Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
No news.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Hello /tpg/

What is a similar laptop (any make) with a decent keyboard (with backlight) and a great screen with a similar size/weight as the T420s?

NASA is still using A31p units?

Really, this "proposal" is nobody's fault but Lenovo's. If they hadn't removed so much of what makes Thinkpads desirable in an effort to make them trendy, then NASA probably wouldn't even bother considering anything else.

Are bios locked passwords common in used thinkpads?
>>
>>51392783
Yeah, along with T61p
>>
>>51393190
I haven't seen many, but they're out there. They're a bitch and a half to remove, so avoid whenever possible. If you know how to clear it then you can get perfectly functional thinkpads for really good prices, but it's not as easy as just removing the CMOS battery.
>>
>>51393190

I am planning on adding a internal hard drive to my X220 tablet. It already has a 120gb SSD and I have read that you can put two SSDs in a X220.
Do you guys know in which place the SSD is most likely in so I can prepare better as this is my first time.
>>
>>51393428
It's probably a normal SATA drive, not likely for it to have an mSATA drive without anything in the main bay. You'd have to get an mSATA SSD to do what you want.

Buying off-lease surplus off eBay, about a third of the 30-ish machine sand motherboards I've bought have been password locked. Once you set up a the right connector and BIOS image for ponyprog, it takes about five minutes to open the machine, clip to the BIOS EEPROM and clear it, but you need a clean BIOS image to start.

>It takes 5 minutes and a screwdriver to reset a BIOS password on 2012 or earlier models. No flasher or any of that shit is required.
Yeah, I've seen the 'howto'. It's bullshit. X6x series requires a flashing because it's all stored in an eeprom. And if you fuck with the eeprom while it's starting up the machine won't post. Flashing a clean BIOS also wipes Computrace and the TPM setup.
>>
>>51393691
Ah okay. I'm looking to buy either that or a t420. First time buyer and user also

Excuse me, but I've successfully used the timing attack shorting the 2 eeprom pins on a x60, x61, t61p, t400, r400, x200 and x220.

I can't decide between T400, T420 or X220. The 12 inch screen on 220 may be bit too small for me. Reviews I seen say 400 is pretty cheaply made. 420 seems like a best choice.

Nope, saw a simpler one that left several of those bits out. That does look way more believable.

It also makes it more complicated than simply attaching a SOP clip and pressing one button, but enh, I believe it works.

what's the stylus like on the thinkpad? Does it have a button input? I got to tinker with a surface pro 4 today for my boss, and the stylus that comes with a button that opens one note up from lock (which seems like a security risk now that I think about it).

I'd like to replicate that feature (without the security risks) using autohotkey or something, and a better program than one note.
>>
>>51393882
The T400 is absolutely not cheaply made. Everyone took a giant shit when it was released in 2008 because Lenovo decided not to use the thick steel backplate from the T61 keyboard in order to save weight. If you swap in one of the older keyboards then there is literally nothing wrong with it. In fact I'd argue there's nothing wrong with it even with the newer keyboards.

I'm like the only dude in these threads with an 8560w, lol.

I've owned many (at least 3 of each, various generations of) dell latitudes, HPs elitebooks/compaqs, and thinkpads. I really think people should consider the HP's more often, I typically cycle owning a thinkpad and an elitebook every other year or so. Dells have great specs but they are the worst to use from an ergonomic standpoint (keyboard, touchpad, and clit mouse all suck in comparison) and build quality is subjectively worse.

I actually like the 8560w better than the t520/w520 for these reasons:

>Slightly better performance/$ as of recently
Similarly spec'd W520's seem to be $50-100 more

>Full keyboard with numpad and backlight.
Not as nice/clicky as thinkpad keyboards, but numpad is seriously worth it, and backlight is pretty

>Much, much, much better trackpad
Bigger, has 3 buttons, clicks feel softer/better, and its made of glass so it doesnt wear down at all. the clit takes some getting used to, but isnt that bad.

>Aluminum case, toolless design, and meets mil spec
Its much easier to take apart, and the case is rock solid, there's hardly any plastic anywhere.

>Much better graphics @ price point
The AMD graphics in the 8560w are GDDR5, which is notably faster than the DDR3 NVS/quadros in 2nd gen thinkpads.

Of course, it's not a perfect machine. The bad things are: poor battery life (~1.5 hrs), keyboard is not as nice to use if you dont take advantage of the numpad, no mSATA support (although the 8570w has this), and honestly, the screen latch mechanism feels a little mushy when you close it- its not the satisfying click that thinkpads have. And finally the clit mouse is a little slippery compared to the thinkpad's.

I got mine for 350 USD, but I've seen them as low as $330 with FHD, 250 SSD, i7 2760qm, & 8gb RAM. Thats a crazy good deal if you ask me.

*This is a public service announcement to anyone who wants to buy a Thinkpad with Nvidia.

If you have $300 to spend-- you might as well get a T430. A T430 with no dedicated graphics card (iGPU) will outperform any T420 with Nvidia. The old NVSs and Quadros are crushed by the Ivy Bridge iGPUs.

Also you get USB 3.0, a newer processor, and the ability to upgrade to an X1 carbon screen.

Your probably right. The DV9000s and other HPs in that generation were literally toaster ovens with screens. Back in high school, I knew tons of people with them, and every single one of them died a horrible steamy death.

The modern HP elitebooks and Zbooks are nothing like those at all.

Ah thats good to know, still HP are dicks for overpricing their Beats audio laptops, or I should say best buy are a bunch of cocks.

