Oh man, I can't pick just one. If I had to pick a top two probably Dead Alive (aka Braindead) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. From Beyond is a pretty close third.

In the mouth of madness

>>17856326
fuck off Gen Z
>>
Hard question.

>Blair Witch Project
>Uzumaki
>Texas Chainsaw Massacre
>"Cannibal Holocaust"

These are pretty high on my list - yes, they're campy, but they portray a random human's reactions to fucked up shit in a variety of quasi-believable ways, in their variety.
>>
Silent Hill, unpopular opinion but I do love alternate reality horrors
>>
The Matrix

Whereas it isn't really a Horror Movie per se, it, at least to me, has that psychological terror aspect that is a trait of a good horror movie.
>>
Dark Skies is my favorite. The Mirror is a good movie, until the ending where it shits the bed.
>>
>>17857064
>they portray a random human's reactions to fucked up shit
Literally, and I mean literally every horror movie does it.
>>
>>17857083
That was the description of the genre. The >>17857064
>in a variety of quasi-believable ways
Was the emphatic bit.
>>
>>17857083
Most often than not they do so in an unbelievable way (or, in a way no "real human" would - think about the difference between The Haunting (1963) and Ju-On, or how the characters react to the menace of the supernatural); what sets apart these movies is how the reaction is an expression of humanity, not just a human expressing stuff - don't know if I mad myself clear.

Rosemary's Baby, though it's not exactly a classical horror movie, is really spooky and fun.
I also know The Exorcist is a cliché answer, but it's really stood the test of time for me, and it's one of the horror movies I always go back to.
I also really love Alien.
I'm a bit of a sucker for the classics.
As far as newer movies go, I love The Witch, and I also really liked The Conjuring (I haven't seen the sequel yet, or the spinoff).
>>

Well not really stopped, per se, it just became another genre and it wasn't filmed as well as the first two thirds of the movie were. It looked like a Resident Evil spin off directed by Uwe Boll, if you'll forgive my Klatchian.
>>
An American Werewolf in London has to be my all time favorite. Its easily the best werewolf movie ever and its hilarious at times to boot.

I'll never watch The Visit again because I almost had a fucking anxiety attack, I don't expect anyone else to think much of it I am just literally afraid of demented old people. So that grandma shit near traumatized me.

The Witch is that kind of movie where the parts (cinematography, acting, lightening) are masterfully done but the end product still feels like utter shit. In part, maybe that has to do with the fact that people were expecting a scary horror after seeing the trailer, but all they got was a faggot ass drama,

Of course it should be lauded for the above mentioned elements but that is only good if you're a reviewer on rotten tomatoes or a hipster trying to sound knowledgeable on a rave party.

OP here.
I think I'm going to binge watch some of the titles here, because I think I suppress the memories of watching As Above, So Below. Not scary. Just blurry and mindfucky towards the end, but not even in a clever way

More so in the way that questions what just happened.

I remember watching the Babadook, and I kept telling myself, "What the fuck am I watching" , "Is this shit for real" ; "Tell me ppl don't really like this fucking bullshit"... Personally, the Babadook was one of the worst "horror" movie I'd ever watch.

My Fav, and I know lots of ppl will disagree, is The Conjuring. This movie was based on a true story (most of it) and it was so well done, I loved it actually. Can't wait to see the 2nd one they came out with.

What's with that trend in horror movies nowadays to make the audience suffer through half an hour of personal problems of annoying people? Some kind of SJWism to make people hate the cast enough so to not feel bad when they're all killed off?

God, watching the first 30 mins of this movie certainly makes me want to kill them myself.

Pick any of the following:

WΔZ (this films topic is actually real)

The Haunter (2013, really liked the atmosphere)
High Tension
Silent Hill (also amazing atmosphere)
The Devils Rejects

>>17857069

>>
The Shining and The Poughkeepsie Tapes.

>>
>>17857069
Silent Hill is probably the absolute best video game movie.

It does fuck up the game's plot, but at least it was genuinely a scary movie and used the visuals properly. Infinitely better than Resident Evil.
>>
I realize my favorite horror movies, aren't really the ones that scare me the most, and a lot of times are pretty loosely 'horror movies' in comparison to other genre examples.

Suspiria and Videodrome are my two favorites, both mostly from the visual aspect.

And the Amityville Horror is probably the actual best haunted house movie that exists, regardless of how unreliable the source is.

Street Trash is my favorite "bad" horror movie.
>>
>>17859227
The common thread between those movies to me is the special effects, so I would say John Carpenter's The Thing, but you've likely seen it.

>>17857078
Nigga what?

When I was like 5 I decided to sneak into my sister's room and watch Halloween H20. I had crazy nightmares for a month but horror movies haven't phased me since then.

Martyrs (2008) is pretty disturbing/spooky. There's some really gory shit but it isn't goreporn like the Saw franchise. If you speak French or can live with subtitles then watch it.

[Rec] 1 and 2 are solid found footage zombie shit and in Spanish if I remember correctly.

The Descent was eerie for me. A bunch of women go cave diving and find spooks. There's basically no men in the film and watching a bunch of women fend for themselves adds a layer of intensity.

The VHS franchise is bad but has moments where you see some crazy shit.

The first few of the OG Nightmare on Elm Street movies have some brutal deaths and it's a good concept. Please don't watch the remake.

Maniac is a POV of Elijah Wood as a psychotic killer. It is a very cool concept and has it's creepy moments.

I enjoyed Cabin in the Woods because it was a big cliche fuck you to the entire horror scene and then just goes full blown WTF.

The newer Hills Have Eyes is about hillbilly mutants and I liked them. I never saw the old one.

If you want to see very elaborate and brutal torture then Saw and Hostel movies are for you.

Every single PG-13 horror film is absolute shit. No exceptions.

