading later down the line is a viable option.

DDR4 is still a little expensive and not really worth it yet. It will eventually be the standard but not yet.

Is setting up some sort of ftp/sftp server on one or both computers the way to go? Or is there an easier way. Again, I'm just looking for file transfer capability, not setting up some sort of remote desktop.

Also, is there a preferred ftp client to do this? I already have winscp to talk to the school's computer clusters, but filezilla is always at the top of google searches. running win7 on both machines.
