Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
No news.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I'm seeing a lot of newer x220ts and x230ts on ebay, with better looking processors, but also running the gamut of 300-500 dollars a pop. I'd really like to get one of these tablet models, cause I think it'd be nifty for work. What's the risk of getting a locked bios on ebay?
>>
>>51363614

It works best that way. You _can_ loop it back to the internal display, but it is complicated and reduces performance. Plus, who wants to game on a shitty 1366x768 Thinkpad tn anyways?
>>
>>51363614
if the seller is selling more than a couple of these the chance is pretty slim. as on these cases the units come from descomissioned lots and most companies dont even allow/bother putting bios passwords.

the ones i have seeing with locked bios are units sold by previous sole owners.

To the guy in the last thread: yes, the W520 actually has the AUO screen. Holy shit, this thing just keeps getting better. And even though the processor is the shitty 2620M, at least it keeps real cool. Haven't seen it tick above 55°c even under load. Idles at like 36.

It depends, models use the same screens, so you can upgrade the 14.1" widescreen to a 900p display
15.4" models can be upgraded to WSXGA+ and WUXGA.

It's not even worth replacing a keyboard unless letters get worn off or the switches don't work. It's not "sticky", in fact it can usually be too slippery when they're that shiny, like a tumbled rock.
>>
>>51366422
I see, perhaps I am the only one that takes pleasure in the bumpy new feeling on a keyboard.

>>
>>51366455
I've bought them before, or found them on really cheap thinkpads that were unused because their fans were fucked up. They're good, but they cost too much to keep replacing, and I have this old shiny T60/T61 keyboard with the ALPS switches, and it's still the best thing I've ever typed on. The switches last years longer than the caps.
>>
Hi /tpg/
I was referred here from /flt/ for info regarding thinkpads.
I'm new to Linux in general, and I'm looking to buy a new machine to run it from exclusively. My plan is to learn the basics, then the command line, then move to other distros.
My friend, who's into making everything he owns run on free software, referred me to this link on the fsf:h
ttps://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/endorsement/respects-your-freedom
I like the look of these computers, and these guys have done all the work in making sure everything is free. They're towards the top end of my price range, but being that I'm new and have noone to help me and I don't know what I'm doing, I feel that it might be worth it to buy one of these, instead of buying a secondhand thinkpad from ebay and trying to free it myself. Especially when it comes to things like BIOS, I really don't know what I'm doing. What would you recommend?
>>
>>51366286
Would the x201t work for me?

Most intensive thing I can think of putting it through would be some games like Shadowrun Returns, Morrowind, and Pillars of Eternity.

But mostly I'd use it in the office, to run microsoft office and some silverlight applications my job uses.
>>
>>51365188
anyone?
what price do people usually pick up X220s for?
>>
>>51366623
If you're just starting out, you won't need a free bios. Most of the time, starting out is as easy as putting in the live CD and installing, unless you have some specialized hardware that isn't supported. Practically any thinkpad you'll find on ebay or craigslist will work out of the box for 99% of everything, with the remaining 1% documented ~somewhere~ online.
What are you planning on using it for, mainly?
>>
>>51366691
I got my x220t for 181 including shipping, and the only visible defects are a few light scuffs at the very bottom of the screen that are basically invisible when it's on, and half of the v on the lenovo logo is missing. You just gotta look around. Try sorting by price.
>>
>>51366701
As I'm planning on working in software development, I want to use it for testing things on Linux, writing and compiling programs, and general purpose. It won't be for gaymen or anything like that, I expect lightweight games would be all I'd put on it. I also want it for getting familiar with the linux command line and terminals, as well as ricing because I'm an autist.
I'd also rather not have to change it later, and I can see that many of these ebay listings have pictures of the listed BIOS, but I have no idea what I should be looking for. Many of them also say their batteries aren't guaranteed to last and I'm not good with hardware, so I'm not sure I'd be able to replace them.
>>
>>51366722

>>51367987

My T520 does, depending on where it is. Standing on a flat surface it idles around 35C, goes up to about 45C when I'm sitting with it in my couch and probably blocking half of the intakes on the bottom.

The coolest-running one I have is an old R40. It was originally designed to use the P4-M and so it had the corresponding beefy cooling system, but later on they just stuck Pentium M chips in it. I don't think mine ever got above 50C, ever. Never even replaced the thermal paste or anything.

should I take this or tell him I can't do it? I have the dosh but I'm wondering how different this could be to a t420. All I could see that really matter is 1lb lighter, 1.5" smaller screen and shittier resolution and a couple of hours extra on the battery life. after looking into it, I could easily put a drive and battery on this for a total of $164 or so and I'm sure that i could sell an x220 for more than that if I didn't like it.

