The best way to do it, OP, is to make friends in the black community. Get to know some black folks, get to know their families. Going to a black church is a good idea. Talk to the older people. I mean think about it, a black woman who is 70 today can tell you stories about her grandma who was born a slave to African parents. African parents that were grabbed straight out the jungle.
It really is pretty much impossible to get a practical, working understanding of ancient african/folk magics without actually knowing and interacting with black people regularly. It is obviously something that is not for racists.