Nice horror anthology that has a bit of everything.

It's weird to see other old horror movies and how terribly they've aged in certain aspects (House on Haunted Hill's skeletals comes to mind), in comparison to how well this one aged.

The story about the mirror remains one of the most legitimately creepy things I've seen in a movie. Despite it being so simple, it's really effective.

I hate to say it, but Blair Witch Project was nothing but a huge let down for me. I had heard all this hype about it, yet I hadn't checked it out until a couple of years ago when I sat down all hyped up just to almost sleep through the whole movie.
I mean, it was a good idea and it was nice with all the unknown actors/actresses, but it wasn't even a tad creepy. Some people told me that they were even scared about walking in the woods after watching it... But seriously, i can'y see how anyone who can convince me that it deserved all this chatter

If anyone else enjoys movies where stupid but lovable characters get offed I'd recommend

Hills have eyes
Texas chainsaw massacre (2003)/the beginning
>>
>>17858835
>>17859380
Is the remake of I spit on your grave as stupid and unintentionally funny as the original?
>>
>>17859132
the conjuring 2 is shit, I really don't know why everyone loves it so much. Only one scene stood out as being very good and scary, the rest of the movie was just eye-roll inducing as they dump out a grab bag of every haunted house cliche imaginable. I say this as someone who quite liked the first one too.
>that shoehorned in creepypasta-tier monster
bad
>>
>>17862950
I like this; Angel Heart has a nice, slow, creep vibe. Micky Rourke was good, back when he had his old face. Super creepy voodoo shit in flashbacks and stuff lurking around corners.
Also, despite the dated special effects, Silver Bullet was pretty damn good. It's always scary when the story is told from the point of a child. Reminded me of To Kill A Mockingbird...and it's Gary Busey everybody's crazy uncle?
The Howling had a nice plot as well; on par with American Werewolf In London...
>>
>>17862146
Troll Hunter, on paper, seems like a dumb, unworkable, idea; but what they did with it was fantastic. Very original.

Bold statement to make when you admit to enjoying some small piece of it, I bet you enjoyed the witch?

If you like conjuring, you'll like the second one. Don't listen to wew lad over here

>well acted
>decent story
>no cheap thrills

If you're a fan of horror movies that can actually make you upset for its characters, watch that shit
>>
>>17863143
Compare Conjuring 2 to for example The Forest....You have to appreciate good horror when you see it.

I live in a somewhat rural area of Britain so I'm sorrounded by woods. I still haven't seen the movie because I'm a pussy as being within these woods' at night is unnerving enough.

I have patrician taste in horror movies. Ask me anything.
>>
>>17861599
The Witch isn't for everyone. If you were raised religious or near the woods or something it will probably fuck you up. If you have a thing for folk horror or atmospheric horror It's great. If you have a thing for historical accuracy its great. If you come expecting traditional horror you'll probably be disappointed. Love it or hate it though its really well made and worth a watch at least in my opinion.
>>
>>17857069
The first silent hill movie isn't bad if you haven't played the games. Second one is shit though.

Yeah actually, if you have any knowledge of cinematography, acting, storytelling, or horror beyond cheap amusement park haunted houses you'll probably find that the VVitch is much better than The Conjuring 2.

Yeah, I admitted that one scene was good because that is my honest opinion. The painting scene was the only unnerving one in the movie for me.

Honestly, I didn't. I said my movies very early on and left as soon as I could. It's literally teenagers listing their favorite movies that are so totally cool and brutal, man. One guy said evil dead 2, but then listed Audition highly, it's like they've only ever watched meme movies.
>>
>>17864097
I don't think it is fair to treat Evil Dead like that, it knows exactly what it is and isn't trying to be serious. Tons of people ITT are listing awful stupid flicks as great and shit talking great movies with "ugh its so booring there isnt even like any blood and violence"

>Silent Hill
>House of the Dead
>Alone in the Dark
>Sinister
>I Spit on Your Grave
fucking seriously?
>>
>>17864153
>I Spit On Your Grave
Godamn that triggered me. I miss when movies had class and tact instead of clear, focused rape scenes for 5 minutes straight. Look I get it, it's edgy and people like that, but who watches that for fun? Why does someone think that's the best movie ever? Irreversible is pretentious bullshit, it's neat to watch once, but if you watch that every day for fun, you should probably seek professional help.
>>
>>17859033
The book is definitely horror, whereas the movies concentrated more on the relationship aspect between Oskar and Eli

The Shining

>>

I am bad at these summaries, but few plot devices get this movie going.

Aliens are spraying the earth with toxic gas. A huge percentage of the world population is dead. One of the guys in the bunker is a perverted rapist but he tries to hide it. The girls is fidgety all the time about getting out of the bunker until she finds out that shit really went down. By the end she has to get out of that bunker, no matter the cost.

Cabin in the Woods, not necessarily for the actual scare factor but for the incredible special effects and enjoyable plot. Babadook is a close second.

Not a fair assumption, going into it expecting it to be "fake" (literally no film ever made was marketed as real unless it's a documentary by Michael Moore) STILL have me chills because it plays on your sense of sight and hearing so much that the lack thereof including the proposed idea of a haunted forest is enough to draw the scariest shit in your mind

>>>>SPOILER
>three friends in supposedly haunted woods
>they're lost and spending another night in tents
>rustling nearby and then the sound of a baby crying

If that doesn't unnerve you good job lad
>>
in the mouth of madness is cool.. uhh videodrome is awesome although i donno if cronenbergs movies could be considered horror exactly.
>>
>>17862964
Found footage was a new genre when it came out and people actually believed this happened
>>
The Descent was pretty cool, but I'd like it more if it was about them being trapped in the caves and the claustrophobia of it instead of going into a monster movie