T420 has ultrabay batteries I believe but they're shit-tier. First to discharge, last to recharge, and they only give like an extra 30 minutes. Your money would be better used buying a second 9cell and hotswapping it when the first one goes under.

So, there's a couple of Thinkpads at a pawnshop near me at the same price, a X220 and a T410.

Both at around 230 bucks, which one would you thinkbros recommend?
>>
>>51380177
What are the specs? 230 is rather high for an X220, so it depends on what it has. Also, a T410 is definitely not worth the 230, unless it's maxed out completely
>>
>>51380177
neither are worth that much.
>>
>>51380195

>>
>>51379908

>>
>>51380264
for $230 it better have an SSD, 8gb+ RAM, or an IPS display or just forget about it basically unless he will go down to $200. T420 is the best all around thinkpad right now if we consider price. X220 is still overpriced a lot because of
>muh 3.5lbs with 6 cell
>muh 1 extra hour of battery life

even though it has by far the worst screen on any recent thinkpad, shittier design just being an x-series, and worse thrermal stats just based on the size.

as you can tell, i don't care for the x-series. t4xx(T420 especially) is the best thing ever made. That T410 is absolutely not worth that much, though. Find one for $80-$100 in good working shape and then we're talking.
>>
>>51380264
>>51380360
also to add, if you found an american that would be willing to eat the shipping to send you something for these low american prices, that'd probably be your best bet. I found my T420 in perfect shape with good specs and a new battery for $150.
>>
>>51380360

I just got a t450s and overall it seems very sturdy but there are a few places where things don't seem to fit together as well as it should.

In pic related:
- keyboard is raised between the space bar and the right alt. there's a small tab there that looks like should fit under the palmrest but isn't.
- trackpad is flush with the palmrest on the left side but there's a gap on the right side
- trackpoint is offcenter. evident with the backlight and i've tried with multiple nubs.
- glued on part of the screen bezel is a loose in several spots

Should I get this replaced or am I nitpicking too much?

I don't understand guys that try to do shit like this. This is guy shit. You will never see a qt3.14 hunching over on a 5 year old thinkpad doing pro work. Stop trying to make your girlfriend like some old crap that all of us only buy because they're a good deal for what we want to do. I bought a T420 for $150 because I'm a student with little cash and need something that will last and I can easily repair myself/ I like the keyboard, weight, screen res. and the battery life is fine. Your girlfriend might just not like it and she doesn't have to. Get her something that she fucking wants that you know will perform well enough for what she wants to do.

By the way, she probably does want a MBP/MBA but she's too nice to sound like a spoiled brat and ask for one. We all know how expensive they are. Who knows though, maybe she legitimately doesn't like them. I don't know faggot, why don't you talk to your own fucking girlfriend and ask?

A good number of them also just don't work or stop working after a cycle or two.

Most of the 'third party' batts being sold are old reclaimed IBM/lenovo batteries with recycled cells tacked in. Sometimes they put a new plastic shell on the outside, but the cheapest refubs jobs don't even do that. Then the slap a new label on and sell it for new.

The cells in these things are... terrifying. Mismatched. Dented. Rusty. Missing the jackets. seeping. Tabs spotwelded over tabs spotwelded over tabs. No spacers. No thermisistors....
There are good battery refurb resellers out there (like ENERGY+), but a good refurber's batteries will be (surprise!) almost as expensive as the OEMs.

>You know what? Fuck all this shit, I think I'm just gonna try to recell a battery myself. Any good guides?
It's tricky, and the lenovo batts are ultra paranoid. Like, if you remove wires in the wrong order, they will literally, intentionally, permanently blow a row of fuses to isolate all the cells (as well as marking in nonvolatile flash memory this has happened).

I can give a sequence that works on some (maybe most) of them.
>>
>>51383342
Hope you got a tab spot welder.
>>
>>51383374
...the way that works on all of them is to make sure none of the sense lines ever lose power. You'll need a bench power supply and some resistors.

...but if you slip or mess up, game over. it will blow the bolts.
>>

tab welder is the right way to do it, but you don't need one. If you've got a decent iron and decent skills, you can solder to cells safely.
