Why is it that all of the "Alien abduction" stories almost always include greys, reptilians, Nordics, or some other variety of the three, all of which are humanoid. The only reason why humans automatically assume that aliens are humanoid is because people back in the day used to think that, if aliens were to exist, they would have to be humanoid. They believed that a being would have to be a humanoid to be sapient or intelligent. The depiction of the "Grey Alien" was based off the beings in "Man of the year million", which was a speculative evolution book theorising what humans would look like in the far future. In science fiction, the reason why aliens are humanoid is because it's easy to dress a person in a suit and cheaper than having to use CGI, and the fact that the aliens are more relatable due to their humanoid form I.E. Avatar, Doctor Who, Star Trek, etc.

What is the likelihood of aliens being humanoid in real life? If aliens weren't humanoid, what do you think they'd be like? Discuss.

I would imagine that a species that was of sufficient intelligence to devise an efficient means of travelling interstellar distances, would also have developed beyond the need for a physical body.

Maybe those are the real ones.

It's the only logical conclusion based upon observable evidence.

Earth is the only source of life we know of.
Earth is the only source of intelligent life we know of, us.

Only Earth has the attributes required to support life.

Therefore, only Earthlike planets can support life.

If the only way for life to exist, let alone intelligent life, is by existing on a planet with the same attributes as ours, it's only logical to assume that the same attributes that made us and life here the way it is, would also make life there similar to here. They are the same attributes, the same requirements. The same type of life would exist.

Further, we are the only form intelligent life had existed in. There is no other form, or we would see it and know it. We are it, therefore it's fair to assume, based on the same attributes that made us us, they would be like us as well.

well, shapeshifters might just take on humanoid forms to associate with us.
but i mean, being tall and having arms that can use tools makes it more likely to become the dominant species of any planet pretty much, so that could be it also.

So you're just going to completely ignore the level of awareness observed in corvids, primates, and sea mammals?

What people are seeing is something else.

You could expect that they would have heads. Other than that, there are infinite possibilities for body symmetry, locomotion and sensory organs.

Even a highly advanced technological civilization would leave very few traces after a couple million years.

humanoid aliens are a by product of the limitations of special effects over generations

war of the worlds describes non humanoid aliens. mostly a head and tentacles. the movie they made not so long ago didnt do the concept justice

It is most likely, considering the increasing plausibility of a computational theory of mind, that there exists post-biological superintelligence within the universe somewhere, or at least somewhen. In fact, there is no reason to doubt, with tranhumanistic debates becoming ever more relevant, that biological forms of life are a transitory phenomenon in the universe.

>the movie they made not so long ago didnt do the concept justice

Agreed.

On that note, it is entirely possible that an intelligent species could evolve from a decentralized nervous system, as observed in the octopus.

Asimov touched on this idea in 1955 with, "The End of Eternity."

His approach employed anthropomorphization and subsequent fraternal organization of the agency involved in the governance of time, but the idea of trans-dimensional super-intelligence, in and of itself, is not particularly new.

"The Last Question," first published in 1956, more specifically examined the creation of a trans-dimensional, omnipresent and ultimately, omnipotent super-intelligence of machine origin.

Obviously, extremophiles don't exist. I mean, sure, they live on this planet - but due to their nature, they don't necessarily HAVE to live on this planet. Think of anaerobic organisms. They would be able to survive in much tougher environments than 90% of the earth's population. Some things that live on this planet do not necessarily have to give a fuck about anything other than it's extremely specific niche that can be fulfilled on any planet, even if it's like earth in no other way than having the specific properties to support that organism's life. And, there's no reason why this organism wouldn't eventually evolve into something much more intelligent over time.

This. Life doesn't have to be Carbon based, if a lifeform were to be something like Silicone based, it would be more like a rock golem or a cloud of gas.

Convergent Evolution

It's not unreasonable that some (SOME NOT ALL) intelligent space faring life would evolve a similar form to us.

There is also the idea of directed panspermia, in which an intelligent race purposely seeds a planet with their genetic information. If a single original humanoid race seeded many planets then various humanoid lifeforms would emerge. (Litterally the plot of a star trek episode btw)
>>
>>17923523
The humanoid form is the most efficient form to manipulate it's surroundings in an advanced manner. For example, it would be really hard for something with hoofs to build or use tools that would allow for advancement of its species and environment.

It's a logical assessment based on observation of our own evolution and environment. Not because it was depicted in media etc.
