That's too anticlimatic and weak for the story. Messer's death allows for the rest of the cast to grow. Somebody in the main cast was destined to die. Mirage and Hayate are too central. Nobody gives a fuck about Chuck and that leaves Messer or Arad. Arad isn't really that significant so far and his death wouldn't add/detract much.
Messer, however, was the squad ace. Him being around means that everyone else can go on cruise control and never progress. Killing the primary antagonist would also remove a lot of their threat. Killing Messer was the only real choice.

Most of Delta has come across as just a squabble between 10 people. It lacks the opera of previous series and Windemere doesn't really come across as a genuine threat, yet. I'd like to see more NUNS mooks getting blown out, personally.
