They laid the death flags thick in the last few episodes. I was expecting this mini-arc to happen a bit later in the series. People have been saying Messer is down for death since the beginning and nobody should really be shocked by anything other than it being sooner rather than later.

It's been used in Gerwalk. Stands to reason that it should still be present in fighter mode, but it doesn't make for enjoyable dogfighting if fighters can actually tank shots. It'd ruin the whole thing, really. If a Messiah can project such a large barrier, I don't see why a Siegfried shouldn't be able to either. It's not like they need to hold their arms up.
Suspension of disbelief and all that with it being a story at the end of the day. I'm nitpicking. Like I said, even if Messer still had his barrier, he was penned to die this episode and nothing would have changed that in the slightest.

That's too anticlimatic and weak for the story. Messer's death allows for the rest of the cast to grow. Somebody in the main cast was destined to die. Mirage and Hayate are too central. Nobody gives a fuck about Chuck and that leaves Messer or Arad. Arad isn't really that significant so far and his death wouldn't add/detract much.
Messer, however, was the squad ace. Him being around means that everyone else can go on cruise control and never progress. Killing the primary antagonist would also remove a lot of their threat. Killing Messer was the only real choice.

To be honest, Sheryl could have been the blandest and most boring character around and she still would be better than whatever they were trying to do with Ranka.
Ranka was a little girl (as in a little kid with the body of a pre-teen) with dumb kids dreams and a cringeworthy personality. She was as unlikeable as they come. Not to mention she never once truly saw Alto as he realy was and only as the perfect image she had of him (some anon wrote some shit about that yesterday that was basicly spot on)
On the other hand there was Sheryl, the teen that's actually a go-getter, a tsundere with a really great dere side that actually cared about the MC as he is and that supports him properly. not to mention beautifull and actually likeable.

You seemed to be harboring negative feelings towards Ranka so I thought I would help you understand her character more. When you write a character you don't say, "What can I do to make this character as likable as possible", you say "How would this person who has experienced x react to y?". Both Ranka and Sheryl hold true to this so they are both good characters regardless of their likability. Most people (myself included) liked Sheryl because she had more likable characteristics, but to say Ranka is a bad character or question what the writers were trying to accomplish with her is silly. That's not to say you have to like her, but if you're coming to the temple of Kawamori make sure to bring your UNDERSTANDING with you.
