So, let me begin by saying I never post or even go to /x/, I've only been here like 3 times in my 4 years of 4chan. Today, I saw something that I was confused about. I live in upper Florida, so my backyard is lined with a forest. I was mowing my lawn, and when I turned to finish off the row that I was mowing, I saw it. It was white, and had a gold cap. I didn't see a face, not even eyes, but that's because it was less than 3 centimeters in length, maybe .3 in width. It had longer wings than I drew in the sketch, but it flew in circles, and it fluttered like a humming bird. It also had what seemed to be like legs, but they were seemed together, like if someone had stitches I watched it for around 1 minute, as it just flew around a tree that was nearby. But near the end, it flew near me and "starred" in my general direction, and it just floated. after around 4 seconds, in a blink of an eye, it flew down towards the grass, beyond my sight. I still don't believe it was a fairy, and i'm pretty sure it was just an insect.

What are you suggesting. Pollen?
>>
>>17916501
No, I'm saying this is a good sign.
>>
>>17916512
Oh shit, how so?
>>
>>17916518
>gold cap

That's not a cap, it's a crown.
>>
>>17916520
Yeah. maybe it was now that i think of it. To me though, it seemed to be almost an elve like "cap."
>>
>>17916527
Well, when you're very small and do a lot of flying, even crowns have to be aerodynamic.
>>
>>17916529
Yeah I guess. Is there like a type of fairy it could be? Or is there no "identification" system?
>>
>>17916535
I haven't the faintest clue.
The wee folk are a complete mystery to me, as far as their customs and societal structure.
I just see them around here and there.
They seem to want to be left alone, so I leave them alone.
>>
>>17916537
Ahhh I see. So they're rare then? (sorry for the questions lmao)
>>
>>17916539
It's all good, if I had something more important to do I'd go do it.

Not rare exactly, but very secretive and good at not being noticed.

Oh, new fairy thread, okay.

Why do people always think fairies are bug people?
>>
>>17916584
They're tiny, kind of look like bugs from a distance, and most people don't have very good eyesight?
>>
>>17916584
I think the image of faries being bug-like people comes from Germanic folklore. But the scary, full-sized, no-wing faries are more Irish. A lot more interesting imo.
>>
>>17916598
We should really reclassify them, since fairy has become a catch-all term.
I dunno, like elves, gnomes, sidhe, domovoi, etc.
>>
>>17916738
Yeah very true, not sure why "fairy" became the most popular/umbrella term. It makes me think of happy little children's books.
>>
>>17916549
THAT was an interesting read.
>>
>>17917080
>makes me think of happy little children's books
That could explain it.

It just happens to be the most popular word.
Since people have a standard view of fairies that completely ignore the dangerous aspects related to them, mentioned in folklore, some persons, myself included, prefer to use some of the older words, to emphasize these aspects.
Personally, I prefer fay, because it doesn't look like a misspelling (faery) and it looks more natural when in plural than "faes".
That said, when I'm wearing my thesaurus hat I use fairy to avoid repeating "fay" again.

I've never heard anything other than English fairies being treated as small, folklorically speaking.

And I don't trust English fairies as real. Sanitized bullshit.
>>
>>17917740
Ummm, domovoi are small
>>
>>17918193
So is the tomte but that doesn't mean fairies are small, any more than humans are small because of midgets.
>>
>>17917702
The plural of Fae is Fae.

"Fay" sounds even more queer than "fairy."
>>
>>17918514
You are confusing fairies (Tinkerbell) with elves and the sidhe
>>
>>17917740
Yea, we totally need new terms.
The current ones are way too ambiguous.

Maybe you're all just unstudied swine.

Okay, so tell me, what's the difference between a svartalf, a gnome, and a dwarf?

Oh. The more you know.
>>17918548
It doesn't sound like that for me, but English is not my first language. Note taken.
>>
>>17918884
I mean the same words are used for different things is different regions, and that causes a lot of confusion since we're not all from the same place.
>>
>>17919035
Maybe we should learn more about the places we speak from.
>>
>>17918911
There is no difference, in essence. They are all short, stocky beings with an affinity for Earth, and by extension minerals and precious stones. All are master jewlers, crafters, tinkers who take great pride in their work. Yet we have three, possibly more, names for them.

I find fairies to be among the most interesting creatures to study, in terms of folklore.
They all seem to come from the same branch of nature spirits humans have worshipped in all cultures for millenia.
Here in Northern England, its still a custom to but nuts and berries out on your windowsill at the solstices to keep the Brownies happy.
