MIUI hasn't been good since Gingerbread. Back then it actually had a lot of good features that other roms didn't have, while also being pretty fast. Especially the themes were nice.
Now it's just... I don't see why anyone would use it. It's slower than CM/AOSP, and there are no worthwhile features. I'd actually rather use the stock LG G2 rom + Xposed.

There are certain apps I never open directly, like messenger and YouTube, so those obviously don't need to be on my homescreen. I have 5 on my screen and those are the ones I use everyday. They are also "covers" from action launcher though, basically both app links and folders by swiping up on the app. In the folders I put the apps I only use every couple of days. How many of those apps do you really click everyday? Also app links can be hidden with gestures, and widgets. For instance I don't need a weather app because I just have the weather icon on my screen link to it. It is a balance though, too many and it is hard to find things, too minimal and it becomes cumbersome

I think in some cases they just edit the background, so the dim box is actually the image with the icons sitting on top. Can't speak for this image specifically but seen guys do that before.

Everything except the icons is a static widget built in Zooper Pro, which is covering the entire home screen of Nova Prime. Nova has a setting that allows elements to overlap, so it was just a matter of centering the widget to the icons.
The icons are (almost) all folders assigned individual icons (muh minimalism), another Nova feature. Then, using Zooper, the clock is a shortcut for Google Now, the weather icons and info all open Weather Underground, and the battery icon opens Zooper so I can fuck with the widget when I feel like it.

I got an HTC one m9 (mThrottle) after seeing how android finally started to look nicer than ios, I don't think I can ever return, I have now seen how beautiful Android can be made to look. IOS looks nice, no denying that. But Android can look 100× better without much effort.

I'm still not a huge fan of the background. I prefer simpler ones which provide better contrast for the icons and widgets.
