In my experience it's rare for the online materials to actually be necessary to do the course. (In part I assume because professors know it's all a scam and don't want to fuck you over if you want to rent or buy a used textbook.)

Most good schools will have the faculty define the curriculum for intro classes and then find a textbook that fits it best.
If its the other way around and your professor just centers the class around a textbook then your school is shit.
