So obviously I need to flesh out the /g/ approved phones -

How should we do this?

Should we conduct polls, or should we just work on it over time through discussions?

im looking for something similar in size and specs to the old nexus 5
i was recommended the moto g 2015 by another anon and it looks good to me
is there any other phones that are good too?

What price range? Which carriers? What are you other priorities?
>>
>>51221450
Nexus 5x is the phone for you, Anon.
>>
>>51221464
I'm not sure I'd suggest it. It doesn't appear to be of the best build quality, and the the storage options are a rip off.
>>
>>51221459
i was going to get a plan with t mobile
price range is like up to 350 i guess, if the phone is really nice i guess price doesnt matter
i just need a solid phone for calling, emails, decent battery and browsing 4chowder that wont explode if i drop it
>>
>>51221485
I have a hard time recommending Moto's phones when they're having update and customer service problems.

However, that being said, the Moto X pure is 399. It might go on significant sale on Cyber Monday, like the $140 the Moto X went on sale last year and $200 the year before.

The Moto G is an insane value, true enough.
>>
>>51221473
build quality is p solid even if the backing is plastic. I like mine.

Truth is it is hard to find a smaller phone with the features like microsd, removable battery, etc. these days
>>
>>51221518
really? that is interesting. ive never bought stuff on cyber monday so thats cool. would that sale be on their site or on another store?
>>
>>51221546
The screen is not impressive, at all. The battery is also getting a lot of negative press.

At least it isn't the 6P.

i hear the nexus 5 is not really an upgrade from the old nexus spec wise, plus i hear the battery is shitty too

>>51221566
na its cool, ill look around. i know sales like that arent guaranteed to happen every year. but thanks though
>>
>>51221574
I think the Nexus 5X would be worth purchasing at 379 if the storage was 64GB min. At 16GB, it's highway robbery.

GSMArena for rec.

Budget: Moto e

Multimedia Monster: Z5/Note 4

Battery Beast: Moto X Pure
>>

I'd also add the Moto X Pure for Media Monster. Good suggestions.

I don't know much about the Z5, what's its story in your opinion?

The Pure is NOT a battery beast. Are you thinking the Droid Turbo II?

Budget Phone: Redmi 2 2GB or Redmi Note 2 - the latter has a PDAF camera.

USfags beware: LTE works in countries with global roaming LTE bands only (it covers three of the four global FDD-LTE bands!). The USA is for some fucking reason not one of these countries..
>>
>>51221902
US is so fucked up even with unlocked world phones. Verizon does not like to play ball at all with even CDMA unlocked phones most of the time.
>>
>>51221611
>X Pure; Media Monster

Yeah good pick too. From reviews the Z5 has a great cam, audio, screen, water proof... And from my experience with Sony ROMs, the Walkman app and other media apps are great.

>Turbo II

isn't that just the Pure/Style for Verizon?
>>
>>51221846
Durable steel frame, military transit drop rating

Sd card slot, compatible with card sizes not available yet.

64gig internal to handle the next five years of bloated shitware as apps grow in size

4 gigs ram ahead of the curve for average devices

Screen gimmick is actually useful

Hi fi audio

Full manual mode camera, 4k video, high low light picture quality

The only thing holding it back is the high new release price. Give it time.
>>
>>51221902
These threads should be catered to devices capable of being used worldwide, seeing as Xiaomi devices lack US LTE band support, their level of recommendation should be on the lower side of the list.
>>
>>51221923
Too bad the Z5 won't be available in the US until it is too late, considering it will probably debut at a far too high of a price.

Right now it would need to debut at $400 to be competitive.

>>51221923
Turbo II isn't that at all. It has a far better battery and is nearly indestructible. Seriously, it can survive 50 foot falls.

>>51221947
People just need to make sure to ALWAYS clarify what places these phones work. I intend to do that with the OPs with the recommended phone.
>>

Get a Nokia Lumia 1520.

It can be had new, unlocked, in black, in the USA for around $300 USD. >>http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00H2BJ7WC/ref=sr_1_1_olp?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1446868214&sr=1-1&keywords=nokia+lumia+1520&condition=new

It was a very well received windows phone and has good 'long term' reviews. >>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwlQ-04pb1w >>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6IqqhsyQug

Yes it's a windows phone but hear me out. I've actually got one and I still (as in to this day) get envious looks from people with iphones and android phones.
Firstly, the screen, it is absolutely fantastic (assuming you have the hands to use it. I'm a big guy (for you), with big hands and it works really well.
Secondly, the battery. I'm admittedly not a power user, but I can easily get 3 days out of the battery, 4 days if I'm careful. I charged it last on 11-4-15, and it's at 43% on 11-6-15.
Thirdly, the camera. 20 mega pixels (suck it apple). And the Nokia software is very intuitive and good.
Fifth, the build quality. The phone is very well put together. More importantly, it has a polycarbonate chassis that will not bend (it flexes then returns to shape and can flex over 15degrees). You can also repair this very easily with just 1 torx and then pop the battery/board/screen out of the chassis and replace whatever you want.
Lastly, the apps. People keep complaining that 'windows phone has no apps' but I don't get that sentiment, there's a lot in the ecosystem and I haven't found myself wanting for any apps (short of when google and Microsoft couldn't let it do youtube, but that's been fixed).

