what makes it eerie for me is that those fallen down trees are from the initial blast wave. the place is so radiated even germs are gone, so nothing decomposes.

weirdly enough, yes.
it's mostly just the germs that aren't around. most of the woods would be considered pretty healthy given the place, and there are even large amounts of animals around. problem is that leaves and shit falling on the ground has made the ground stack up to half a metre of super dry, radiation laden bed. lot of scientists are even pretty scared, since a lot of things may set it burning, causing a radiation cloud comparable to the one of the initial blast.