HP is a shit company IMO, the only good things they make are the business laptops.
>>
>>51399267
build quality gets shittier every year no matter what. every generation before is better built than the one after it. keyboards are shit from xx30 and up as they fucked everything up. even after the xx30, there is no performance increase as they all move to ULV chips that use ultra low power, like this shit is a fucking tablet or something.

I think that's a good temp. Use the power manager, you can always speed up the fans so it spits more hot air.

The temp you run at is determined by your fan profile more than anything.

Hey guys, I want to sell my w510 but I'm not sure how much to sell it for. Here are the specs
Intel i7 Q820 @ 1.73 GHz
-8 Gigs of G Skill RAM
-Nvidia Quadro FX 880M
-128 Gig SSD

How much would you guys pay for it? It's used but I'm running condition. Only thing bad is that is has a crack running near the bottom left speaker.

I checked sold listings on eBay for "W510 i7 8GB SSD" and it showed two laptops that sold for $220 ish
Looking at sold W510's show that a few had sold for over $280 which has equal or lesser specs (in my eyes)
Hopefully you have a FHD display, add 10% to what you want to be paid if selling thru craigslist, also there are a few 500 dollardo machines on eBay so maybe someone would pay up towards $300 for your machine... And of course let them know about the small crack that doesn't have any hinders cr to performance/ normal use

Hi anons, what Notebook Should I Buy please?

+What is your budget?
$250

+What size notebook would you prefer?
12"/14"

+Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
yes

+What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
programming
Reading pdfs
web surfing
video watching

+Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places?
yes

+How many hours of battery life do you need?
3 - 4 hours

+Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
I read a lot;
Matte Screen is ok

+Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
only the keyboard: something soft and comfortable with backlit keyboard
(stupid Q: can I install a backlit keyboard on x220?)

+When are you buying this laptop?
Next month or two.

+How long do you want this laptop to last?
4 years +

+How much hard drive space do you need? Do you want a SSD drive?
I could live with 160gb hdd, more would be nice.

+Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD Burner, Blu-ray Reader or Blu-Ray Burner?
Not necessary. I can buy a USB external DVD drive.

Thanks for your suggestions

If you step your budget up a bit, you can go for a T430, that's probably the cheapest option with a backlit keyboard, but expect to pay around 300-350 USD for one of those.

If you can't go above your budget, I'd say T420, it meets all requirements except for the backlit keyboard. It does, however, have a little LED sitting above the screen that lights up the keyboard from above, which works out quite well.

Is a g50-45 worth $100-150, or is there something better for that price range?

Hey /g/, just got an X200s, and I'm trying to install an EVO 850 on it, but the computer doesn't seem to recognize the SSD. Any ideas?
>>

If it's msata, that's not going to happen. They're only supported in 2011 and later models.
>>
>>51412019
No, it's a 2.5 inch model, and seems to fit in there. I think it's SATA 3 though
>>
>>51412036
should work, though obviously with reduced speeds. Have you tried it on another machine?
>>
>>51412036
I'm just replacing the main HDD with it

>so $650 OBO takes all.
oh boy, is it getting hot in here or is it just THIS FLAMING FUCKING DEAL?
>>
>>51411883
You'd have to pay me to get a g50. And I'd still go and buy a thinkpad.

My friends getting the monitor he's selling. $200 for an ultrawide seems to be a deal.
>>
>>51412048
Nevermind, it works now. I guess I just didn't jam it in hard enough

If you keep it, you can fix the hinge with light oil. They are supposed to be greased for life but some get dry over time.

I had this problem, and I put one single drop of WD40 into the creaky hinge. It's been silent for months.

>inb4 WD40 is not a lubricant

Any more opinions on this guys?

Noice. That was my first laptop back in 2004-2005.

how heavy are thinkpads? I need a new laptop that i'll be carrying with me everyday to class and don't need something that's like 10 pounds

been looking at zenbooks also but I know those probably don't compare in weight
>>
>>51413239
Iirc my t420 is a bit under 5lbs. No idea what others weigh, but you can look up the specs somewhere.

Paper, the primary component of cardboard, burns at above 232 degrees. I should hope your hard drive never reaches anywhere near that.

You could also try some packing foam to get a better fit and to absorb vibrations better, but make sure it has a melting point above around 80 degrees.

That's in Celsius btw, for you Americans.

I've had my Asus UL80vt for 5 years now and it's starting to show it's age. I've been considering just building a mid-range desktop and having a lightweight ThinkPad for on-the-go word processing and browsing.

How sketchy is it to purchase refurbished laptops? I've only bought new ones and I'm paranoid of receiving a bad unit. Are my fears unfounded or is this a real issue?

Either way, X220 or X230?

>tfw a dude who bought an LCD from my works eBay never got his package
>they don't want to file it lost, they want us to do it
>we asked if it was in an apartment complex coz we checked via google maps, asked if the neighborhood is rough
>we talk to fedex, they ask us what color was the house and we ask the buyer
>he responds"I don't know"
>you don't know the color of your house
>no, I bought it for a client
>mfw the buyer is going to get shafted because they didn't write down the apartment number

Is there any way for me to get 16 GB of ram in my x220 tablet?
>>
>>51410352
But needing mention of no webcam is stupid.
What else should they mention that is not available, backlit keyboard, IPS, display, no recovery CDs?
I agree the hinge and CD drive shouldn't of been damaged, or loose.
We should check the listing this dude got and show you how to not fuck up next time

Cardboard and tape, I got away paying $30 per laptop with some cheapie caddies, it was great