Recently got the htc m8 and rooted it and am running carbonrom 4.4.4. Really enjoying it except for the bluetooth.

Everytime I try to connect my headphones, it won't connect automatically, I have to go to the bluetooth settings and hit the device I'm trying to connect to. Sometimes it takes multiple times. Once it's connected, there's no more issues.

Apparently it's an issue with the m8. Is there any kind of fix at all? I really love everything else about this phone.

Never had an Android phone, I've been on an iPhone 5 for the past two years. I've been thinking about getting an Android phone before long, preferably one that comes with stock (since I can always build on it, and because I've heard bad things about some skins). I've been thinking about the Nexus 6 since it comes with stock Android, sounds very easy to root, and will receive fast updates (and for awhile, hopefully, though these are a non-issue with a rooted phone I hear). Since it's so close to Black Friday/Cyber Monday I think I'll see if the price drops some more, though the 32 gig version is only 350 on Amazon so it's fine if it doesn't.

My only concerns is the lack of removable battery and storage. Sure, I've suffered from that with my iPhone already, but I was looking forward to being able to replace one or both of those since Android users always touted the ability a few years ago.

If I were to be deciding between the V10 and the S6, which one would I pick and why?
I'm having difficulty identifying which features and specs are most important for performance.
Both using the same glass, same resolution
Concerned about the S6's durability,
No fucking clue which cpu or gpu is better.
Battery life in practice? I know the v10 has a higher capacity but in practice what does that mean?
No idea about the LG's build quality, currently using a S3 which I have been for years, not broken yet.

So many things to consider, different review sites seem to have different positions, are they pretty balanced?
>>
>>51227903
It won't be dead but significantly less time before needing a charge
>>
>>51228034
V10 build quality is top notch steel frame. Screen is only slightly lower quality than s6. For me the expandable memory was the selling point. I bought one and am very happy with it.

That's every fucking phone, but indeed, the Pure doesn't have stellar battery life out of the package. Usable? Sure. Probably average for phablets.

Yeah I need to just put my money where my mouth is and only buy phones with SD cards and removable batteries. I really should get a V10. I'm sure Costco will have them on sale about the time I'm looking to get a new phone 9 spring/summer) for some crazy price.

That Costco membership would really pay off then.

How's the interface on the V10?

Moving and want a new phone before I go.

I'm currently on Verizon, but I'm thinking of getting the Nexus 6P. I know it can work on Verizon, but do I bring them the phone and they switch it over with the sim card or some shit?

Just looking for a decent upgrade since I'm a generation or two behind.
>>
>>51228326
I came from an s4 using nova launcher, so far I've only used the stock launcher and am mostly happy with it. I miss the app drawer options.

It had alot of things the s4 didn't, looping pages, custom icons, custom home button placement etc. You get a choice in settings style menu which is cool I prefer tabs.

The second screen is useful for quick contacts and most used apps. Plus being able to use the flashlight without turning the screen on by swiping the second screen to a small menu.

I'm sure some people might hate it, depends on what you're used to. I personally am glad I waited for this phone.
>>
>>51228362
You'd want to get a new sim for sure. People are reporting issues with transferring over an old sim.
>>
>>51228391
Neat, I'm on a S4 with Nova Launcher. I had CM 10.2 and 11 for years, but then it fucked up and nothing I could do would make CM work again. So, I went back to TW and have customized the shit out of it.
>>
>>51228394

It is though, at least for me. I keep my important contacts that I use several times a work day there, along with my main apps. Also easy switching between apps/pages. Controlling media with the screen off is useful to.

Of course this can easily be done with shortcuts, but it's there no matter what app I'm using.

What phone should I get after Lumia 620?
This was the last good compact Windows Phone. It had everything = IPS, quality camera with flash, front camera, free navi, Office etc.

Now every 4" phone is a budget-tier shit with TFT and abysmal camera unusable in any low light scenario. The bigger ones are good but man I dont like bigger phones. Fuck this "moar screen" fad.

