Not solo in the sense of being alone but solo in the sense of being the sole focus of the story. Spider-man has a supporting cast but he's a "solo" hero. Same with Wolverine's solo books. It's not fair to a character like Cypher or Cannonball to get dragged through demons and shit all the time.
>>
>>83841853
that was kind of the point, Claremont couldn't leave well enough alone with the characters and kept embroidering things onto them that weren't characterization or personality traits

Right? The X-Men are more than just the whole " hated and feared" angle.

They go to space and fight aliens, the battle a dinosaur man in jorts in a jungle hidden below the South Pole, they get transported to a Robert E Howard Sword and sorcery storyline at one point.

It can't be Sentinels and the Brotherhood all the time

Here's my Bill Sienkiewicz story: I was working at a convention two years ago where he was a featured guest. He actually had a scheduled panel all his own on the last day of the convention. Anyway, the appointed time arrives—and no Sienkiewicz. Half an hour passes and still no Bill. By this point, the venue is already full of fans (I'd worked the convention before, and it was one of the better attended solo panels). After about 40 minutes, the lead event organizer heads up to the stage and apologizes to the audience and says that Bill won't be making the panel after all due to feeling unwell because of the change in time zones or some such nonsense.

The audience grumbles—one woman complains that she drove a whole day just to meet him—but they leave, 'cause what can they do? I linger a bit and I overhear the organizer is fuming. Like a lot of the bigger cons, they paid for Bill's flight and hotel, paid him an appearance fee, and set him up with a table to sell sketches. Apparently, the real reason he wasn't able to make the panel was because he had partied too hard the night before during the Saturday after-party. The organizer says they'll never have him as a guest again (the company handles some of the biggest conventions in North America).

It was a real shame, cause he was a real good dude the times I passed by his table, happy to talk to fans even if they weren't buying anything from his table.

I always had the feeling some of these unknown girls were modeled after real people. This one in particular: Manoli, red and blond hair. Years later, as the X-Men faced The Adversary, the reporter is a young adult named Manoli, with red and blond hair.

Out of curiosity, i googled "manoli x-men new mutants". I found out the character's full name is Manoli Wetherell. I google Manoli Wetherell, I find an IRL redhead woman. Coincidence?

>I always had the feeling some of these unknown girls were modeled after real people.

It's relatively clear that Sienkiewicz was using photo references a lot early on, and he weaned himself off the habit as he grew more comfortable with his art.

As for names, Claremont is friends with a few NPR people which is why Neal Conan gets namedropped on a few occasions. Manoli (the real one) was/is an engineer there.

It's a recurring thing in Claremont to have literal inserts of himself and his co-workers/friends:

One of the main thins in new Mutants was Claremont's idea that not all of these kids were cut out to be superheroes, some would stay and some would move on with their lives and find jobs or some other use for their power. In Asgard, the ultimate warrior culture, Cypher pretty much gets branded as not up to the task while Sunspot decides it's the ultimate life for him

>One of the main thins in new Mutants was Claremont's idea that not all of these kids were cut out to be superheroes

I think I would have appreciated that point better if Prof. Xavier had looked at Doug and said "What the fuck is he doing on this team" at least once.

You could make a case for keeping him away from the Massachusetts Academy (private schools don't name themselves after the states they're located in btw), but even then that's pretty weak. We never get scenes of Kitty forcing Doug to go through the Danger Room and training him in basic self-defense, and that always felt pretty implausible for Xavier's school.

And then, quelle surprise, Doug goes out like a bitch in combat, leaving Xavier to have to do that thing he hates doing, brainwashing grieving parents.

It didn't help that he had a really bland personality and a power set that in a world of flying, reality warping, magic-using, building lifting, punch-from-the-punch-dimension punching people, stood out as the least possible of the bunch (infer a complete language from a sentence).

He was cute but that wasn't enough to sustain a character. Also, having him be a computer genius kind of stepped on that being one of Kitty's strengths.
