You can only live by your own path.
No matter how much insight they have, you can never really get to the truth if you don't do it by yourself.
Read a ton of different perspectives, not just ones you already agree with. Then, compare it all to experiences in your life and the world. This is how you learn what you need to know.
No one can really teach you without limiting you.

Yes, but sanga - association of those on the same path - is vital. Guru, sadhu, sastra - spiritual teacher, the community of practitioners, and the sacred texts - are the checks and balances of spiritual life. It is difficult, and hazardous, to attempt to only associate through vani (teachings) and the Supersoul.
finding a guru is like finding a thread, or chain, which is connected to everything
when we follow this thread, we end up at the truth.
Sometimes, when we follow this thread, we can see many other links, above and below, but not all are accessible.
Choose a Guru who makes truth most accessible to you and doesn't deny the rest of the chain:
No true guru says "no one but me is Guru" because the truth is all beings are capable of being Guru and innately have Guru-like-qualities, even non-sentient beings can teach us (lower on the chain = less useful)
and the best Guru teaches to make everything as Guru because everything is part of guru (higher on the chain = better accessibility)
