>What is GNUnet?
GNUnet is a fully decentralised p2p framework for a number of applications, the most commonly used one (probably) is filesharing
More info:
https://gnunet.org/goals
https://gnunet.org/concepts

>Why use GNUnet over private trackers?
Private trackers:
>have to keep up a seed ratio or you're thrown out
>have to attach an account to your searches and requests
>have to trust that the private tracker's owner won't leak your details anywhere
>uploading must be approved
GNUnet:
>no seeding requirement
>no account needed
>no trusted 3rd parties needed
>no way to trace any traffic back to you, unless you set anonymity to 0
>even just searching for content can be done via GNUnet's anonymous protocol
>anyone can publish anything
>no way for publishers to know who's downloading
>no way for downloaders to know who's publishing (except via optional namespaces)

>Sounds cool, where do I start?
 /g/ GNUnet QUICKSTART GUIDE FOR FILE SHARING

### INSTALLATION ###

download and install using the package manager of your distro

or

https://gnunet.org/installation

### POST-INSTALLATION/USAGE ###

*Before doing anything else, run following command in terminal: gnunet-arm -s

To use the GUI, run gnunet-gtk
For help on uploading/searching/downloading files via the GUI, see https://gnunet.org/first-steps-file-sharing

GNUnet can also be used in the terminal

__TERMINAL_COMMANDS__

To upload a file: gnunet-publish [-n] [-k KEYWORDS]* [-m TYPE:VALUE] FILENAME
*Note: see https://gnunet.org/gnunet-publish for more information

To search a file: gnunet-search "[SEARCH TERM]"

To download a file: gnunet-download -o FILENAME -- GNUNETURL
*Note: the gnunet-search command will output the command needed to download the desired file

To shut down GNUnet: gnunet-arm -e

Other files can wind up cached and not showing up in the index, at least by my understanding

as long as it just shows what im still seeding per se. Thanks senpai

I don't know why you guys are having problems.

when you first install gnunet, it starts on root.
run gnunet-arm -e on root to end it, then run
gnunet-arm -s using a non-privileged account.

"unprivileged" is far from enough. First, you need the account to be a loginable user in the gnunet and gnunetdns group. Second, you need tun support inkernel and the tun module to be started. Third, you need XT_TABLE_OWNER support and that module to be loaded. After that, you need to somehow acquire peers, which doesn't always workout.

Ironically, I didn't have to do any of that shit on Arch

How long should a search take?
That mine's been hanging for a minute means whatever isn't populated yet?
How long till this happens?
>>
>>51400239
Since searching uses GNUnet itself, it has to bounce around peers looking for whatever you asked for
If you haven't started the peer yet, you probably need to
Otherwise, it will take more than a few minutes, especially if you don't have many peers connected to you (which you probably don't so soon)

if the system is as anonymous, secure, and well-designed as the sites and people here purport, then the goal should not be to filter users out to remain secure (as with other systems like private trackers, usenet i guess, other private communities), the goal should be to get as many users as possible to be more secure.

if a protocol is poorly designed, the best hope is to have few people use it so people might not bother attacking it...

but if the protocol is well-designed and only a few people use it, the weak point is the fact that anyone using the protocol is more likely to be the attacker's target.

what i'm saying is, if this system is as nice as the site claims it is, build a nice GUI, make it normie friendly, and build your network's size to increase its speed, reliability, and available items.

It was so bad of an experience I reinstalled windows
>>
>>51410202
The problem is that we need a userbase first. We have to shill it like notch shilled minecraft, except without asking money for it.
Making a site operate on gnunet such that users have to be running a node to consume the content is a good idea, especially if the site is very useful (movie, animu or tv show torrent collection with good organization, libgen mirror, imageboard, forum, reddit clone, etc.)

>>51410223
My current speed on gnunet is 17 b/s :^)
The major issue is actually finding a path to the file (can take hours or even days right now), downloading kinda works in bursts (easily 400kB/s+, then goes to 0 for a while, so the average is 17 b/s).

debian, maybe im running it wrong. should I be running it as the gnunet user?
>>
>>51410483
You have to get peers first, and then they have to connect to someone who has content that matches that tag, and then you have to receive the result.
>>
>>51410522
So just let it sit there or do I have to do something to get more peers?
>>
>>51410512
You need to be in the gnunet group. Additionally, if you're using the dns, you need to be in the gnunetdns group.
>>
>>51410534
Yes. Use gnunet-peerinfo to see if you're connected to your peers. Also ensure that gnunet-arm -s has been run.
>>

well I think I did that when I did this https://gnunet.org/build-instructions-debian-8

oh well.. thanks anyway

I could get everything to work as a regular user except the part that gets peers. I have to run it with sudo, then everything will work fine.

Here's a protip for those who've got it working:
$ cd /path/to/GNUnet/
$ mkdir Search
$ screen -S gnunet.search.test
$ gnunet-search test > Search/test
^ad

To check on them later:
$ less Search/test

To download a found file:
$ `cat Search/test | grep filename.file`

A bit rough, but perhaps this can be expanded on?

Also you can just probe the database (which path is in your config) instead of making essentially a copy.

The NSA & friends care about everyone. "Intelligence" agencies save everything they can get and when your behavior is matched by some kind of algorithm they especially care about you. Most people don't get any problems, but a few go to Guantanamo without trial.

>>
>>51414531

>>51414659
depends on what they mean by `alternative'.
could just as easily be said that freenet is nothing like this either.
in my head, freenet is actually much more similar to i2p than this - am I wrong?

we should all be using all four of these things anyway
>>
>>51414696
Freenet caches requests locally in the same way gnunet does, i2p is just tor with a slightly modified routing protocol.
>>
>>51414746
Is it still distributed or does it rely on a third party?
>>
>>51414767
Freenet is entirely distributed and decentralized (and so is gnunet), unlike i2p.
>>
>>51414798
Interesting
I wonder if requests could be translated between GNUnet and Freenet, effectively combining networks
That's probably impossible though
>>