Having a real hard time deciding between LG G4, Nexus 6P and Note 4.

The G4 has a god tier camera, LCD display, removable battery and is easy to teardown/repair, but has 0 developer support on XDA despite being out for 6 months.

6P doesn't have a removable battery, has an OLED display (don't like them since they degrade over time) and is hard to teardown... But it's a Nexus device. So it has that good software support and ROM/kernel selection.

The Note 4 is a bit of a wildcard choice, it will be dropped at 6.0 but has a removable battery and a good ROM/kernel selection... But again a damn OLED display.

If the G4 had developer support it'd be an easy easy choice, especially if CloudyG4 was available, but as it stands now the XDA subforum for G4 is a ghost town.
>>
>>51233712
That's really bizarre, are they that way with all the LG devices?
>>
>>51233755
No, the G3 has a fantastic ROM/kernel selection at this point. I heard it took a little while to get there, but we're 6 months into the G4's life and there's barely a peep. There's only a couple of stock-based ROMs on XDA, but they look shitty as fuck and cobbled together by some Indian quasi-"developer"s. Cyanogenmod finally showed up a week ago but it's unstable as fuck at this point and I don't like AOSP ROMs anyway since they destroy camera and often battery life.

that's just a defect, most 6P's have a wicked display, it's a Note 4 panel, possibly even Note 5.

sure, it could be decent, but that does not mean you can get something much better for cheaper. see >>51235159

>These threads should be catered to devices capable of being used worldwide,
No, it has the global LTE bands.

To quote the WP article ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_LTE_networks ) on LTE networks:
> Networks on the global LTE-bands 1, 3, 7, 28 (FDD-LTE) or 38, 40 (TDD-LTE) are suitable for future global roaming in ITU Regions 1, 2 and 3.
It supports FDD-LTE 1,3,7. They also have 38,40 on the TDD-LTE model.

It's the USA that sucks balls with its phone networks. No problems in Europe or most other places.

>>
>>51235984
Where do you live?

Here (europe) the Z3 compact costs €50 more than the One Plus X.
>>
>>51236074

the one biggest downside would probably be MIUI. Xiaomi has a habit of updating the MIUI version but not the underlying android version, leading to for example the Mi4 still technically being stuck on kitkat.

the hardware however is top notch, so if you can get a stock rom on it you're good.
>>
>>51236125

Canada. the Z3c is $500 from expansys, the OPX is $389. both excluding shipping
>>
>>51236121
Droid Turbo II.
>>
>>51236148
So I guess the price gap between the 6p and other phones is just as huge there as it is here?
>>
>>51236061

best phone just spec wise is probably the pure, best long-term longevity is probably the nexus (because you know, it's a nexus), best value is definitely the opx ($250 for the build and the 1080p amoled and all the other stuff it gets you is just nuts).

i'd say if you have the money go for the n5x otherwise opx
>>
>>51236128
Uh, they updated the underlying android version too - many times, actually.

But neither do these updates come in lockstep between devices nor with Google's upstream work, and not even MIUI always got updated at the same time for all devices and all variants of them.

They've still done a lot of work on updating almost every device, anyways.
>>
>>51236177

eh, not really, you buy it directly from google so it's $699. the reason sites like expansys can price gouge you is that sony phones are a bell exclusive, so you are importing from other countries to get unlocked
>>
>>51236181
The OPX doesn't work with half the US carriers and right now doesnt even work with all the bands on ATT and TMobile.

Lg v10
>>
>>51236224
I'll admit, that's probably the closest.
>>
>>51236204

the mi4 is still on kitkat. the fact that the miui version is decoupled from the android version is where the problem lies. they have updated the underlying android version sure, but they don't have to. that's the problem.

Stay away from LG. LG loves to cut off software support. My G2 didn't even get lollipop and came out roughly the same time as the Nexus 5
>>
>>51236250
Yea, but then every phone that shipped originally with MIUIv4 got 1-3 Android updates, I think.

And I'm pretty sure quite a few that shipped with 4.4.x like the Redmi 2 got a Lollipop update.

So there is no general rule there - sucks that you didn't get your Lollipop or whatever you'd have liked yet, but maybe it will still happen.

That it didn't happen to your phone first is not particularly surprising.

> but they don't have to. that's the problem.

>>
>>51236448
I think it would, as they wouldn't be able to claim that the phone was "updated to MIUI 7" and have it still be on KitKat. If they were coupled then for them to be able to say "updated to MIUI 7" would actually have to mean that the underlying Android would have to be updated to Lollipop. With them being decoupled they can just be lazy and not update the underlying version.
